This is similiar to the XBOX 360, even a system that was designed to play games failed quite regularly playing them. Minus any major flaw in Sony's implementation of their PS3, I would feel very comfortable playing movies in my PS3 (which I do).
Chemteam,
The PS3 has always, from its inception, been designed to do more than play games. See what Kutaragi said about the PS3 to IGN back in 2005 http://ps3.ign.com/articles/618/618533p1.html This should hopefully quell any fears about playing movies on your PS3.

In any case, I'm not going stop you from buying another blu-ray player.
Cheers
