2004 is the 25th Anniversary of "Apocalypse Now" one of my favorite films. Is there a re-release planned for this, possibly including the original, Redux and "Hearts of Darkness" documentary? That's be SWEET! ;)

There should've been a two-/three-disc SE with both cuts of the film, all the deleted footage, and the documentary. I'm hoping for something special, too. :)

Count me in, if it actually happens. I've never seen Redux, but I love Apocalypse Now and would adore seeing Heart of Darkness.

I know this topic is prehistoric, but I finally caved in today. I found the non-Redux of Apocalypse Now used at my local video store and I bought it; I couldn't hold out any longer. I have rented or borrowed this film literally dozens upon dozens of times and it no longer made sense not to own it.
After watching the film again and absorbing its brilliance, it caused me to be pissed off again. Why on EARTH wouldn't Paramount re-release this film as an Ultimate Edition with better picture/sound/special features? The current DVD's do no justice to this classic, and I know there is high demand for it. Think about it, they wouldn't even have to create new special features. Release a 3 or 4 disc set with the original film, Redux film (one or both with Coppola and/or Sheen commentaries), Hearts of Darkness documentary (this doc. is award-winning, why wouldn't they have released it with the film in the first place?), and some deleted scenes from the rumored 6 hour work print of the film. Securing rights may be a problem, but nothing new would have to be made and I KNOW that it would be a huge seller.
This angers me because it simply does not make sense that they haven't done this yet. They're sitting on all of these great extras for this film that people very much want to see. Paramount releases multi-disc SE's of some of the worst films and they can't see fit to give Apocalypse Now it's due? Look at what they did with the marvelous Godfather set, and look at how many units of that they sold; Apocalypse Now would be a similar success. Now perhaps Paramount is waiting for the HD-DVD/Blu-Ray trend to hit, for I can't think of any other reason that they haven't brought this out yet. The 25th Anniversary would have been the perfect opportunity, and now that was 2 years ago.
This is more a rant than a question, but it really makes me mad. It's not as if this is some independent cult film with a small audience, this is APOCALYPSE NOW.
-TGP (I'm still holding out on Kill Bill and don't even get me started on Paramount's treatment of Braveheart and similar films...)

you're not happy with the video and audio on either dvd release? :o
i agree that "hearts of darkness" should be released on dvd, too, but a six-hour work print would be watched by about 1% of the people who buy a new special edition.

I don't have a primo sound/picture system, but actually, the sound and picture on this DVD is great. The helicopter blades and explosions are sweet and the picture is very good (The Redux picture quality is microscopically better). I just meant that if they were going to re-release this than they might as well digitally remaster it while they're at it; I don't really have many complaints in that area.
If they don't release the HOD doc. with Apocalypse Now, the LEAST they could do is release as a separate release. I would buy it individually.
And the six hour work print... They don't need to release the whole thing for I am sure that the sound and picture are probably terrible. I would just like to see certain rumored scenes, like the death of Dennis Hopper's character at the hands of Colby and Willard's fight through various guards (and the spearing of a guard through a boy). I would NOT like to see these re-inserted into the movie because the original edit is likely the tightest, they would just be interesting to see. After all, the Redux made this film longer but not any better, just more tedious. They did the right thing the first time.

ah, so you want deleted scenes rather than a six-hour version. gotcha. :)

While only the end of that article discusses Apocalypse Now, it sounds promising. Of course they call it an "elaborate, ENHANCED version" (I added caps), and if enhanced means that they changed it again then I might just stick with my original release. Of course, they also never discussed the Hearts of Darkness documentary, but at least this project is in the works. Knowing Coppola, that might not mean anything, but oh well...
