What I find amazing about the PS3 is that it seems more than the sum of it's parts. As a video game system it's unparalled, as a Blu ray player it's at the very top. I recently discovered that the PS3 can access media content on your networked PC's. It can also play a wide variety of codecs, WMA, WMV, DivX, SACD, JPEG, MP3, MP4, GIF, BMP, and the list goes on. With the addtion of a keyboard and a mouse you can also use it as a compter and it can wirelessly (802.11 b/g WiFi) connect to the internet. The Flash Card Media Center (60 and 80 gig units) allows you to access flash memory in an instant. iPOD and video camera connectivity. I could go on and on about the PS3. Alot of people say, "I don't want a video game system for a player" like I said before in other threads I've seen some very high end HT's use the PS3 as a Blu ray player and true no DTS MA or analogs out but as a player IMO no HDDVD player could match it.

Can you attach an external USB drive to the PS3 and play movies off it? If you can do that...that would be perfect.

As a matter of fact, you can. Both USB flash drives and external USB hard drives.

The ps3 actually is a nice piece of hardware. Its only drawback is that as a gaming machine is stinks in regards to software development. If they had made it more game developer friendly then it really would be perfect.

Yes Falc that and all the things Tony mentioned above. most of em also with the 360 except for the browser part, which i find totally unecesary. i have a pc and a notebook.
Not hating or anything, you can whine if you want to ... i have both systems.
WHAT I HATE ABOUT THE PS3
-Installing games. including demos. some newer games take long,
-Friends list (handeling) sucks. cant see what friends are doing, or much for that matter.
-Controllers dont rumble, since launch.. new controllers coming, very expensive.
-Regular, and classic game selection sucks.
-No true HD sound as a Blu player.

I can see your arguement for everything else, but for gaming it's the bottom of the list.
Why:
-Installing games. including demos. some newer games take long,
-Friends list / online playing is years behind Xbox live. Even if it's free.
-Regular, and classic game selection sucks.

if you want to take advantage of TrueHD with the PS3 and your receiver, then you actually have to set the Blu-Ray Disc audio output setting for HDMI (in the PS3's BD/DVD settings menu) to "PCM" instead of "bitstream." This will allow the PS3 to losslessly expand the Dolby TrueHD soundtrack into pure multi-channel PCM for decoding by your receiver. You will get better results that way than by sending a regular compressed Dolby Digital signal to the receiver as you are doing now.
Currently when you set the PS3's HDMI audio output to "bitstream," advanced audio codecs such as Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio are "truncated" to their "core" Dolby Digital and DTS components, thereby losing quite a bit of the audio data, which makes the sound quality suffer.
At some point in the future, the PS3 may support bitstream audio for Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD - or at least on-board decoding of DTS-HD and conversion to PCM - but as of the latest 2.1 firmware upgrade, that feature is still not available.

Can you take advantage of DolbyTrueHD on a BD disk using the PS3? YES
Does the PS3 decode TrueHD? YES
Does it bitstream to a reciever so the reciever can decode it? NO
Doest it internally decode dts HD/MA? NO
Is SONY and dts working on an update to have the PS3 decode dts HD/MA internally? YES.
If you try to decode dts HD/MA with the PS3 what will happen? You will get the 1.5 Mbps core which is higher than the standard 700+Mbps dts.
Bottom line is, YES the PS3 does decode DolbyTrueHD, with dts you only get the core.
Due to some hardware that the PS3 does not have it will never be able to bitstream HD codecs.
EDIT: Since I've gotten the 605 I've listen to Dolby TrueHD and it still does not compare to LPCM, I have'nt heard a dts HD/MA track yet, but I always like dts over Dolby anyway so I'm sure that it will come close to LPCM.

Honestly, I don't see what the big deal is, outside of it being the cheapest BR player. I don't think there is much I can do on a PS3 that I can't already do on my 360. I could justify buying a PS3 if they had just one game that was a must-have for me, because I know there are other PS3 games that I would also enjoy, just not enough to justify buying the console. There are a few exclusives that I would like to play, but nothing that justifies paying $400+ just to play them. Basically all of the games I want (Wii titles excluded) are either on both systems or are M$ exclusive.

