I have a new Ps3 (fun!) and a Tosh A-35, AWESOME, and for fun I tried "Talk to Me", great movie by the way. The upscaling on the A35 was far superior. But the upscaled picture on the PS3 is still better than my regular dvd player. If a HDDVD or BR disc picture was a 10, then regular DVD would be a 3, uplsclaing on the ps3 would be a 6, on the Tosh it would be an 8. So there you go.

I could not help noticing really poor quality when watching the long "making of" documentary found on the Close Encounters Blu-ray disc. It is in SD but even for that the quality was really poor.

I then put on my SD DVD of the release and the documentary looked far better.

Do we know if the PS3 upscales SD content on Blu-ray discs or is it only able to do it if the content is on DVD discs?

My PS3 upscales everything, including 480p MPEG-4 files on my hard drive and even 400x300 internet video streams, to 1080p. I believe by default (auto setting) the PS3 sends out the native resolution of any supported by your display device discovered during the initial HDMI handshake. My set top cable HD PVR works the same way. It's been awhile since I looked at the setup options, but I think you have to go into the video setup and tell it to use 1080p only.
