Yes, Barack takes the Chesapeake Primary. What a candidate, I have never seen a candidate fill up arena after arena. Hillary Clinton is an excellent opponent should she win I think she would do an excellent job as well. Sen. McCain seems to have the GOP nomination. I am just so glad that the BUSH administration will be over soon.

As an aussie, i never used to pay that much attention to the american election process, just who won, but i have watched every primary/caucus so far, and i must say your candidates, adn the grandure of your process put ours to shame.......... but then we are a small country (population wise) lol
Personally i want Hillary to win, just cause i think american-australian relationships could be made stronger with her, but then we'd be more then willing to work with Obama..... especially Kevin Rudd, (our country feels better already, i felt so bad when John Howard slung that lowball at the Democrats, stating if they win its a win for the terrorists...... well..... we showed him what we thought lol)
Can't wait to see what happens...... just as long as you guys don't vote in another republican......... lol

The politics of HD DVD vs. Blu Ray please !!
This is not the Presidential politics forum, unless Obama finally endorses HD DVD, and Clinton is firmly in the Blu Ray camp.
I heard Bill Clinton had a few releases on Blu-Dress, but that format is evidently no longer supported.

Yes he is and I met him up in Sedona once. He's really a down to earth nice guy, a real gentleman and I'm not usually a Republican. The one thing I can say for this election year, I'll be pleased nomatter who wins.

Tim, I have seen so many political threads turn to arguments, to flame wars, to death threats.
There are many political forums on other sites to accommodate this, what part of www.DVDTOWN.com "where movies matter" does this fit??
Just trying to keep things a little more civil... Seriously, I don't want to argue those types of politics on a DVD movies forum.
PEACE !!!

No problem, Tony. I'm pleased you started a thread about something actually worthwhile. Politics can get heated, but a lot of fun and interesting to see other people's point of view. I'm very glad you stared this thread. Thank YOU my friend.

I wanted Ron Paul to become president (based on his strong convictions about excessive government spending, and constitutional issues), but now I lean to John McCain - a true American war-hero, who's provided much service, and has long-time experience.
Also, I firmly believe McCain will work and produce better results with the opposing party, than if Hillary or Obama were elected. But, if the Democrats win, I lean to Obama, because of his lack of 'baggage' (compared to the Clintons), and his superior education, ethics, and personality/convictions, compared to H.C. - as least from what I've read and heard about him so far.

Agreed Love! You'd think this idiot could figure that out! Even that being said, politics has a lot of impact on WHERE MOVIES MATTER! I mean really, how many films have we had in history that directly deal with politics in out current state of affairs? There are literally hundreds of films that are directly related to politics and certainly a big influence in Hollywood. Come to think of it, wasn't Regan an actor? Isn't Arnold the govenator of Caleefonia? LOL

Eddie, I don't think Ralph is running this time. Although... Michael Bloomberg (New York's mayor) has been rumored to be thinking about an independent run.
While Ralph's almost 100,000 votes in Florida (2000 election) hurt Gore's chances of winning that state (Bush won narrowly as we all know), Gore could have easily won the national election if he'd could have just won either his home state of Tennessee, or Clinton's (Arkansas) - but he lost both. And Bush won.
And contrary to what either of those guys ever said, the US government is going backrupt by too much wasteful spending. I'm worried about the future. But I think McCain would be the best choice.

For the record, it certainly wouldn't bother me if Ralph Nader could win the presidency, as he really cares about government wa$te, and not just empty promises.
Tim, you are so right, GOBS OF FILMS have direct and indirect political overtones, not just classics like All the President's Men. And I also like those political documentary films, whether true-life or not (Michael Moore propaganda - funny but most full of biased untruths)... although I hear SICKO is supposed to be more balanced (I'm going to rent it).

I would love to see the best of GOP candidates in the running, nominee McCain, and VP Dr. Ron Paul

well, the one thing I can say about SICKO is it does bring up points that concern us all, whether you're democrate or republican. What I see is how our current health care effects my parents. Medicare and social security are not enough, especially hundreds of dollars every month on a fixed income is very sick, and you'll see what I mean when you watch the movie. Unlike moores other films, this one hits a nerve that all of us can relate with. In fact, you'll probably walk away pissed as hell about our current system, I know I am!
The one thing I can say about our current candidates is they know they have to tackle the health care issue. If they can at least do a couple things to get changes made it will make me happy enough. Like Shrek said, "That'll do donkey . . . that'll do".

