With all these talks regarding the expensive price tag of a Blu ray player (or a PS3) piling up tab, with A STARTING PRICE OF $400, I can't help but scratch my head... as to how I could bring myself to puke out $489 on my first JVC SUPER VHS player, back in the day... during 1994!
Having said that: How much did your FIRST VIDEO PLAYER SET YOU BACK? What was it, & when did you buy it?

My first video player was a Sony HF-V770 (as best I recall - it's in the garage but I don't feel like looking to see at the moment) VHS tape player. It ran about $650. I thought I was future-proofing as it had editing features, a jog shuttle dial thing and super high quality picture (which it did). I did not watch more than three movies on it (I wasn't a big VHS fan to begin with) which was "Star Trek: First Contact", a porno I bought from the store I worked at, and I forget the third movie.
I didn't get to record to much TV on it either. Biggest waste of money I ever spent (beside at the casino).
I've already got more use out of my HD DVD player ($294) and my PS3 ($428).
I'm glad I didn't get too involved in SD DVD. Most of what I have I won on the radio, or bought below $7 except for a few box sets. "The Matrix Trilogy" was my biggest setback there.

That's a very valid point which has been made before. My first VHS player was an NEC: I think it was $499. The same for my first CD player, a very early Sony around $500 also.
Yeah, they were BIG bucks in those days, but they were also finished products. They worked out of the box. There was no such things as upgrades in those days. When BD gets their hardware issues in order and their prices down, then I'll buy one. Not before. A person does get more frugal as they get older.

Heck, even my gradma upgraded her washing machine at least 4 times in her life - from washing board, to a roller type, to a front loader. Good grief, do you really believe there was a time in recent history when technological progress was at a perpectual standstill for ANY product?
Edit: And thank goodness for upgradeable firmware today. Used to be I had to literally throw out my old equipment every 2 years and replace the unit to get the new features.

My first Betamax was the one that weighed about 800 lbs. and loaded from the top. I believe it was well over a $1,000. My first DVD player was a Panasonic, around $500. But my second DVD player, and one I still use and that still works perfectly after eight years, is a Sony 7700 costing over $1,200.
Many of today's Blu-ray and HD DVD players are bargains.

The first DVD player we bought was in 2002, a $50 from BB. Then I bought the PS2 (which I used mostly to watch DVDs, yes, I did). My HD-A2 was $98 at Wal-Mart...as for the Beta/VHS, I don't remember,
...was too young...

When i was a kid, our first machine was a Betamax, and I believe that cost $600 if I am not mistaken, but it included a one year membership to the localvideo store, this was back when you had to pay to be a member.
Our First VHS was $399.00 I remember because my dad gaveme the cash to go out and buy it. I was the tech guru in the house.
First DVD player was $899.00
First HD-DVD player $299.00

The first DVD player my family got was a DVD/VHS combo. I believe we got it in 2000. Maybe early 2001. It was about $200. It's pretty funny since now you can get a good quality DVD player for about $20. Never owned a betamax player and I have no idea how expensive the VHS player was. I wasn't even born.

I remember I waited for DVD player prices to come down to $320 before I bought my first DVD player, and it seems like that happened in late1997, or mid 1998.
Wow, it's still astonishing to me to think of where we're at now, compared to 1996, at which time almost NO ONE knew what a DVD was!