Sorry Kuco, I did'nt mean to sound crazy, I set the PS3 to bitstream and the 605 to LPCM HDMI. The reason for doing this is that LPCM is the same if you bitstream it or not and it sounds better to me than DTHD, the 605 will automatically decode LPCM as PCM 5.1 or 7.1 (which ever you tell the PS3 to bitstream)at 4.6 Mbps. Since I don't listen to DTHD and I like the reciever to decode I just leave it on bitstream. Especially if I'm watching a SD-DVD with regular 5.1 audio codecs. When April 1st comes I'll be getting the Panasonic BD50K which decodes and bitstreams everything but the kitchen sink.

From what I understand the XBOX 360 does not internally decode HD codes and only has HDMI 1.2, you need 1.3 to get DTHD or dts HD/MA.

Kuco, why get rid of it? Keep it. I know that my PS3 will retire to just playing games and media networking, where as the Panny will have all Blu ray and SD-DVD duties. I wish I could get a profile 1.0 or 1.1 bitstream Blu ray player for around $350-400 bucks. I'm not a big fan of bonus features. I just want great picture and sound. I think the Panny BD50K will run about 6 or maybe 700 bucks.

Well, I do recommend if you're getting the 705 that you do get another player that bitstreams if you want your revceiver to do the decoding. And if the PS3 only serves as a player then do sell it.

Take GTA4 as an example
PS3 : 640p standard definition x no AA x 24 average FPS.
X360 : 720p high definition x 2xAA x 29 average FPS.
The truth may shock you, but PS3 is pretty much worthless as a gaming console.

PS3= 630P@2xAA(FP16?) <-- the HDR here is still in question, but the consensus seems to be that it is better than FP10.
360=720P@2xAA(FP10)
A quick Google search tells me FP16 HDR looks better, but FP10 HDR is faster (and so eats less processing power, which allows them to render at a higher resolution). FP16 looking better is what they were saying, but it never hurts to check around I hadn't heard the terms FP10 or FP16 before.

While GTA IV is pushing the PS3 and 360 to the limit, it also runs amazingly well. Sure, there are framerate hitches here and there and (particularly on 360) there is some texture pop-in, but it actually runs better than I expected. That a game with great AI, an awesome physics engine and a detailed open world runs so well and with such short load times is a technical marvel. For that, I can forgive framerate issues and some noticeable aliasing.

Quote:
For those wanting to know which version looks better, the edge goes to the PS3. The textures and framerate are comparable, but the PS3 has far less pop-in. The 360 has richer colors, but the PS3 has better anti-aliasing making it look a little cleaner. Because GTA IV can preload onto the PS3 hard drive, the in-game loads are faster. Don't worry Xbox owners, the load times are rarely more than 30 seconds and don't occur very often. The slight visual edge goes to PS3, but the 360 is no slouch. Either version will do you proud.

The PS3 is the only game console that has 7.1 uncompressed LPCM video games (Resistance Fall of Man).
Microsoft's Director of the Game Technology Group (formerly ATG), Scott Henson said,

Maybe he was talking about the XBOX 360 because, Metal Gear Solid 4 has 1080p pitcure and 7.1 uncompressed audio on a 50 GB BD

You may remember our recent PS3 feature in which the reality of 'Full HD' 1080p games for the console was thrown into some doubt. Scott openly offered his opinion, stating: "I think 1080p, just to address that directly, will be basically impossible. I think if you talk to any developer they will tell you that they will not have a performing game at 1080p."

Sorry but IGN is one of the few sites that said the PS3 version of GTA looks better, there are plenty of side by side clips on the internet of the games running together and the 360 version looks better. It has a better GPU than the PS3 and it's considerably easier to develop for. All without having to use a hard drive install (which is rumored to be coming in the spring update) I have a 60 gig PS3 as a blu-ray player and still haven't seen any use for it as a gaming system

FYI... another PS3 new feature!
> Sony quietly introduces YouTube Uploading capability from the PS3...
Mainichi Issho, a Japan-only PlayStation Network game that's been out since 2006, has quietly brought a pretty killer function to the PlayStation 3. Players can now record gameplay and upload clips to YouTube from within the console. Better still, Sony has confirmed that the toolset will be distributed to developers to integrate into games at their discretion. With the popularity of fan videos and YouTube, it's great to see Sony embracing networks outside of their own. Good stuff, and forward-thinking on Sony's part.