Eddie, I voted for Bush twice because I felt neither of his opponents were the best person for the office. However, I've been very disappointed in the broken promises Bush and other Republicans/Democrats have made about 'balancing' the budget, or controlling spending. Both sides are guilty, you know. That's why I wish Ron Paul could become president, but it's not going to happen.

Hmmm...Sicko made me laugh...that show was so full of misinformation it wasn't funny. I especially like how Moore made Canada out as some kind of shining beacon for public health care. Speaking as a resident of the Great White North I can tell you that the health care system up here while 'free' (forget about our sky high tax rates for a sec) is crumbling before our eyes.
Try waiting 6 months for a CAT scan or some other kind of 'minor' surgery....and you can forget about trying to find a family doctor....get on the waiting list....ahhhh free health care.

Ok, I suppose I should chime in here, since I haven't shyed away from the Poli threads in the past.
First off, Tim is right. We've discussed political issues here on the message boards in the past, and yes, it almost always gets heated, but it is almost always interesting, and might even get a few people THINKING! Especially if you've got such tunnel vision about the "format war", you've lost perspective on what's going on in the world around you.
Learn about the Blue and Red battle that is going to make significant impacts on more than just the "video" world.
I should preface my remarks by saying, I consider myself conservative, but, I've always been a "right person for the job" kind of voter, as well.
1. Hillary: Not in a million years! The woman strikes me as evil (as in the fru-its of the de-vil)
. She seems like she's out for revenge (against men, maybe?), and when she smiles, it looks like the most un-natural thing she's ever done in her life.
I'm all for a woman president some day, but NOT Hillary. I'll never vote for someone that gives me the chills from head to toe. In my personal opinion, if Hillary is elected by some strange twist of fate, she'll do far more damage to this country than good.
2. Barack: I'm not sure how I feel about the guy, precisely. I like a lot of his positions, though, I'm worried that he may not have enough experience to be the President of the United States. However, history has shown that experience isn't always needed for positions of immense importance. Some people find out they're great, once put in a position of great responsibility. I think Barack Obama could do a lot of good things for this country. I need more, unbiassed info. on Obama to have a firm opinion, however.
3. I was sorry to see Romney fall out, but, such were the cards. I think Romney could have done a LOT of good for this country, including healthcare. Maybe he'll run again some day?
4. I think McCain could very well be the best president we've seen in a long time. He was a P.O.W., he doesn't do things just because his party would do them that way, and doesn't back down from a fight. I don't like his positions on all things, especially border controll, but, you probably won't find a candidate that will be a perfect fit to every one of your views, either.

Bosshog I totally agree.
Our health care used to be great but we lost a lot of doctors to the U.S. and other countries years ago because they pay wasn't as good here. Now we have brutal wait times and the service isn't the greatest due in large part to the doctors being WAY overworked here.
I couple of months ago I took my son to Sick Kids Hospital in Toronto (one of the best childrens hospitals in the world) and I waited over 2 hours just to see someone. Then once my son had his first examination we waited somewhere else, THEN we were sent to another section of the hospital because there were just too many people waiting so the overflow were sent to see other doctors. It was bizarre to be honest and very eye opening. When we left the hospital it was 7 hours later.
Considering the taxes we pay here I honestly expected better but all things considered we do still have a great health care system. It has just been taking a beating lately and you can thank our politicians for that.
My rant of the day.

I've gotta say I'm less than thrilled how this is all shaking out, most of all that Mike Huckabee is still sticking around. I've said in in many other places, but the man is bat-shit crazy. Period.
Since John Edwards dropped out of the Democratic race and I feel Hillary is imploding before our very eyes, I'm on record as being an Obama guy. Opposes raising the federal debt limit, opposed the war in Iraq, yes on stem cell research, rejects constitutional ban on same sex marriage, rejects tax breaks on companies shipping job overseas, open about smoking cigs/pot, rejects abstinence only argument against AIDS.