I bought quite a few components over the last 27 years!
When VHS/Beta units were first produced in the market in the late 1970s, a high-school friend of mine's parents bought one of those HUGE Betamax VCRs (low-fi mono sound) that Sony had released (about $1000, just like the one John Puccio mentioned). It was 1980-81, the first time I had the chance to "watch" a movie (wow - on videotape!) outside of a theater. I don't remember the very first movie my friend "rented" (from an independent video store), but one I remember seeing around that time was TAXI DRIVER, etc. The A/V quality was (of course) nowhere near resembling what we can view today with discs.
So, by the summer/fall of 1982 (my senior year in high school), I'm looking at the VCRs at a local video store [Video Concepts in the local mall], and the prices have now come down some, but while I'm interested in watching movies/concerts at home, it's disappointing that these VCRs (VHS especially) don't have "hi-fi" sound yet, instead the audio is called "Linear" stereo (with Dolby B noise reduction), which is still "low-fi" in quality, without a strong dynamic range.
Then IT HAPPENS... I see a Sunday newspaper advertisement for a brand new $299 Pioneer LaserDisc player (model #VP-1000), being promoted and sold at my Houston-area PACIFIC STEREO (a national chain). I see the ad and am VERY INTRIGUED. A "laser videodisc" with true hi-fidelity stereo sound, from a major brand name, and much cheaper than a VCR and the high cost of VCR movies (priced between $70 to $125 - which is why so many people paid a membership fee to RENT VHS movies instead).
So, I went to the Pacific Stereo, and was shocked to see how incredible a demo looked of STAR WARS (just released in full-frame 4x3) with hi-fi audio (and CX noise reduction), and also concert discs from GROVER WASHINGTON JR, THE GRATEFUL DEAD, THE KNACK, KENNY LOGGINS "Alive" (great!) and several others. I GET HOOKED on buying a laser disc player, and bought the Pioneer unit. I'll never forget the first 3 movies I purchased on LD - STAR WARS, AIRPLANE!, and SLAP SHOT. Each was $29.95 each (the usual price), and LDs varied in price from a low of $19.95 to $39.95 for many years, until some of the larger SpEd Box Sets were produced.
(Most LDs I purchased were at stores like Sound Warehouse, Video Concepts (who also RENTED LDs for many years!), Audio-Video Plus, etc. And later I discovered the huge California LaserDisc seller, Ken Cranes (who I believe was owned at one time by Image Entertainment). KC is no longer in business, but most of you know that Image Entertainment is a very dedicated -smaller- distributor of many great DVDs, and is now getting into hi-def discs.
So, my very first "video" machine to own was not a high-priced videotape VCR, but a lower-priced $299 LaserDisc player. Unfortunately, these first generation Pioneer models, "gas powered" players, did not have long-lasting power, as mine "died" one day (with a slight odor) in 1985. By that time, I had purchased a few hundred movies/concerts on LD, and so needed another player.
Pioneer had just come out with their 3rd generation unit (and smaller size), the #LD-700, and it cost a whopping $799! I bought it, and loved it (it never died ever - later sold it about 9 years later), BUT it was made right before LDs added "digital" sound channels to discs (as previously it was analog stereo only). So, in 1990, I upgraded to another Pioneer player, and later a couple of more (with DD 5.1 capability), and to this day I have 3 working LDs players (and 2 non-working, including a lame Philips LD player that didn't last but just under 2 years - crap). I also owned a good Kenwood LD player, but sold it.
Over the years, I purchased a SuperBetaHiFi VCR ($499), several VHS Hi-Fi VCR's (between $199 to $399). I've owned two different SuperVHS VCRs - the first was a very deluxe JVC model that costs $899 (and allowed special audio dubbing of music being inputed, and the video didn't get erased). The one I have today, another JVC, cost $399 when I purchased it new at C.City in 1999, still works great, and I'm sad to hear recently that JVC is now discontinuing SuperVHS stand-alone units, but will still sell basic VHS VCR's that will offer quasi-playback of SuperVHS recorded videotapes (will play, but have the same 240 lines of resolution as basic VHS).
My first DVD player (1998) was a great-quality Panasonic unit (still works today - but I upgraded since it's maximum output is 480i thru S-Video). And I also own other DVD players (Sony of course), had a Pioneer too, but sold later to my brother. In July 2006 I bought a new Toshiba HD-A1 HD-DVD player (will never sell it!) - AND JOINED DVDTOWN AS A MESSAGE BOARD MEMBER, later adding a Sony Playstation 3 (from May 2007).
I've been a long-time LaserDisc supporter/owner, from 1982 until the format ended in 1999 (USA) and 2000 (Japan), having purchased many new/used/discounted LDs over many years (well over 2000 in my collection), and I still enjoy watching LD movies (many are Widescreen, and SpEd, some with DTS, some with DD, etc) and the many concert discs I have collected (some of which have never been re-released on DVD).
As much as I have benefited from DVD, HD-DVD, and now Blu-ray, my first and favorite "home video love" will always be the legacy LaserDisc format - who DEFINED the standard for all SpEd content we have today!

Now this is fun!
My family was one of the first in the neighborhood to own a General Electric VHS for $1000 back in 1982. Talk about a big old beast and the remote used a cord!
We all thought it was the shit at the time and loved it, but soon prices droped, and by the time I was able to by my own, they were around $80.
in 1998 I purchased my first DVD player, a Sony for a littel over $500. It lasted about three years before it finally stopped reading anything.

Oh, and when I said our first Betamax cost over $1,000, I forgot to say that my wife bought it for me for Christmas from a hi-fi dealer friend of ours who gave it to her at cost! But it played well and lasted a heck of a long time.

