The Paramount deal contains an out clause. Actually, a few. One, Paramount can write a check or (two) HD DVD sales (players) fall below a certain amount of units sold. Either way, the saving grace for HD is that whenever Paramount begins to release Blu Ray titles, they MUST also release the same title on HD unless HD fails to meet those sales parameters. But another reason this deal stinks for HD is that there is no requirement for Paramount to release any HD titles, which I can't imagine. How do you hand someone $150 million and not obtain certain guarantees...like I don't know...Braveheart or the Godfather. All HD gets is whatever Paramount releases is exclusive...so Paramount can do nothing and collect their $$$$$

Let's see...Paramount HD DVD releases since they went HD DVD exclusive...Starting from September 2007.

Next, Top Gun, Transformers (DreamWorks), A Mighty Heart, Face/Off, Shrek the Third (DreamWorks), Star Trek: The Original Series - Season One, Old School, Hot Rod, Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy (DreamWorks) and The Heartbreak Kid (DreamWorks). Not a bad list.

Upcoming releases include...

Zodiac: Director's Cut, Into the Wild, Things We Lost in the Fire (DreamWorks), Beowulf (2007), Bee Movie (DreamWorks) and Star Trek: The Original Series - Season Two.

Just a thought, Paramount could be back in the Blu by the time Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull comes to video? Just throwing that out there.

Paramount has officially issued its denial of the rumor -- originally printed in the Financial Times -- that it is very close to ending its exclusive support of HD DVD. The quick end to what had been reported as an 18-month agreement could be the result of a "get out" clause triggered by Warner Bros.' sudden departure from HD DVD releases. Whether this will follow last year's "Universal may switch" rumor, that didn't happen, or last month's "Warner may switch" rumor, that did, remains to be seen. Until we hear otherwise, Paramount, Transformers and Shrek are still HD DVD only, whether they like it or not.
