Am I the only one who is amazed that Gangs of New York is nominated for Best Picture? It does not deserve that at all.

There seems to be a theme every year at the Oscars. This year it's all about honoring Martin Scorsese since he has never won an Oscar before.

All I can say is thank god Madonna was not nominated for her Bond song!

I am not a Madonna fan, but I thought that her song was the best thing about 'Die Another Day'. [:)] At any rate, I agree with Per's thoughts that 'Gangs of New York' doesn't deserve any of the big nominations (except for Daniel Day Lewis, who was weirdly awesome). The most embarassing thing about this year's nominations is that Oscar Night will turn into Miramax Night--some categories are flooded with Miramax nominees--and don't forget that the Weinstein brothers have executive producer credits for Peter Jackson's 'LOTR' trilogy.

Henning, relax--'LOTR 3' is already the front-runner for next year's awards.

At any rate, here are my final predictions on the eventual winners:

Picture: 'Chicago'

Director: Martin Scorsese, 'GONY'

Foreign Film: 'Hero', China (this is a dream selection...'Father Amaro' will probably win, though)

Animated Feature: 'Spirited Away'

Actor: Jack Nicholson, 'About Schmidt'

Actress: Nicole Kidman, 'The Hours' (she's a great actress, as seen in 'The Others'...plus, Hollywood has been kind to her ever since her divorce from Tom Cruise has made her look like the victim and him the bad guy in the public's eye)

Supporting Actor: Chris Cooper, 'Adaptation' ('Adaptation' has to win something, and Cooper won the Golden Globe, so...)

Supporting Actress: Catherine Zeta-Jones, 'Chicago' (a lock)

Original Screenplay: Todd Haynes, 'Far From Heaven' (like 'Adaptation', 'FFH' has to win something, and it'll be in this category)

Adapted Screenplay: David Hare, 'The Hours' (since 'The Hours' won't win Best Picture, it'll have to settle for a screenplay award)

Cinematography: 'Road to Perdition' (a send-off to Conrad L. Hall, who passed away recently)

Editing: 'Chicago' (this one usually matches up with Best Picture)

Score: 'Frida' (though not well-known to the general public, Elliot Goldenthal is a widely respected composer, previously nominated a couple of times)

Song: 'I Move On', 'Chicago' (well, it IS a musical...'Evita' took this category, too)

Costumes: 'GONY' ('GONY' will take home this and the next category so that the Academy can say that they didn't vote just for Scorsese)

Art Direction/Set Decoration: 'GONY'

Makeup: 'Frida' (no, 'The Time Machine' doesn't have a chance, lol)

Sound: 'The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers'

Sound Editing: 'Minority Report' (one nomination?!?)

Visual Effects: 'The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers'

It's all very odd that DDL dominated GONY because the movie is supposed to be about Amsterdam Vallon (DiCaprio). (shrugs)

Btw. I agree with Eddie, that Lewis was the best thing about GoNY. He totally dominated that movie.

I am dissapointed that Road to Perdition is not nominated for Best Picture. In my oppinion it should have been the big winner this year. However it certainly deserves to win for Best Score, Best Supporting Actor and Cinematography.

Damn! You like U2 also? This song is on their Best Of 1990-2000 CD. Together with Electrical Storm, these 2 new songs can easily be included in their last album.
