Henning, so it's the expense and delay of including the Blu-ray drive and not the format itself? Your article failed to present this reasoning.

Obviously the delay had an effect on current market penetration, since the PS3 came out a year later than the Xbox 360 for even North America. However, I'm not sure if this was due to the inclusion of the Blu-ray player, the cell processor, or something else. I do know that the Nintendo game cube came before the XBox 360 and the PS3, however this did not cause the newer consoles to be a "casualty". I fail to see the "casualty of war" argument applicable there.

As far as cost, we found out the hard way that our child's XBox 360 costs much more than the $399 PS3. We paid an extra $99 just for the wifi add on, which the PS3 comes with internally! With all the add ons and adapters just to make our child's Xbox Elite functional, we have spent about $600.

Additionally, since the adoption curve for PS3 matches very closely that of the Xbox 360 in its first year, I don't get the entire premise of your article.

* XBOX 14.5 million
PS3 7.8 million

* One full year
So if the PS3 was released at the sametime the XBOX was the PS3 would lead in sales. This only helps what Skyhawk is saying. The Wii is the only wonder selling console on the market.

I'm a 360 fan but I LOVE final fantasy games. I'll break down and buy a ps3 when ff13 comes out. square enix is the best game developer in my opinion. I think the only thing holding the ps3 back now is lack of games. They need big exclusive titles to compete with the other consoles.

Could they have risked the Playstation as a gaming console in order to win the next generation HD movie format?

That's exactly what they did, and I'm sure they knew what they were doing all along. By coming to market with a $600 game console, they knew they would lose this round of the console wars. But even if they had the poorest game console sales, that would nearly guarantee a victory in the next-generation format war. I keep hearing, "consumers are choosing Blu-Ray" from studio execs and Sony fanboys. Um, no. PS3 Owners are choosing Blu-Ray because they got a player for free when they bought their game console — they account for the vast majority of Blu-Ray disc buyers. Warner dropped HD DVD in favor of joining Sony/Disney/Fox in selling movies solely to PS3 owners. Time will tell if Blu-Ray is capable of expanding beyond the UMD of the PS3.

I applaud Sony for their strategy. How else do you get consumers to buy something they don't appreciate, beyond bundling it with something else they were going to buy anyhow.

All Jokes Aside
As a gaming system PS# will ALWAYS be sunordinate to the other systems ,especially to multi system owners, for something as simple as ,THE ABSENCE OF VIBRATION
Simply stated, the stupidest thing they ever did was release the system without a rumble pack controler. As a gamer..being able to know when youve been hit, driving of the road ect.. is probably more important than most of us knew since weve been so used to having the feature...but not having it has pushe me and most gamers I know to by any game thats multi platform toward Xbox360 and even Wii and definately tell others to leave the Ps3 alone Unless they want a blueray player.
Cause in essence that what it is ... a Blueray player. Until it comes out with its own proprietary titles and the features that even the lesser next gen powered Wii has ...Rumble

Why can't people just admit that both the 360 and PS3 are great systems, and just enjoy the games. I am getting tired of fanboys. I have a 360 and love it. Due to some great upcoming software, I will get a PS3 this year. See, you can have both.

As they say on destructoid, stfuajpg!

I don't know if this has been posted yet, but Microsoft plans on realeasing a new version of the 360 later this year. With the impending release, I would assume the educated buyer would hesitate on purchasing one of the original 360s. As such, their sales will dip a little bit until then. Prior to CES, this new XBOX 360 was rumored to contain an HD DVD player however, I don't think it will happen now.
