Has anyone upconverted superbit dvds on thier HD DVD player? If so is there a difference in upconverted quality between the superbit and SD versions. I am asking because i do not have a 720p display yet and I was just wondering if I should buy non HD DVD movies in superbit for future upconversion?

Yes, but it's small and very incremental. Not like the dramatic difference going from standard DVD to HD. If you have the choice between double dipping now on the Superbit version, or waiting for the high-def version, wait IMO. This is especially true for regular DVDs with at least half-decent transfers that maybe will be released to HD within the next couple years.

FYI - SUPERBIT DVD (I own about 15 titles)

Note: obviously the SupberBit is encoded with the same 480p resolution as standard DVD, and may (or may not) be an improvement in the mastering. One title, The Fifth Element, was released twice in SuperBit (the latter having many SpEd extras).

The higher bit rate of SuperBit improves the visual quality, but still is not on a par with a high-quality hi-def disc release, not only in resolution, but the fact that most hi-def disc releases have much higher bit rates.

Spider-man 2 on hi-def Blu-ray is noticeably better looking than an upconverted Superbit edition, although the first movie is not that much improved. Note: the link above is to the N.American SuperBit releases. Last year Eddie pointed out that there were other region SuperBit titles outside of N.A. (and you would need a multi-region player to view these).

Perhaps others here will provide some additional comment.

yeah, the first two "jurassic park" movies were released as superbits by sony in asia, even though universal has general distribution rights for that series.

Yeah I have quite a few Superbits mostly because I was the fan of the DTS option. Actually you can pick a lot of them up for pretty cheap now that the Superbit line is discountinued. I got Bad Boys on Superbit for 3 dollars on Amazon.

As LH said they're obviously not as good as HD but usually they're an improvement over the regular edition in Audio and Video quality. I say Usually because some of the longer movies like "The Patriot" don't show that noticeable an improvement over the regular edition. However some of the ones I own are IMO much better then the orignal DVD release. I think SWAT looks markedly better on Superbit, of course this may just be due to the regular DVD having a sub par transfer.

Agreed with the above posters...
Superbit is worth buying if you can find the discs for really cheap, otherwise buy the HD versions. I see a bit of an improvement with the Superbit discs, but it's a pretty subjective thing. Theoretically the Superbit SD discs should look better than the regular SD discs due to the higher bit rate, but as others pointed out it's still 480 outout.

Found a few Superbits for 3 bucks at Big Lots. I got XXX, Crouching Tiger, and Gattaca, all 23.99 on Amazon.

Superbits do look amazing throught my XA2! I prefer them over BR and HD disks somedays. Half the loading time, and still look great. Most of them are in DTS ES which is still my favorite format to date, even with the invention of the newer uncompressed formats.

Sony's SuperBit transfers came out some years ago at a time when most studios were doing low-bit-rate transfers. In the last few years before the introduction of HD, however, studios like Warners and Buena Vista quietly started giving their regular issues a high-bit-rate treatment. Now, virturally all SD discs from WB and BV are in bit rates every bit as high as Sony's old Superbits.

And has been pointed out, the quality of the finished product is always dependent on the quality of the original print and digital master.
