The DVD and Blu-ray will be released on the same day ... the HD DVD 3 weeks later.

and i hate the grain so far on the older bluray catalog titles.

More last minute LOVE from WB and HD DVD. Hmmm maybe they are feeling bad about their move LOL. I will be buying DH in HD DVD!!!

I noticed that most of the older titles on BR have been grainy. It's got to be the way the film is transcoded into digital video. Most of the rips I have seen were mpeg2. I don't see that same breakdown in HD DVD as often. hmmm...

This is why I want studios to do two different transfers for every movie they make instead of taking choice away from the consumer: One waxy DNR'ed transfer without a spot of grain - soft as silk. The other transfer a sharp, high-bit rate "grainy" transfer that looks like the film from whence it came.

That way we both would be happy.

Perhaps consumer education would help (as in the wide screen versus full screen DVD debate), but I find more and more people actually prefer the smooth look of a grain-free image, even if a certain amount of detail and depth is lost in the removal process. Oh well, at least a grain-free image is a heck of a lot easier to compress.

Seems like the HD DVD announcement was a mistake, here's what the Digital Bits as to say:

All five Dirty Harry films will also be available in Blu-ray disc (but not HD-DVD - this corrects an error in our original Tuesday post)