Back when I was about 10 years old, I remember a family gathering in our uncle's place, where the centerpiece was his newly-bought Betamax for $1500 (after proper $$$ conversion). That was a big deal, considering I was still living in one of the poorest 3rd world (asian) countries, back then.
I remember it vividly since none of the children were allowed to enter the house, since his BEER BUDDIES were watching porno flicks- while the women & children were singing "Happy Birthday" to one of his own kids, at the backyard! The porno playing on the tube (ironically, which anyone was able to peek from the open windows), was not such a big deal, as the idea that my now-dead-uncle -- owned THE MOST EXPENSIVE gadget in the whole block.
Now that's quality time with the bloodline.

mvckalel... you and your "anti-Sony", "anti-PS3" bias/phobia strikes again!
My Sony DVD players...
The first one ($230, from 2002-03), and I still use it, features a 5-disc changer (so you can load a combination of 5 DVDs and/or CDs - plenty of content to watch or listen to), has 480i output over component (no DVI or HDMI). ALSO features SACD playback capability (for my small SACD collection - remember the other recent thread?), and a headphone jack.
What's "cool" about this 5-disc unit, is that while 1 CD or DVD disc is playing, you can still open the tray (via remote or on the player), and add to -or- remove from any of the other 4 disc slots - very convenient.
The second one ($149, from August 2005), was my first "upconversion" player (720p or 1080i ouput), single disc unit, great slim build, excellent quality, and I use it regularly for most of my standard DVD playback, although occasionally I use my Toshiba A1 for it's great upconversion (for certain visual-entertaining movies). The Sony will also play CDs, and MP3 CDs, but not SACDs (and no headphone jack). I usually like to save my A1 for HD-DVD discs, and my PS3 strictly for Blu-ray.
And, SO THAT'S WHY! Quality units at a fair price. Sony is one of the leaders in DVD sales, don't you know?

Firstly , very good topic !!!
I got my first VHS when I was in high school. Back in 1987 it was Grundig VHS and it costed in that time over 1.500 DM or in today's money arround 750 EUR.
My first dvd player I got in 2000 and it costed arround 300 EUR. I still got that player, and works OK.
I am looking forward in HD players/Blu Ray to start coming in Europe !!!

Wrong guess on the coordinates. That's the drop point for Manila.
No $h!t on finding another FLIP on this board. Then again, where else would we congregate.... a fookin' Sharon Cuneta fansite! I leave that to the other half.

Back to the topic at hand:
I didn't have my 1st svhs until early 90's, but my VERY FIRST VHS player, was a 'ZENITH' brand (wow)- back in the days when Miami Vice TV series, was just pickin' up viewer expansion, and STEREO broadcast on tv programmings... was still unheard of. 400 bux.
I didn't get my very first DVD player until 2001-ish, for about $200. That's cheap during that time, and sure enough- died on me after a year of use. Sharp electronics don' make such good stuff... but I get what I paid for.
The one investment that I still have today, and still use, is my $450 Mitsubishi CRT TV. That 20-inch workhorse was purchased in 1988. To this day... it works like it just came out of the assembly line. I knew back then (from word of mouth) that Mitsubishi REALLY MADE GREAT crt TV's. I just didn't see it with my own eyes (metaphorically...sure) until this day- and counting.

No $h!t on finding another FLIP on this board. Then again, where else would we congregate.... a fookin' Sharon Cuneta fansite! I leave that to the other half.

I grew up with Phillipinos and they call themselves Flip all the time, even the girls. Wasn't a racial slur to any of us.
As for the topic at hand my Dad purchased a JVC VCR back in the day and it was a pretty good model. I remember it had the remote that you could attach to the front of the VCR so you wouldn't lose it, pretty cool actually. Anyway he paid between $400-$500 for it. The irony is I spent $20 for high quality blank VHS tapes! They did a great job too. Then I remember one day we saw the JVS Super VHS and we were both in awe. It looked so advanced and had a from loading panel with so many buttons! It cost around $600 I believe and we never ended up getting one but I remember watching the demo and it was a nice improvement over VHS.
I paid $500 for my first PS2 and I still have it to this day. I did have the Disc Read Error messages that the PS2's were famous for but I was able to fix it myself through an online tutorial someone made (thankfully) and I have not had an issue since.
Now my HD-A2 HD DVD player seems like such a bargain.

I have friends of African decent that call themselves the "n" word all the time too (actually the children I know of some friends), however others (including the parents themselves) find the term racially degrading and know something of its history and wish their children didn't refer to themselves using that name.
The correct term for an individual from the Philippines is Pinoy/Pinay - like in the song: "Pinoy Ako":
Pinoy ikaw ay pinoy
Ipakita sa mundo
Kung ano ang kaya mo
Ibang-iba ang pinoy
Wag kang matatakot
Ipagmalaki mo pinoy ako
Pinoy tayo
Somehow substituting the degrading acronym made up by American soldiers for "pinoy" not only takes away the spirit of the song (pinoy pride and identity), but I guarantee it would not go down good at the Cowboy Grill in Mabini. And it doesn't go down good in the local Philippine community where I live in Canada either. My wife finds it offensive, and I know of no adult here who wouldn't either scold, pinch, or slap a kid for using the term.
Although many young people of many ethnic identities feel that using racial slurs with one another is endearing, many do not. My wife and I and everyone I know fall into the later category.
Sorry to go off topic here, but I have low tolerance for racism and degrading racial slurs thrown around like it's "OK".

