Quote:Chief HD DVD format-backer Toshiba has issued a statement in response to Warner's announcement that it plans to drop HD DVD support, and back Blu-ray exclusively.

The unusual statement, which lacks the familiar bluster of so many previous press releases issued by both camps, appears to suggest that the HD DVD camp had no advance warning of Warner's decision to exclusively back Blu-ray, and goes on to say that the company will "assess the potential impact of this announcement with the other HD DVD partner companies and evaluate potential next steps."

The text of the statement follows below:

TOKYO, Jan. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Toshiba is quite surprised by Warner Bros.' decision to abandon HD DVD in favor of Blu-ray, despite the fact that there are various contracts in place between our companies concerning the support of HD DVD. As central members of the DVD Forum, we have long maintained a close partnership with Warner Bros. We worked closely together to help standardize the first-generation DVD format as well as to define and shape HD DVD as its next-generation successor.

We were particularly disappointed that this decision was made in spite of the significant momentum HD DVD has gained in the US market as well as other regions in 2007. HD DVD players and PCs have outsold Blu-ray in the US market in 2007.

We will assess the potential impact of this announcement with the other HD DVD partner companies and evaluate potential next steps. We remain firm in our belief that HD DVD is the format best suited to the wants and needs of the consumer.

Wow I guess when Sony hired the technology president of Warner Bros. this week that wasn't a clue.
Toshiba is about as dumb as the_dvd_chef, bowfiend, dguisinger, kucoloco, soydelsol, JServo, tummybanana who called me a "liar" and "shill" for posting the Warner goes to Sony article.

JServo,
would you like to sell me your Toshiba. The papers keep flying off my desk and I could use a good weight.

You know, you'ld probably be able to make a much more convincing argument if you left your insults out and stuck to the facts. You can even interject opinions if you back them with solid facts. But like the thread in question, you state nothing that actually correlates the Warner Exec's move to Sony with the WB exclusivity news. I'd speculate that's because there is none. If you can show some logical and reasonable thought processes in how you came to the conclusion that this mere coincidence was actually not a coincidence, then I'm all ears. Otherwise, you begin to sound a lot like a shill. But it sounds to me like you are trying to force the Warner Exec topic in order to use it as a podium to be able to rub dirt in other people's faces. But sorry, you have a lot more convincing to do that the two events are related...

CKwik240,
You really don't know how the business world works.

I suggest you get a good college education before even communicating with me.

I was right yesterday. "Warner goes to Sony." Did you read the Hollywood Reporter article? What don't you get? The President of Warner Technology was hired by SONY. That is not a move by a company that wants to stay neutral.

You bought the most expensive paper weight in history,
put others down when they warned you about it,
and still to this minute stay clueless to the inevitable fact.

HD DVD is the new Betamax. Have a happy New Year!!

be nice guys. And please be kind to the HD people. For a long time they've had a lot to say and well..today they don't, but I'm sure we'll hear all about the conspiracies, the payoffs and any of the other imagionary excuses HD can come up with.

Dude I payed 98.00 for my A2, so I look at it this way my wife will adopt a pretty good upconvert DVD player. While I convince her I need a Blu Ray player. LOL Guys yea I am not happy, but I will sleep tonight. We all took a chance when we dove in head first, life does go on. At least we know where the future of this format war is going. But I will not break the bank for a Blu Ray player. Lets just hope SONY responds and lowers the prices for the consumer.
