Nice, finally something worth buying...NOW I can watch my Ratatouille blu-ray...

EDIT: No, really, with a larger hard drive, the dual shock thing...now, it is worth it. Oh, and it also plays games.

So how much is this 120 or 160 GB hard drive PS3 going to sell for? I imagine it's going to cost more than $499?

Guys, i Purchased the 40 ps3 because i didnt wanna play ps2 titles. but noticed my 40.. got eaten up fast. Because the ps3 Installs a portion of games in the drive in order to be able to play them, wether you got the disc, or a demo.. something I find fustrating when i wanna try something FAST! ...and thats on top of the fact, tat their downloads are kindaslow. then you gotta install for a few mins. so it eats up your space, as temp install space.

So you get the idea, 40 ps3. i rented Turok, and burrowed NFS pro speed.. and downloaded a few themes about 8 trailers, and i had very little space left.

Unlike what im used to in the 360. pop the game in. GO!!.. or Download a demo and then BAM! all while the fiance makes a 15 min call.

I didn't know that Kuco, about the games portion of a game being installed. A little annoying if you just rented a game and want to play it right away.

I didnt know that either all this time. even though i dont planto do much gaming

..I eventually go sick of it, and popped in a 100 gig sata I had laying around. THATS why the make the hd upgradable so easy.

So are Sony and Microsoft in a race to see who can get more SKUS out of the PS3 and 360?

I dont think MS ever cared about skus.. they started with a bunch. now Sony talked alot of crap about the 360... then ultimately accomplishing the exact same thing.

Well if they discontinue the 80GB you can say good-bye to any backwards compatibility for PS2, which will just cause more people to buy PS2 units instead of PS3s, the PS3 has two short comings, cost and lack of worthwhile games.

As for the price drop, if this happens it could bring ruin to BDA and Sony. Why? Sony is quite simple, they will be increasing their losses on the system units sold, and they won’t show a profit margin in the green on this system until Microsoft is ready to replace the 360 most likely. BDA, that’s a little more complicated, the problem is the other primary members, mostly manufactures of Blu-ray stand alone units, are having a difficult enough time competing with the prices Sony who's PS3 and entry level player are $50 lower than theirs, now go and drop the PS3 by $100 that's putting the price well below what they can afford, and will change Sony's Blu-ray market share from 60% to at least 70-80%, leaving 20-30% for the other 4 manufactures, they're liable to tell Sony where they can stick BDA after a stunt like that, they leave BDA will probably also loose other backers from the technology industry, they may still have studio support after that, but who knows, studios may look and conclude that Blu-ray is dependent on the PS3 only then and drop the format then because a game system which loses money just from being sold is not something you want your business sales based on.

I noticed that too the first time I put in Unreal Tournament 3 on my ps3. I will stand corrected if I am wrong about this guys but I believe the ps3 installs games onto the hard drive to speed up load times. It is a 1st gen blu-ray drive so load times presently are quite slow for games unless a portion of the game is installed. Remember the very first dvd players and how long they took to load up the discs? Games require access to their respective discs much more frequently than movies so by installing a portion or even all of the game on the hard drive it can bypass this process entirely. Future ps3s will probably have faster drives which will in turn require fewer game installations and even faster load times.
That being said I think all the multiple skews is going to confuse the consumer. They need to just make up their mind about what they want to do or wait longer periods of time before introducing new skews. And yes I realize that the 360 also has multiple skews. The difference though is that M$ has kept their skews the same from day 1 of introduction and each skew is upgradeable to the level of the highest skew.

3dpenguin... other than Sony, there are actually more than "4 companies" releasing Blu-ray players --

Pioneer
Panasonic
Philips
Onkyo
Sharp
Samsung
LG
JVC
(in 2008?)
...more forthcoming?

And as for whether any of these -might- produce stand-alone HD-DVD players one day [apart from the 'combo' units made by both LG and Samung], I still believe the primary factor in the "format war" that guides a company's decision is DISC SALES of the content, which has always been more favorable to Blu-ray in the weekly and annual sales reports. Well, either this factor, or perhaps the promotional co-ops/funds between various alliances.

Wow, all this makes me so happy to have a gaming computer! When it comes to the love of games, it is by far the best toy I've ever purchased. Much better than any game console on the market, and that's saying a lot because I do enjoy my game consoles.

I'm with you on that one, Tim. I gave up consoles long ago in preference to the more extreme Computer.

I bought the PS3 mainly for Blu-ray, but to see those next-gen games in action too (last console I owned was N64). I've got to say I'm way disappointed in it, or rather it's nothing near what I had expected all these years to bring.

I wish I would have just gone 3.2GHz Dual Core instead - I've still got a Phenom Quad 2.2GHz (not very extreme but quad) to put together, but even it's just sitting in it's box untouched after two months now. It's like I don't care anymore.

But yeah, consoles way suck.

Love Hendrix! does it matter how many companies are making Blu-ray player's or not? If Sony takes much more of the market share they wont want to play in the market anymore because they're already not showing much of a profit, if any, as it is, will they make HD DVD players, not likely, since Toshiba controls 80% of the market share over on that side, they'll either go combo or drop HD altogether. I count 7 companies who currently product a player capable of playing a Blu-ray disc, so since 1 of them, Sony, controls approximately 60% of the market now your talking about the other 6 fighting over 40% of the market, I'm surprised they are sticking around right now as it is, it would make matters even worse if Sony was to take another 10-20% of the market.

Im in IT.. actually enjoyed upgrading my pc frequenty.. ang playing my games on it for about 10 years... last system owned was snes. I hated consoles.

But that has changed. console cost only..I've spent less on gaming now, its easyer.. more players online to play with, more buddies i know to play with aswell.

PC gaming is dying. badly. barely anything good to play

I don't care much (actually, not at all) on the PS3 games. I bought mine for the blu ray player (as it's the only player out there with latest firmware & cell processor) well in-match, against the other standalone blu ray players. So I don't care much for the dualshock or the bigger hdd stomach, as well.

What I wished the would've done was LOWER the retail price of the 40gb, to $299, to make it MORE ACCESSIBLE to the average consumer.... and a 2nd blu ray player for my bedroom.

Well I'm a Movie Buff, then a Gamer... so it's a big deal for me. And I can see a few PS3 Exclusives I don't mind getting.
