I finally had a chance to watch the HD DVD version of Top Gun last night. Freaking Awesome, all three subs fired up at that first launch scene, way cool. My chest was was virbrating from all the low end bass... Well worth the wait from Amazon! I compared right after with the DVD version, and there were no comparisons. The HD DVD outdid itself... The Hd player did a great job with it, but I have to hand it to Paramount, way to go!!! I never realized the Kelly McGillis was not overly that pretty. Maybe HD isn't great for all things lol.

Yeah... the only reason I haven't got the hi-def version yet, is I've seen this movie MANY TIMES now (LaserDisc, and SpEd Anamorphic DVD), and would only be interested if I could get it cheap ($10 or maybe in a BOGO offer). Unfortunately, I heard that none of the great DVD extras (and music videos) were included!

Missed opportunity for TOP GUN on HD-DVD - (HighDefDigest).

And hey Paramount, why no hi-def release of DAYS OF THUNDER? (the movie where Tom fell in love with Nicole offscreen). I hear the standard DVD is lame, without Anamorphic 16x9 enhancement! Glad I never bought it... but I do have the widescreen LaserDisc.

Hendrix they DID release Days of Thunder on disc...it was called Top Gun. I laughed my ass off when I first saw D.O.T....talk about a complete rip off of Top Gun.

I haven't seen either movie in quite sometime...but as you know the plots are pretty much identical:

1) Studdly dude has every guy's dream job - fighter pilot/race car driver
2) Dude is a hotshot rookie who breaks the rules and gets hot chick
3) Dude crashes (plane/racecar)
4) Dude struggles to come back...fights his 'internal demons'
5) Dude kicks ass and shoots down the enemy/ dude wins the big race.

Talk about milking a simple plot...with the same actor no less. I have only seen Days of Thunder once...but that was enough.

Top Gun on the other hand....one of my all time favorite movies from my teen years. I remember being 14 yrs old trying to buy one of those brown leather flight jackets with the cheesy fake flight patches lol.

Bosshog7... thanks for the comments and comparison, but also you misread what I posted, as I know DofT is out on DVD (non-anamorphic though), but I was wondering why no HI-DEF version yet? Paramount has seen fit to release all three M:Impossible films (starring Tom Cruise), but not DofT.

You failed to note a significant difference of the CAST between TOP GUN and DAYS OF THUNDER - the latter features Robert Duvall, Randy Quaid, Michael Rooker, Cary Elwes, Nicole Kidman, and John C Reilly.

While TOP GUN has Val Kilmer, Meg Ryan, Michael Ironside, Tom Skerritt, Kelly McGillis and Anthony Edwards, I find myself liking the acting/bantor in DAYS OF THUNDER more - especially it's photography (and color).

Note: both films were directed by TONY SCOTT (Ridley's brother).

Well, "fired" is not the right word. Actually, the Cruise/Wagner production company's annual 'retainer' contract (about $10+ million fee per year) was NOT renewed by Paramount. The deal had always allowed the studio to get "first look" at screenplay/production's ideas greenlighted by the C/W partnership. The studio chairman [Redstone] felt that Cruise's behavioral antics had cost it about another $100-$150 in worldwide grosses for M:I 3... and he wanted to end the relationship (for the time being), and go in other directions - like SHOOTER and BLADES OF GLORY, etc.

I always liked Days of Thunder more then Top Gun. I don't know why probably because I like Robert Duvall. The SD-DVD is lame, non-anamorphic widescreen and no extras except a trailer. I'd love to see a High def version just for the engine sounds and the colors of the cars.

Edit I just realized that last sentence made me sound like a six year old.

Not only that, but ever noticed how often in DofT that director Tony Scott has a sequence set around twilight, either early in the morning, or at the beginning of night (when the sun is setting). He obviously likes the 'contrast', and also a more reddish color-tone. TOP GUN didn't have the the stronger color choices that Scott made later for DofT.

And Tony Scott really pushed the envelope for colors and contrast a few years ago, with the release of the violent, "bounty hunter" action film DOMINO, starring Keira Knightley ('Pirates/Carribean' movies), Mickey Rourke, and Christopher Walken.

I'm also a fan of his 1998 thriller starring Will Smith, ENEMY OF THE STATE.

Yeah LH one of the reason I like Days of Thunder is the cars are actually dirty and oily like real race cars. They don't have that hollywood pristine look that you see in a lot of other racing movies. I think stuff like that and as you mentioned Scott's color palette would be well suited to a high def transfer.
