JServo, did you know that washing your clothes wears them out, as does driving your car?? Who cares!! I buy electronics to use them, and if one piece of equipment can be used for multiple tasks than great! If you're so worried about premature failure buy the extended warranty on the PS3, it's cheaper than buying a second Blu-Ray player.
I know from my experience, my equipment is usually obsolete before it ever fails. Case in point my 2 year old Toshiba A1 (tongue in cheek).

JServe,
Bad/flawed designed cause failures. The early PS2's had a flawed design with their DVD drives. Playing a movie on that system stressed its weak link. This is similiar to the XBOX 360, even a system that was designed to play games failed quite regularly playing them. Minus any major flaw in Sony's implementation of their PS3, I would feel very comfortable playing movies in my PS3 (which I do).
Chemteam,
The PS3 has always, from its inception, been designed to do more than play games. See what Kutaragi said about the PS3 to IGN back in 2005 http://ps3.ign.com/articles/618/618533p1.html This should hopefully quell any fears about playing movies on your PS3.

Whoops. Meant to say ps3 hardware and not the ps3 hard drive. I realize the ps3 hard drive can be swapped out. Unless you are going to open up your ps3 and periodically switch out the motherboard and multiple cpus as well as the blu-ray drive whenever it shows excessive wear (like you can do on a pc) watching movies on the ps3 will wear it out faster. Its kinda like driving a BMW luxury 750i sedan as if it was a sports car in the autobahn. BMW's are a marvelous piece of engineering and it would probably hold its own for a short amount of time. However, over time the excessive wear and tear would decrease the life of the vehicle itself since it was never originally designed to be a sports car. Thats my opinion. Take it for what its worth.

In this case however, a better analogy for playing Blu-ray movies on a PS3 might be "using a sports car to pick up a carton of milk at the corner store".

Cheamteam,
I don't disagree that you will wear your PS3 out faster if you use it for both movies and games. Of course you will, you're using it more. It's just that I completely disagree that you'll wear it out "exponentially" faster like you mentioned.
In any case, I'm not going stop you from buying another blu-ray player.
Cheers

What is so amazing about the PS3 is that you can leave the thing on for months and it still humms as if you just turn it on for the first time. I've read that people use the collective processing power of the the PS3 (Folding Home Program) have left their's on since middle of 07'. WOW!!! So I don't think durability is an issue with the PS3. Personally, I like to turn mine off. My TV generates so much heat in the room that a heater is not needed and we all know that heat kills electronics.
