"It was also unclear yesterday whether the other studios backing HD-DVD would change sides, although it is understood Paramount has reserved the right to switch its backing to Blu-ray."

Agreed...nothing here is set in stone. Paramount is probably burying their faces in their hands right now wondering what to do. Universal is probably so mad they could just spit nails.

I was looking forward to Toshibas big Superbowl ad campaigns and big marketing push, but even I was shocked at how ineffective it all seemed...take the HD DVD ads with the Shrek characters interacting with the guy in the business suit (say Microsoft) - I mean here it is Superbowl Sunday, millions of beer-guzzling football fans are tuned in, and here's this dork in a suit talking about the look and sound of perfect. OMFG! What the hell were they thinking??? &

Come January first...just a few days ago, none of the ad campaigns stuck! I mean, can you remember any major imact an HD DVD ad had on you? I'm still getting chills over a mutating PS3! I mean, come on...a dork in a business suit...action movies...thrillers...horror and suspense...a dork in a business suit!?!?!?!?

It is from an article on the paid subscription part of Wall Street Journal. The article is from today so the writer of it spoke with Paramount during the weekend.

All this said. They could, at anytime, go in another direction without warning.

They say they will back HD DVD...note that they did not say exclusively.

It is only rumor that there is an 18-month deal, and if that's the case it means they put a price on their loyalty rather than making the choice based on what they believe is right...which means if they're stuck in something they wish they weren't then they deserve what they get.

If Paramount starts to release on Blu-ray again before the 18-months is up, then it would be clear they simply "thought" HD DVD was a good idea and for the sake of business they need to support Blu-ray.

It still isn't over for HD DVD. ANYTHING can happen still...we're being toyed with for a reason. Stop buying movies until something happens. Really, this is no time to invest in these technologies. Remember that Ultra-High Definition is still on the horizon as well.

Paramount only has an 18 month exclusive contract with HD DVD (I thought), so of course they are still going to back HD DVD. I’m sure once that contract is over though… Paramount will be coming back to Blu Ray, or they will already be back with Blu Ray, and just cut the ties with HD DVD. Of course this only MY opinion. I expect something big will happen for both sides in May, after WB officially goes exclusive with Blu-Ray.

Enough with the 4k ultra hi def.

Forget it. You know how effin' hard it is to get people wraped around the idea of HDTVs? Even NOW? And then yur gonna try and get them on 4K? Grow up. Really, there's got to be some level of reality here. We're AV geeks, pure and simple. If there was a 4k Tv tomorrow that cost less than 10k, i'd snap it up if there was content. But it ain't happening for the rest of the world.

The Paramount deal contains an out clause. Actually, a few. One, Paramount can write a check or (two) HD DVD sales (players) fall below a certain amount of units sold. Either way, the saving grace for HD is that whenever Paramount begins to release Blu Ray titles, they MUST also release the same title on HD unless HD fails to meet those sales parameters. But another reason this deal stinks for HD is that there is no requirement for Paramount to release any HD titles, which I can't imagine. How do you hand someone $150 million and not obtain certain guarantees...like I don't know...Braveheart or the Godfather. All HD gets is whatever Paramount releases is exclusive...so Paramount can do nothing and collect their $$$$$

Just a thought, Paramount could be back in the Blu by the time Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull comes to video? Just throwing that out there.

Paramount has officially issued its denial of the rumor -- originally printed in the Financial Times -- that it is very close to ending its exclusive support of HD DVD. The quick end to what had been reported as an 18-month agreement could be the result of a "get out" clause triggered by Warner Bros.' sudden departure from HD DVD releases. Whether this will follow last year's "Universal may switch" rumor, that didn't happen, or last month's "Warner may switch" rumor, that did, remains to be seen. Until we hear otherwise, Paramount, Transformers and Shrek are still HD DVD only, whether they like it or not.
