New reciever time. I have a PS3 and it does support DTHD but no DTS HD MA at the moment. Now the two revievers that are at the top of my list are the SONY STR-DG910 and the Onkyo TX-SR605. From what I've heard the SONY upconverts better, but does'nt have any HD decoders and it has 3 HDMI inputs, but the Onkyo has both HD decoders the only thing is that the PS3 currently does not support dts HDMA so the built in dts decoder really does'nt mean much. I could go on about the pros and cons for both recievers for days but you guys take a look at both and compare and tell me which one would you recommend. I'm gonna order one of these by Thrusday.

EDIT: Don't worry about mentioning the prices because I'll be ordering from AMAZON, it's just that Crutchfield had a better description of the two.

Well you need to get rid of the P$3 first.

That was mistake number 1.

NO.....The PS3 stays FunkMaster, but I was thinking of getting another BR player the Panny 30 something has both decoders. Plus (hopefully) the PS3 will have dts HD MA decoding via update. I read in AVS forum that dts and SONY are working together on this solution for the PS3.

I going to be replacing my aging Denon receiver next month, and my first choice was the Onkyo 805. But it turns out it's too big, stands too high, and weighs too much for my equipment shelves. So, I'll be getting the Onkyo 705, which still gives me the internal TrueHD and DTS HD-Master Audio decoding I'm looking for, plus plenty of power at 100w a channel (up from the 80w I'm using now, which is still plenty more than I need).

DVDTOWN's editor reviewed the 805 here at the site, and he's sold on it, but I'm sure either the 705 or 605 are equally up to the job. So, if I'm compromising by coming down a model number, maybe you'd be interested in compromising and moving up a model number. We'll meet in the middle.

John,

The budget committee chairperson (the Mrs.) has given approval for 910 or 605 and that's it. I wish I could go up to the 805,705, or the SONY DG1100. She also said next you'll be wanting new speakers to complement the reciever.

Well here is my advice Tony,

This worked in a joke so it should work on your wife, and may get her to up the budget.

Go out and get really hammered, I mean falling down drunk. Once you get home, make a ton of noise making your way upstairs to bed. As you stumble and fall she will wake up to help you, as she is helping you out of your street clothes into your bed clothes tell her

"hey hey hey, I am happily married and love my wife. Please leave me alone."

THis will impress her because to her it shows even in drunken stupor you still love her and would never cheat on her, and voila, your AMP budget will get raised.

Tony do not waste your time on the Sony. You will be Disappointed. Their lack lustre support on their amp side still needs work. Sony has always excelled at conectivity, but that is it. I can personally say that over the years, I have owned, Sony, Onkyo, Denon, and Pioneer Elite. My favorite to this day still is my Onkyo. That is currently what I have in my HT. I have seen the 605 in store for a decent price. I still have a Onkyo SR-600 upstairs, but went all out on the Onkyo SR-875! Totally worth it. My first Onkyo was the SR-600, and it still is a great receiver. I'm assuming the 605 would match the same quality. If you still have money to boot check out the HD-805 HD DVD player, it is way cool. If you don't have the money the XA2 from Toshiba is just as good. The 805, excells in audio reproduction! The Toshiba is close but Onkyo once again, an audio production company, just does it right!

PS, insider note, Onkyo is classified as an audio company. Actual instruments are tested through Onkyo equipment in the development stage of products.

Tony, I would definitely go with the Onkyo. No doubt about it. If you ask around Onkyo has a better name when it comes to receivers. Like you mentioned it has the hidef decoders built-in which is a nice feature. You probably won't get another receiver for a while so why not get the one with built-in lossless audio decoders? That way you're future-proofing your system.

My gf's Uncle has the Onkyo TXSR605 and it sounds really nice, especially when listening to a movie with Dolby TrueHD. Never tried the DTS HD though.

The HD-805 is just a rebranded XA2. Lots of info about this everywhere. Here's an example:

So if the HD 805 is a rebranded HD XA2 and it's cheaper wouldn't it be better to just get the HD 805?

EDIT: I thought Onkyo never released the HD 805 anyway?

What does engadgethehd know... You have to listen to it to actually hear the difference. Fall dealer demos 2007. rebranded some of the parts, I honestly believe that Onkyo configured some peices it self.