Not too come off as the rude jerk, but if the election were held tomorrow and it was between McCain and Clinton, Clinton would win, if it was between McCain and Obama... McCain would win. I would love to see some diversity in the white house and political realms, but unfortuneately the rest of the country doesn't see it this way.
If Obama gets the nod, the republicans are going to focus on his religion, Muslim, and associate it with terrorism, then they will focus on his race, and I don't care what anyone says a majority of people will not be comfortable with a Black president. This countries racial tensions are still too high for any minorities to hold a major office like the presidency. It is a sad state of affairs, but it is true. You can't stop hatred and racism, and there is still a lot of it.
It would be nice to see the man in office, but I have one issue with him that extends beyond race and religion... His constant whining. I don't care that he is black and don't care he is muslim, not all muslims are terrorists it is our media who makes that way. However, when he was going back and forth with the clintons over promises and how Hillary forgave Bill for adultery the Clintons laid into him and his immediate response was to whine about how they countered back his attack. Then for a week after that all I heard was him crying about them picking on him when he started it. Now if this man is going to piss and moan over something like that how can he effectively lead a country. Bush gets lambasted in the media everyday and yet he just keeps doing his thing, the minute Obama gets hint of some bad press he whines about it.
I am usually pro Democrat, but I would never vote for him because of this alone. I want a president who can let remarks and comments slide of his/her back and keep focusing on his/her job.
Hillary isn't without baggage too, but the Clintons did do a great job of getting the country out of debt, and working again, under Bush it was squandered and inflation shot through the roof. Hillary will always have to answer the infidelity the question, but what gets me is that a country so hell bent on trying to forgive people, and trying to learn forgiveness will burn someone at the stake when they do forgive someone for wrong they did to them. I think Hillary was great for forgiving Bill, most women would have packed it in and left, but here someone did learn to forgive and the country hates her for it... why the double standard?
McCain... well he is too Pro-Bush that he would never get my vote. We have had 8 years of Republican rule and quite frankly I am tired of the Christian Conservatives having a say in politics and having their principals forced down my throat. McCain may be a war hero, but that doesn't mean anything. The war in Iraq is un-winnable and quite frankly he will do nothing to slow down the cost of oil, and would be in the same stale mate we have been in for 8 years. We need some fresh new blood.
So in that instance, if Bloomberg runs, he gets my vote. However, if Hillary wins the nomination I would rather put the Clintons back in office, because during their tenure this country was doing A OK and we had great relations with our internation neighbors.

I know polls are a dime a dozen, but Polling Report would seem to suggest McCain would beat Hillary (grated 1 percentage point) and Obama would beat McCain (4 percentage points). At least in the USA Today poll.
Simply, whether the nominee is Hillary or Obama, I've voting Democrat. There's not a reason-period-for me to support McCain or Huckabee. I'd prefer Obama, but I'll take Hillary if she comes out on top.

Djfunkmaster,
I don't think race is an issue, if it was than he would not have captured some of the southern states that's already had their primaries. His message does'nt get hidden behinde race issues. White, black, and hispanic are all flocking to his words. People want change, they are tired of the same old issues not getting resolved. They are tired of a president that only acts when it's too late. They want somebody that's proactive.

It may not be an issue now, but these are only primaries.
Anyone remember that guy in Tennesee, John Ford who was running for the Senate, nto one thing about his race came up until 2 weeks or so before the election when the replubican party ran an ad, claiming its approval by his opponent, showing a white girl talking about John Ford and saying something to the effect of "Call Me John."
There are many ways to skirt around race, but I am sorry to report that we lived in a fucked up world, and race always becomes an issue at some stage. You would think that people would get over it already, but this just isn't the case, and living close to DC I still see the racial differences everyday... it is sad, but true. I hope that it doesn't become an issue, it shouldn't be, but the world works in mysterious ways... and it only takes one ignoramus to set thing into motion.
Read that snopes article... and you must be naive if you think the republican party won't find a away to spin it in there favor. The fact he attended a school, although it may not be primairly muslim, is enough for some people to get scared and scream terrorist.

Try waiting 6 months for a CAT scan or some other kind of 'minor' surgery....and you can forget about trying to find a family doctor....get on the waiting list....ahhhh free health care.
Pfft . . . Yeah, as if it's all that different here. With HMOs and Insurance company's telling us what treatment's they will cover, the days of a family doctor are long gone. A friend of mine has gone through Thyroid Cancer and he, too, had to wait 6 months before he could get an MRI, so don't get the impression we have it made down here.

I agree with Tim, our healthcare system is just as bad. I had two angioplasties in 2006 and the insurance only wanted to pay for one saying the one in the main artery was not needed... Sure, the main artery not needing to be unblocked... what a bunch of wankers. Anyway, I took it to arbitration and won.
I have a PPO and it is no better than an HMO.

