HEY UGO,
did you not read the article posted, because your numbers differ from the article that you left a post on, hmmm i wonder who to believe ??????
Ugo's numbers are worldwide, NPD are americas only.
From this link you can see the approximate worldwide sales numbers for every week.
http://vgchartz.com/weekly.php
You can see that every week since november PS3 has sold more than XB360 worldwide. Yes, the XB360 still has sold a total of 16.5M consoles, and the PS3 only 9.5M consoles.
As you can see from the worldwide hardware sales, the combined sales from PS2, PS3 and PSP gives Sony a big percentage of the gaming market.

I think that the only reason Sony is still selling and producing games for PS2 after a year of the release of the PS3 is because they know their "all mighty" PS3 is not sellling as good as they thought. So from a corporate standpoint, the PS2 has become Sony's lifeboat. If the PS3 does not pick it up from the gaming perspective, the PS2 "lifeboat" will deflate soon leaving Sony clinging onto Blu-Ray alone.

Well when you own a monopoly on the OS software market you should have a greater profit margin than your competitor.

I agree, Sony is loosing around $400 to $500 on every console. I don't know you but to me that looks like a sign of desperation.

Well Sony has been able to cut the production cost of the PS3 to around $400 bucks.

Analysts Applaud Efforts to Shrink PS3 Chips
Stringer's promise to raise Sony's overall margins to 5% by the Mar. 31 fiscal yearend appears easily within reach. And margins should continue to improve as Sony's video-game division, Sony Computer Entertainment, trims the console's manufacturing costs and revs up output.
Nikko Citigroup's Kota Ezawa estimates the games division will lose $1.4 billion this fiscal year, following last year's $2.1 billion loss. And while he doesn't expect the business to be prosperous until late 2009, Ezawa applauds Sony's efforts to shrink the PS3's chips and tweak its design. Already such changes have cut the cost per machine to around $400 now, from above $800 just before it went on sale in November, 2006, he says. (The PS3 with an 80-gigabyte hard-disk drive retails in the U.S.

Well, I've been critical of Sony somewhat in the past, but to say that "they can't sell anything at a profit" is just UNTRUE! Sony has had several overall profitable divisions over the last few years:
Cell Phone operations - with ERICSSON)
Theatrical Film operations - SONY PICTURES
HDTV operations - BRAVIA FLAT-PANEL
Yes, they have spent well north of $1 billion on costs related to PS3 development/marketing, and Blu-ray operations. But they are completely focused making both of these the center of their overall entertainment strategy, and will stop at nothing to insure that these will be making profits sooner than later, in the coming years. Even to go as far as to reportedly pay Fox $120 million to remain Blu-ray exclusive - just another expense the company feels is justified to push for a PROFITABLE SUCCE$$ to PS3 and Blu-ray.
A recent PROFIT NOTE on Engaget's website a few months back...
"Sony reported its second quarter earnings today, and while the company's overall profits were up, at ¥90.5B ($790M), the Playstation division's losses for the quarter came in at ¥96.7B ($844M), double those of a year ago. Sony says that once it's done accounting for all the recent PS3 inventory changes, it hopes the Playstation division will break even -- potentially in the second half of the fiscal year. Of course, since the PS3 is sold at a loss, the numbers might indicate that Sony's selling more PS3s than ever, but something tells us that's not exactly the plan."

Nice for them. I don't mean to sound like a sore HD-DVD fanboy but I've read in the past from reputable sources about Sony's deceptive manubers, so I find it hard to believe that Sony found a "magical cure" and were able to reduce cost to nearly half in such a short period of time. In my very personal opinion, either Sony is inflating the numbers so companies invest in the PS3 via games and such, OR the "reduced chip" and other components now used are low-end components. After all Sony doesn't label their consoles like PC companies do, so for all we know (as an example) PS3 used to have at launch Intel Centrino Dual Core 2 processors but their "reduced ship" might now be an old Intel Celeron (I know those are not the chips but is just an example).
Like I said, I'm not whinning about HD-DVD loosing ground, I just don't trust corporations with dubious past such as Sony.