Well like I've said in other threads, my brother has a 605 and it sounds amazing. I also want a HDXA2 I've told Falcon in the past that's the only HDDVD player that I truely want. Toshiba has dropped prices on all HDDVD players except the HDXA2. ReaggieP, I've had 3 SONY HT recievers and I currently have the SONY STR K7000 with 2 HDMI inputs (almost a year old). The only thing is that it's HDMI passthrough the only way to take advantage of LPCM is to go multi channel analog in, but that's not an option with the PS3. I've already have a buyer for the K7000 a co-worker of mine wants it for his apartment.

Kuco I'm getting the Onkyo 805 also in a few months. I know I said I was getting the 875 because it has the Reon chip for upconverting DVD's but I don't really need it since I'm sure I'll get the HD XA2 at some point.

Kuco,

Like John said, that's a large reciever plus I looked at the price tag and got a nose bleed.

Tony if you're good with the 90 watts per channel of the 605 than get it. I can't see another receiver with the same options in that price range.

now the 875 is too much for a received. im considering the 705 and geting the tv also. my bday is coming up. lol

"...is only alittle bigger. not an issue." --kucoloco

The Onkyo 605 receiver lists for $600, is 6 7/8 inches high, and weighs 25 lbs.

The Onkyo 705 receiver lists for $900, is 6 7/8 inches high, and weighs 28 lbs.

The Onkyo 805 receiver lists for $1100, is 7 5/8 inches high, and weighs a little over 50 lbs.

So the 805 is about an inch taller than the others and weighs almost as much as the 605 and 705 combined.

It clearly seems to me that you should always attempt to buy the best product you can possibly afford, so not to be dissapointed in the future. If price is an issue and the Mrs. is concerned, keep in mind that most (if not all) of us are going to receive a rebate check from the Fed gov't this spring, possibly even those big earners with income in excess of $150k based on the new package in the Senate. Most of us married folks will receive at least $1,000.

So use a credit card, or borrow from savings and replenish once the check arrives. Don't get stuck wanting to "upgrade" in the distant future.

also, go with Onkyo, they last forever

Yes, as Tony points out, you can get these receivers a lot cheaper than list. Does anybody actually sell electronics at list anymore?

You can even buy them used and refurbished at substantial savings, up to half or more off. A quick Google search will turn up multiple buying options.

I'm curious Falcon (or anyone else) - has there been any N.American HD-DVD releases featuring DTS-HD or DTS-MA soundtracks? I'm aware there are many imports that have them, but what about here in N.A.?

(Many of the N.A. Fox Blu-ray releases have the improved DTS soundtracks, but I'm just curious about HD-DVD).

I just returned from Fry's Electronics today and noticed they had the Onkyo 805 on sale for $699, black or silver. That was actually less than they were selling the 705 for. Crazy. If the 805 weren't so big, high, and heavy (almost 60 lbs.) and my equipment cabinet weren't so confined, I would have probably bought one on the spot. Still, I don't need a new receiver for a while, so I'll wait and get the 705 before long.

John,

I got my 605 today with 2 HDMI cables. Man, it took 4hrs. just to set it up. It's a nice reciever just a pain to setup. It would'nt work on one of my HDMI slots on the back of the TV so I could'nt use the on screen menu til I resolved that problem, luckly I have 2 HDMI slots on my TV. Let me say this, before you do anything calibrate it first, but all and all it's a nice reciever.

Tony,

I assume you used the receiver's built-in speaker calibration set-up, with the little microphone? If you have a sound meter, too, I'd be curious to know what you measure in actual speaker levels (at the listening position) after the set-up calibration.

John,

Unfortunately I don't (since HT is my side passion besides computers) I'm really not too savy when it comes to HT recievers, but I must admit my SONY HT reciever plays music better, but I must say on movies and video games this reciever is second to none. I was playing my brother online and he beat me (go figure ) because I was so into the DD sound track. The arena effects were stunning, way better than my SONY (the SONY was never calibrated). I popped in the Fifth Element and was very satisfied that I made the right choice.

Since my HT room is medium sized, I really did'nt need the 100wpc of the 705 like I thought. Over all if this is ONKYO's entry level reciever than the higher ones will not disappoint as well. I have not tried a SDVD I'm dying to see the upconversion. as long as I don't see deminished quality than I'll be satisfied. The funny thing is that my wife asked me was I satisfied?
