I returned my RCA HDV5000 and Picked up a Toshiba D3 on Boxing Day. I am just wondering does anyone know if a firmware update will come that will downsample DD+ and TrueHD to 1.5 DTS through the optical? I know the 1st generation Toshibas did. Or is Toshiba getting away from that process?

Ironbull, I have the HD A2 and at the moment I have the audio connected through optical to my receiver. It downsamples the audio to DTS like you mentioned so I don't see why a third generation model wouldn't do the same thing.

If you are having issues with it check Toshibas web site for the latest updates.

Toshiba seems to be moving away from the process. Rumor whispered around has it that Toshiba might have gotten flack from Dolby for converting their format to DTS. Regardless of the reason, the A3 (or D3) will downconvert DD+ and TrueHD to DD5.1/640kbps, while the A2 downconverted these codecs to DTS 1.5Mbps. At least DD 640kbps is still better than DD 448kbps found on standard DVDs.

Thanks guys. I am just trying to squeeze everything I can out of my gear. I have the latest firmware. I just thought that maybe these firmware update releases take time to develop for newer machines. I had the RCA just for the analog outs but (HERE IS WHERE I TAKE FLACK) I was not really wowed buy TrueHD through the 5.1 out. Even after calibrating with SPL. I found for my setup The DD+ and TrueHD downconverted to DTS 1.5 was more than sufficient. So I took the RCA back And bought the D3 At BestBuy. I was hoping for the downconvert to DTS on optical via Firmware. Oh well I am still happy with DD 640kbps and DTS core. Thanks again. If anyone has any info on the matter I would appreciate the help.