You need to simmer down on the LECTURE, Skyhawk. I'm a purebreed FILIPINO. Your so-called 'opinion' on the term, IS NEITHER OFFENSIVE... nor ANYTHING NEW!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flip_(slang)
The term 'FLIP' is not RACISM. I use it. My friends use it. THEIR FRIENDS USE IT. It has ZERO MEANING in contrast to the 'N' word that HAS GENERATIONS of slavery attached to it.
You BRAG A LOT ABOUT stuff in this message board. DON'T ASSUME YOU KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT THIS ONE.
You were NEITHER BORN, NOR EXPERIENCED HARDSHIP, from where I was born, like I did.
You just go there for your vacation.

Well Skyhawk I don't know where you grew up but I was raised right in downtown Toronto which is one of the most culturally diverse cities in the world, if not THE most diverse.
I personally would never call any of my black friends Niggah but they sometimes say that to each other. The Flip word for Phillippinos has never been an issue here for anyone so unless one of them finds it offensive I guess they will still say it from time to time. If they don't find it offensive I have no reason to and yes we are all adults.
Anyway moving on to something a little more uplifting...do any of you remember the original Beta and VHS VCR's have the little wheels inside to manually tune the channels? They didn't have digital converters built-in those days

This coming from the guy who doesn't know a single word of Tagalog.
And yes, although I don't live there anymore, we try and go back every year. I suggest you take a vacation there too, and see how long you last in Manila referring to everyone around you with your "endearing" American term.
Why can't you just accept that many find the term racially offensive and be respectful of people that do?

Well, that's what you think. You're on a NEED TO KNOW BASIS. You neither deserve my ethnic attention, nor my RESPECT on the subject. You have zero clue.
It's interesting how this thread, all of a sudden, extended.... due to your IGNORANCE on the term. It was not racism until YOU INSTIGATED IT AS ONE.
YOU WERE NEVER BORN THERE. YOU NEVER EXPERIENCED HARDSHIP THERE. I did, and spent most of my teenage years with my lower-class relatives.... WHILE YOU CONSIDER THE SPOT AS A VACATION RESORT!
You want to extend this 'conversation'? Let's both get out of this thread (to keep the topic relevant for others), & converse on a different site.
GROW UP.

xplaytendo, you have no clue to where I was born, nor what "hardships" I've been though. I do know I wasn't "spawned" anywhere.
Frankly I don't care what degrading racial terms you call others, but I'm free to express my displeasure when called them. You're allowed to be racist - America's a free country after all, di ba?. But the worst thing some people might call you is "Joe" if you ever did visit the Philippines. Head over to Filipino.ca and start posts referring to everyone as "F.L.I.P."s and see how long you last before getting axed. I'll enjoy the show.

I have a brother-in-law named Joe. I got other friends that was born in the Philippines named Joe. Apparently, you're TOO STUPID to realize that JOE could actually be a NAME of a person, that extend to other countries, like the Philippines. You've never experienced HARDSHIP or CLASSIFICATION in my country, like me & my relatives did. ALL YOU DID WAS GO THERE FOR YOUR VACATION! You just keep digging yourself a bigger hole.
Thank you for clarifying your BIGOTRY, but I doubt the rest of Canada has your narrow-minded view of the world. You're a sad individual.

Yeah
, I knew you were referring to the Philippines, when you wrote the above note (pg. 2), as here in America there was so much constant publicity about the Marcos dictatorship, and his wife's amazing over-indulgence in shoes.
Years ago, the Philippines was again in the news, by it's impressive computer-school students, and how one was responsible for a major computer virus, I think it as the "I Love U" one. I realized then that this country is on it's way back from the sufferings under Marcos. I read they elected another female president a few years ago too Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, and she's been doing a good job trying to improve the country's standing in the world.

I think our fitst VHS player was around $1500 and this was say in 1979 or so...Then my dad got a betamax shortly afterwards maybe a year or so, and that was like $800, I remember the thing had a wired remote!!! We also had this machine that played these movies that looked like big plastic album covers!!! Anyone remember that player??? I had Lord of the Rings (animated) on it and watched it all the time. Hell, in our den my dad had this projector type tv with a red/green/blue light on it, and it projected to a screen. I remember the first big screen we got musta weighed about 900 lbs and it looked like a big piece of furniture!!! Alas, those were the days.

