Are any of you having problems with upscaling regular DVD's on your PS3's?
http://community.eu.playstation.com/showthread.php?p=3480105
It sounds to me like a setting on the PS3 or else this would have been more widespread.

I recently brought some dvds (smallville season 1 and naruto season 2) and was watching them using my regular dvd player with no picture problems. Then my dvd player decided it doesn't want to work so i use my ps3, i was to understand that dvds were suppose to be upscaled to HD but wen i play the dvds the picture is pixelated and slightly fuzzy (Like VHS quality) wat can i do to fix this?

Quote from the same guy:
Seems he has no problem after all. I mostly use my PS3 to playback DVDs and it upscales pretty good to 1080p. My dedicated DVD player upscales a little bit better from what I can see but not a major difference. So my dedicated player is now collecting dust even though it's slightly better at upscaling.

I think the problem is the video transfer for smallville season 1 (That being the worst) because my other dvds aren't as bad but still not as clear as i would like.
Well thanks for all your answers

Yeah but his first sentence...
Then he watches them on a PS3 and it looks like VHS? I thought PS3's were supposed to be good DVD upscalers? Unless he doesn't have the latest firmware but he posted that thread today so you would think he would have done that.

PS3 upscaling is fine, but to make sure it's "life" is used to the fullest, I only use my PS3 for Blu-ray viewing. For upconverted standard DVDs, I use either my Toshiba A1 HD-DVD player (1080i), or my (cheaper) 2-year old Sony DVD player w/upconversion to 1080i. The Toshiba has the edge in overall picture quality, so for those great "action", "sci-fi" etc films, yes I'll use it - but for everything else I'm happy with the cheaper Sony standard DVD player.

Like Hendrix said, the PS3 does a fine job upscaling DVDs, but dedicated players like the Toshiba or my Philips DVD player do an even better job. On my PS3 a dvd upscaled to 1080p really looks a lot better than when I play it back at 576p (both on my Philips and PS3).
It could be that he is using an HDMI cable and hasn't set his PS3 to Full range RGB, this will make the picture look a bit washed out, with less depth and less colour.

It can also matter as to WHEN he purchased a PS3. When I got mine last year [May/June], it's DVD output capability was only for 480p, and I had to apply the firmware update for the higher upconvert resolutions. When I now check that link, the poster doesn't say anything about when he acquired the unit, nor what the upconvert setting is... so it's quite possible the resolution is just standard 480p.

I have the LOTR box set, and I use my PS3, and it upscales it to 1080p and it looks great. As I was saying to Falcon, I still want a HDXA2. Also I just found out that my reciever has analog inputs, the only thing is my PS3 does not.
So next week it's ONKYO 605 time like my bro.

Tony I was going to buy the Onkyo 805 (hopefully before summer) but now I'm thinking of getting the 875 as it ups the watts to 140 per channel (versus 125 per channel on the 805) and it has the HQV Reon Chip for upscaling!
I know it's going to be crazy expensive but I'm thinking I wont need a received for a very long time after this. I'll keep checkin Ebay and I may get lucky and score the 875 used or something by then.

Well, good things (blessings) sometimes happen to those who wait...
I've never owned any editions of the 3 LOTR DVDs, until about 6 months ago. To my shock, Circuit City had a special sale, offering all 3 of those 4-disc SpEd Extended edition Box Sets for just $6.99 each!!! Not only did I buy one of each set, but I purchased a 2nd set of the Oscar-winner ROTK (3rd film), again for just another $6.99, which I keep (sealed) as a collector's item, to perhaps re-sell one day.
It really benefits a collector to pay attention to the weekly newspaper sales ads, online offers, etc, so as to build a collection with lower and discounted prices, rather than rushing to buy the latest release at retail. If you can, just rent first, and acquire later (at a lower discounted price).

That was a very good deal. Hopefully the Matrix Box Set (DVD) will be that cheap one day, but by the time that happens it will be on Blu ray.
