The only thing you can count on from the Academy is not voting for anything you want to win. They're too unpredictable to second-guess, but I can tell you which movies I personally enjoyed the most and which ones I think have the greatest artistic merit. So, here's my ordering of the five major categories.

BEST PICTURE:
The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers
The Pianist
Chicago
The Hours
Gangs of New York

BEST ACTOR:
Adrien Brody, The Pianist
Daniel Day-Lewis, Gangs of New York
Jack Nicholson, About Schmidt
Michael Caine, The Quiet American
Nicolas Cage, Adaptation

BEST ACTRESS:
Nicole Kidman, The Hours
Julianne Moore, Far from Heaven
Renee Zellweger, Chicago
Diane Lane, Unfaithful
Salma Hayek, Frida

BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR:
Paul Newman, Road to Perdition
Ed Harris, The Hours
Chris Cooper, Adaptation
Christopher Walken, Catch Me If You Can
John C. Reilly, Chicago

BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS:
Kathy Bates, About Schmidt
Julianne Moore, The Hours
Meryl Streep, Adaptation
Catherine Zeta-Jones, Chicago
Queen Latifah, Chicago

BEST DIRECTOR:
Roman Polanski, The Pianist
Stephen Daldry, The Hours
Rob Marshall, Chicago
Pedro Almodovar , Talk to Her
Martin Scorsese, Gangs of New York

I have yet to see a lot of the movies that are nominated, but so far I agree with John on Best Picture, supporting actor and supporting actress.

WARNING - SPOILERS AHEAD!!!!

Paul Newman is great in Road to Perdition. I just love the scene where Hanks takes out his bodyguards and Newman. That scene gets me every time. The music, the cinematography, the actors. Everything is perfect.

Also, Kathy Bates is perfectly cast for her role in About Schmidt.