So, the format war is over and you guys need something to fight over! Of all things . . . game consoles!? It really seems quite pointless since game consoles have been in direct competition for close to three-decades. It isn't like any one console is in danger of knocking out another one over night, so it really is silly to fight over which one you think is better than the next. Everyone has their favorite for one reason or another (personally, I prefer PC MMO online gaming), so, for the love of Pete . . . let it go already!

Well dudes...I got a 40GB PS3 last night (came with Spiderman 3) and I gotta say I LOVE it. I set it up and had it going in 5 minutes. I bought a 500GB external drive that will be connected to it and store all videos and pics. I updated it to version 2.35 which is the latest firmware version. I checked out some pics via a USB key, watched Spiderman 3 on bluray which looked good.
I gotta say the PS3 is so much more than a game console or a bluray player. This thing really is an all-in-one media centre. I was able to get on the internet through the built in wi-fi easily too.
I have a question though. I went to apple.com/trailers and tried watching some hidef players. I got the prompt on the screen that would say "Do you want to install the plugin?" and I clicked Yes...waited...and waited but nothing happened. I was not able to watch any of the trailers which tells me either the plugin never installed or it just can't play the videos. If any of you know how to get this to work I would love it cause I like being able to watch the trailers in hidef on my big screen.
Thanks in advance gents.
New PS3 lover.

Kinda like a Toronto Maple Leaf playing for the Montreal Canadiens, a New York Yankee playing for the Boston Red Sox, etc. You get the idea I'm sure. I'll get used to it.

I clicked Yes to install the plugin but nothing happened. I was hoping someone here got it to work without having to convert the trailer on a computer (I'm not going to waste my time with that). I hope I can just watch the trailer straight off Apples site through the PS3 browser, that would be sweet.

Falcon, no offence but you buying a PS3 is like Gerber of the Sens playing for the Leafs this coming season. It isn't right.
And the worst thing is that you've warmed up to this thing a lot quicker than I did. It took me at least a couple weeks to warm up to the idea of using a console as a Blu-ray player, but then again I've never owned a game console before.
BTW, I don't believe Apple has a Quicktime plugin for the PS3 console's OS as yet, so I think you're out of luck there. My goal is to get a bigger drive, get the BlueTooth keyboard, and install a Linux partition so that I can run Firefox (among 1,000 other programs) instead of that freaky browser the PS3 has.
One thing you should try is turning your PC (if you have it on a wired or Wifi network) into a media server for your PS3. You can do it through WMP or TVersity, and with TVersity you can do the Quicktime stuff, but you'll need to enter the links for what you want to watch on your PC. It's probably too much trouble IMO. But at least I do have my entire CD collection available through my PS3 from my computers, and also lots of home video and all my photos.

LOL. No offense taken. Thanks for the info. I'll try the TVersity thing tonight. Is this a program I download from my PC and install on my PC as well or do I need to install something on the PS3?
EDIT: I found the site and I'm reading all about it. This thing works on the XOBX 360 too.

I had an acute RA attack in all of my joints, I could'nt walk until Monday. PAINFULL AS HELL. But I'm about 70% now. If you like to play games rent Uncharted: Drakes Fortune. You're gonna love it, eventhough I know you want SOCOM. Maybe I'll get it as well and we can both play online?

For sure!. My bro and I are dying for Socom. I know we'll both get it and be online on the first day :p
BTW I love the wi-fi feature of the PS3. Works very well.
Glad you're feelin' better man. Hopefully that doesn't happen to you again. Get some rest and enjoy some movies and online gaming
That should bring the spirits back up.

You being in the hospital must be why you didn't respond to my PS3 menu problem post. I hope you're feeling better, Tone. I'm glad to hear you are out.
