Yeah I don't think they ever planned to have one built in to the 360. It does not go with Microsoft's strategy for the xbox 360.

Actually, Microsoft did have plans to create a 360 with built-in HD-DVD for a while, but I wouldn't be surprised if they scrapped the plans now simply because of the assured low sales in the wake of this Warner exclusivity. Had Warner waited until May to become exclusive, an HD-DVD-equipped 360 would likely have tipped the scales in HD-DVD's favor simply because 360 fans love having the best equipped machine. Just look at how they bought the Elite when all it offered was HDMI and a larger HD.

However, with all analysts and end-users believing that this is the end for HD-DVD, myself included (though I continue and will continue to buy HD-DVD movies), Microsoft doesn't have much of a choice in not creating this new version of the 360 platform.

To be honest, if Microsoft wanted to help the HD-DVD cause, they should have offered native HD-DVD playback in Windows Media Player. That's right, they should have given Windows Media Player the ability to play back HD-DVD movies. Why? Because everyone has Windows Media Player. Most of us prefer Windows Media Player to other programs as well. In addition to that, having native HD-DVD playback would have allowed anyone considering HD content to save money on the playback software. Cyberlink PowerDVD is 100$. Nero 8 with the ability to playback HD content is a minimum of 80$.

However, I'm not in Microsoft's marketing department. If I was, I wouldn't even allow for Windows Vista Home Premium or Home Basic to ship, I would only sell Vista Ultimate and scale the price down to 150$. It's up to them to decide what is fair and what isn't and as much as I disagree with them on what's offered, I have no power to change it.
