I think some of you are confusing a gaming system and a High Def Movie player. The Xbox 360 was meant as a gaming system. It has far surpassed PS3 in gaming aspects. All Sony did was put out a subpar gaming system with Blue Ray in it. But Sony had to have something so they hedged there bets on Blue Ray. They knew it would win them the blu ray showdown and hopefully gain the some gamers. Well they got the Blu ray business with spending a little money but they still are leaps and bounds behind the WII and Xbox 360 as far as gaming goes. Microsoft never intended the 360 to be a movie player. Just like they didn't the original Xbox. Yes the add on is available (which I did buy) but the games and Xbox live are what sell the Xbox. Also when Toshiba does throw in the towel, Microsoft will have a Blu Ray attachment as well. I think people here forget that Microsoft and Sony are publicly traded companies that have people to answer to when profits aren't right. They aren't your mom and dad looking out for your best interest. Try to remember Xbox / Microsoft = gaming and software, PS3 / Sony = Blu ray and an assortment of other hardware. I love how people get so bent out of shape about all this in these forums. It's what a few hundred dollars? Suck it up and move on. This goes for both the Blu Ray and HD DVD whiners!
Tim - As much as I love to hate you.
Can't you help me make these people quit whining about nothing!

It happened already. Sony's business model is proven. You're saying NOT REALLY to something that already happened. If M$ could do it all over again, they'd put the HD-DVD drive in the 360.
You're starting to get annoying. It's like you don't read. YES IT WORKED FOR THE PS3. The Xbox 360 is a TOTALLY different story. If they had put HD DVD standard then the 360 would have failed miserably.
1. They would have had to release the xbox 360 in 2006 head to head with the PS3.
2. They would have to increase the price of the console.
The 360 WOULDNT be where it is today had they put HD DVD in it.

NutmanIV you couldn't be more right. Microsoft DOES NOT care about the High Def DVD game. I can download Ratatouille of Xbox live in HD and it is Blu Ray only on disc. They would have never put HD DVD into their system. It isn't their war to win. Toshiba fell on it's ass trying to defeat Sony and BDA. I support red and will admit that.

You're all right. But that doesn't change the fact that we're out the money we spent on our HD-DVD's. No matter how you slice it, Microsoft has no idea what they are doing. They didn't plan for the future. And since they didn't plan ahead, I own a format that won't be around by summer time. I'm pissed.

I can understand being upset. I only support red and have bitter feelings myself. Then again it's only High Def movies were talking about. Don't let it eat away at you. It's just the way the big business works. I sit in meetings everyday with these pooh heads and they care about one thing. THEMSELVES

You guys are right about Microsoft, they never intented for the XBOX 360 to be a video player, only a gaming console. As for Sony it was teh opposite, Sony's main priority was to push Blu-ray because that's where the real money is. Why do you guys think Sony is being trying for almost 30 years to push for their proprietary media (Betamax, MiniDisk, UMD, etc.) to become the standard for all companies to use? Because if they were to succeed to create a media format of entertainment for every company to use, then everyone from movie studios to hardware manufactures and video game developers would have to pay Sony a fee to use its medium.
That's why Nintendo is actually using their own proprietary seudo-DVD format for the Wii games, because Nintendo didn't want to pay the DVD group royalties and fees for using their format (DVD). Which is the same reason why the Wii will not be able to play standard DVD's even with a firmware update.
Sony new knew 20 years ago that software licensing is where the money really is. That is why Sony tried to partner Nintendo 20 years ago to create the CD add-on for the SNES. But Nintendo is not affraid and saw that the contract Sony laid out was to vague and would have given Sony majority rights and royalties over the games so Nintendo pulled out leaving Sony with the blueprint to create the PlayStation.

Hell, I've tried over the last year, but apparently HD & Blu is a current world problem that needs our undevided attention. We have famine in Africa, world wide environmental issues, insane gas prices, war in Iraq and border issues in the US. But oh no, Hi-def format issues are far more important to bicker and argue about!
Amazing, isn't it? People making thread after broken record thread over an electronics box that plays discs. It's really sick when you think about it. Fanboys . . . talk about a group of people that really need to lighten up and get a life!

Oh please! Let's not get started on the wii. That's another thing I wanna throw under a Mac truck.
I buy a Wii last year. I buy 5 or 6 games that are ok. Then, the crazy software companies announce that they don't want to develop games for the damn thing. So now I have to rely on Nintendo to develop games for my system. I mean, come on man!!!!! What the hell. They release 1 damn Mario every 10 years. Everything else is pretty much junk.
What do these companies think they're doing? They just release consoles and players that are good for a year. It's a big joke. I'm sick of this crap. I'm sure I will go blu eventually. I'm sure all of us will go blu within the next year or so. But the point is, we had no choice.
Screw Wii & HD-DVD! Screw Toshiba & Microsoft too. I hate them! I will never buy their products again. Paramount & Universal can go screw themselves too, because if they didn't back this defunked format we would have never invested our money in such a looser!

Well, last year I read some 'scuttlebut' about how the NEXT generation of Wii might include a DVD drive. Just speculation, but it's always possible. The 'DVD royalty' is not much of an issue (per unit made/sold), and easily added to the player's cost, and paid by the end user = customer.
