I gave up on using Windows Media Player 11 after I found out I needed everything from registry tweaks to codec registration and about 30 other steps and installs just to serve up my MPEG-4 files. Also, after setting up my third computer (Linux) and seeing how easy and more powerful it was, I decided to download the free TVersity for Windows and give that a shot.

Well, now I have registered over 30 streaming TV stations around the world (so far) and over 50 foreign radio stations that I can watch on the big screen remotely from my PS3. And my MPEG-4 library works too by default. Any streaming Internet TV video over 1000kps seems to look as good at least as standard TV. I just won an extra few thousand channels to choose from Sweet!

What is cool about TVersity, is that it will encode your various formats into something the PS3 can take when necessary. So uncompressed DV AVI, and my entire FLAC lossless encoded music library is now available (converted to PCM in real time).

BTW, I thought the Chinese government was censoring material for "appropriateness". Good grief, not only is "MTV China" showing all those sleazy American videos as about 20% of their content, the other 80% of Chinese content is enough to make one go take a cold shower. Oh my.

What exactly does this software do? I am a new PS3 owner and do not know all of the features of the machine.

OK Skyhawk, I going to be alittle lazy and not try to figure this out for myself. How do you disable the WMP11 software or do you need to?

Spence,

The software enables you to access media content from your networked PC and allows you to play it on the PS3. Your PS3 and your PC have to be connected to a router.

Ok Skyhawk, I hope that your delay is because you're typing step by step instructions. Ok I'm sorry the instructions were on the site you provided.

Skyhawk, how long this thing take to convert files? The spinning icon has been on for awhile now.

Get it working Tony?

The library searches, builds, and refreshes itself in the background so you can do other things within TVersity while it does so.. But if you don't click "Ok" to clear the dialog, the icon might spin forever! It should only take a few seconds per hundred files or so of each directory/drive you add, depending on the speed of your computer.

When adding media URLs for live Internet video & audio streams, you have to be connected to the Internet at that time because TVersity actually tests the URL by briefly connecting to it, otherwise an error message saying the URL is invalid will be shown.

It seems you can keep WM11 as a media server on the same machine, and the PS3 will recognize both as separate media servers. I eventually turned sharing off on WM11 to free up cpu and network resources needlessly being used, as well as prevent any instability problems that might occur down the road with both going at once.