The one I am talking about was NOT a laser disc guys, This was like 1981, I don't think laser disc was out yet. These were like big Cartridges that you put into the machine with some type of disc inside them that played with a stylus sorta like a record player. I must WIKI this now dammit!!!! I also remember the quality of the cartridges was OK, like not quite as good as beta, but better than VHS.

Well, LaserDisc began in 1978.
But, obviously, you are referring to CED "needle vision". Was similar to VHS resolution (about 250 lines), and RCA spent a bundle promoting it. By 1985-86, the company wrote off about $600-$700 MILLION in losses for CED, and dropped the format, since LaserDisc, and especially VHS, were much more popular (and profitable).

Oh NO! I've been a pround LaserDisc owner since 1982, and back then the LD "fans" easily saw the shortcomings of CED, and spoke against it constantly, always recommending the superior LaserDisc instead (425interlaced resolution, etc).

Yep dude, it WAS a CED, I thought the quality was better than vhs but then again in 1981 I was 12 years old so maybe did not have a great eye yet for that type of thing. Now that I am 38 I notice things better I guess, not sure why. I also hear better now.

FYI, if you've ever been to the Philippines (it's clear you haven't and you were caught in a lie), you would know that "Joe" is what American people are commonly called in the Philippines when you don't know their real name. It's roots lie in the "GI Joe" American soldier thing. Jimmy Hendrix even did a song about it called "Hey Joe", which is what many would refer to you as - if you ever visited.
Perhaps you should Google about the country first before attempted to pretend to know anything about it. Just a thought.

(but perhaps xplaytendo never actually spoke that particular dialect, and grew up in an English-speaking area?).
I've never been to the Philippines, but when I was young my dad had a personal friend who lived for a time in Quezon City, which I think is somewhere not far from Manila, but I could be mistaken.

Skyhawk bigot says:
What an IDIOT. The Filipino citizens don't go about running in pitchforks & torches, just because someone cried out 'JOE.' Again, YOUR NARROW MIND COULD NOT COMPREHEND that THOUSANDS OF FILIPINO CITIZENS have the name Joe, or called Joe (short for Joseph). Like myself, unlike you, are MATURE ENOUGH TO REALIZE THAT 'JOE' DOES NOT PARTAIN TO A CERTAIN OPPRESSION, which you are POORLY INSTIGATING AS A CASE.
The Filipino citizens are MATURE ENOUGH TO SEE THAT, INCLUDING MYSELF. You can't. YOU WON'T. YOUR IDIOT BRAIN is too stuck in your next visit TO WHERE I WAS BORN... FOR YOUR NEXT VACATION.
YOU WERE NEVER EVEN BORN THERE. You can't even comprehend the MINDSET OF A REGULAR FILIPINO CITIZEN. You barely cross THE BORDER FROM YOUR VACATION RESORT, BECAUSE YOU'RE SCARED TO GET MIXED WITH THE POOR PEOPLE.
ISA KANG HIPOKRITA.
The assumption is understandable, Hendrix... but I, unlike some BLOWHARD RETARD like Skyhawk, I don't go about BRAGGING about a SECOND LANGUAGE, just because THAT BLOWHARD happened to visit my country for their VACATION PLEASURE. Anyone can post Tagalog language on the message board, AND ASSUME they can speak it.
I don't do that for the sake of OTHER READERS unable to understand it, and I WON'T STOOP TO SKYHAWK'S IMMATURE LEVEL of ignorance AND BIGOTRY, when it comes to the matter. He wants me to prove that I can speak tagalog? He needs to earn my attention, more than just a banter of my dialect on the message board.
Skyhawk is a child. I will treat him as such, no matter how much HE PRETENDS TO KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT MY HERITAGE, INCLUDING WHAT HE ASSUMES HE KNOWS ABOUT ANYTHING HI DEF.

I even motivated you to Google a simple insult. You should listen and actually learn about the country if you're interested in it though. Guys there often refer to male Americans as "Joe", but there's no ill-intent in it. It's what you would call a "default" name used from Davao to Tuguegarao.
And no, of course you don't have to speak in Tagalog, nor did I suggest it. This is an English speaking board, which is why I provided an English translation of my Tagalog in the same post. But I left one little detail out of the story about how I got my first VHS for free in the English translation. You'll never know since I won't tell you because it's a bit weird.
Luckily there are no other Tagalog speakers here, or I'd be in big trouble!
