It's fine to say that they made a business decision, but to say that they weren't paid off is ludicrous.

When the studio had a hand in the development of HD DVD, that's not something you would give up without some sort of incentive. They could have just as easily went the other way and sided with HD DVD exclusively, and that way things would be playing out much differently.

So I'm sorry, I find it very hard to believe that WB would choose Blu-Ray freely after having such a dedicated alliance with HD DVD.

Some more bad news for HD DVD. Paramount going blu???

Just found this posted on Yahoo! and MovieWeb.com

http://tech.yahoo.com/blogs/null/64393, http://www.movieweb.com/dvd/news/57/25557.php

and this as well,

It just doesn’t look so perfect for HD DVD if this happens to be true. The speculation on this is just as hairball when the rumors came about WB going exclusive with Blu-Ray. No one believed it, but it happened.

Well, if they didn't get paid, they're pretty stupid. To become Blu-ray exclusive, they could have asked anything from Sony. They're the only ones who could end the war, not Disney with their 20 releases a year or Fox with their subpar MPEG2 encoded disks.

Plus, WB are nothing but a bunch of liars. It wasn't long ago, December 13 maybe? When they specifically shot down rumors they had no plans to go exclusive - then BAM!

So seriously, just because they say they were not paid off doesn't mean it's true. It has to be, there was no other reason for the defection.

Oh well, all the Blu-Ray guys are happily rejoicing now, but the sweet victory will turn sour very shortly when most of the owners have to toss away the players just to get 1.1 compliant machines. Not to mention it's pretty sad when the format's best player on the market currently is a gaming console.

I just noticed some interesting news in the latest (January 2008) issue of WIDESCREEN REVIEW. On pg 18, in a Blu-ray related news story, the following info about Profile 1.1, and forthcoming discs that have the 1.1 interactive features...

The first release from Fox to take advantage of these new developments will be SUNSHINE, which will have a feature called, "A Brilliant Vision", allowing you the option of opening behind-the-scenes footage of certain scenes in a picture-in-picture window while watching the movie. We got a demo of one scene and it really was a compelling feature.

Fox also touched on future ideas they are hatching for special features, including the ability to view different takes in a picture-in-picture window while watching the final take, to gain a better understanding of the filmmaking process and see what other choices the director and editor had when piecing together the final cut. Fox assured us that legacy Blu-ray Disc Profile 1.0 players would GRAY-OUT the "A Brilliant Vision" option to minimize compatibility issues that may arise, since a Profile 1.1 player is necessary to view the featurette.

Hey Hendrix, I just picked up Sunshine tonight on my way home. I'll give you my impressions of my first Blu-ray PinP experience after I watch it later.

Well, compelling if you're new to that sort of thing. I've been watching Picture-in-Picture for a long time now on my HD DVD player...now it just seems like something that was always there, and in HD DVD's case, that's exactly what it is.

For those of you who have never tried HD DVD, then you might want to keep an ambient light on in the room while you view your Blu-ray "Sunshine" for the first time...I wouldn't want any of you to experience siezures from the awe of it all!