I'm all for a woman president some day, but NOT Hillary. I'll never vote for someone that gives me the chills from head to toe. In my personal opinion, if Hillary is elected by some strange twist of fate, she'll do far more damage to this country than good.

i agree that race will be a big issue in the general election--and not because obama is "black".
obama's mother was white. he was raised by his white relatives because his father wasn't really ever around. yet, the guy attends a church led by someone who frequently preaches black separatism.
what's going on here?
i'm still voting for nader. loverboy, jeb bush is waiting for your write-in vote.

Tony... funny about the [Mary] 'Carey' vs 'Bush' line.
Eddie, it's just not Jeb's "time"... yet.
And Eddie, check out the DVD of that new anti-Michael Moore film, MANUFACTURING DISSENT - and see how bad he was to Nader (if you haven't seen it already).

mmm.... the most i ever had to wait for an MRI here in aus is three days...... we have free-ish healthcare, we just pay the left over bits, which our health-insurance covers....
Not all of australia is the same, but if i'm sick, i get in to see a doctor that day, some rare instances, immediately, we still have our family doctor's in medical centre's so that helps. But even in emergency rooms at hospitals i've never had to wait longer then an hour.
Last year i had a really bad cough and the doctors couldn't work out what it was..... once they decided where to go from there i was sheduled for surgery the next day (fair enough it wasn't major, but i was still knocked out etc. and i had to travel 300 km's for it, but was reimburst for petrol money and accomodation before and after)
Our health care system does have its problems..... mainly just with elective surgery waiting lists, but if your sick, you get straight in........ and its soon to get better, with the south australian government planning to redevelope our many public hospitals, and building a new state of the art 'super hospital', complete with environmentally friendly architecture lol, as well as our countless private hospitals always being upgraded, and the federal government is also going to be taking more responsibility for health-care..... (not this years budget though, we need a 15 billion surplus to help curb inflation)

Hey kryjam91,
Boy, That all makes me wish I lived there! How can I become an Auzzie? lol
I love Australian's because I feel they have similarities with the US -- we were both booted from the UK and had to make the best of things. In my lifetime, I've partied with a few Auzzies and they are wonderful, fun spirited people. And yes, a couple of them I got to know can put my Jack Daniels consumption to shame! LOL
Even during Summer Olympics, if the US is doing crap, I always root on Australia! You guys rock in my book. Nice to have you around the DVDTOWN forms. I hope to see you stick around.
Tim.

Ron Paul Facts - Chuck Norris style facts about Dr. Ron Paul
Ron Paul invented Chuck Norris.
I just saved a bunch of money by switching to Ron Paul.
Ron Paul has no alarm clock, but instead wakes every morning to the
call of freedom.
Ron Paul doesn't cut taxes. He kills them with his bare hands.
Ron Paul's idea of Gun Control is both hands on the weapon.
Ron Paul can fly, but doesn't because its unconstitutional.
Ron Paul's motorcycle is powered by global warming
When Chuck Norris gets scared, he goes to Ron Paul.
Ron Paul is the only political virgin in the U.S. Congress he's never screwed America.
Ron Paul taught Spock the Vulcan Death Touch
****************
Hillary Clinton may be the only woman running for president, but it's also notable that Ron Paul is the only MAN running for president.

Tim... Oh I'm just joking with Eddie (as he's always trying to put on over on me).
Jeb probably, ok definitely would have been a better Prez than his brother, but it'll never happen of course.
I'm really hoping McCain wins - he easily has the most experience, and long history of service and patriotism to our country.

Obviously he has the most experience, he's like over 70
But it will be interesting to see a "Republican" win who is for gun control, climate change legislation, higher tobacco taxation, and opposes Bush's tax cuts.

mra,
My bad. The Vulcan Death Grip is in fact in TOS, "The Enterprise Incident" to be exact. It is entirely fictitious, though, a construct of Mr. Spock. The Vulcan Nerve Pinch, as it is named, is seen in multiple episodes being used by not only Mr. Spock and Vulcans, but also humans and Borg. (Granted, you could make a case that Picard's mind meld with Sarek made him "part" Vulcan...)

Jedi Solja,
I salute and admire every person that's given the ultimate sacrifice for this country (lived or died) answering the call of countries that want a democracy. Our families that we depart with everyday to ensure that the thought in the back of every terrorist mind that says, "We can only fight in shadows" stays that way. IMHO, our men and women who defend this country is our greatest natural resource and to sqwander (I hope I spelled that right) it, too have a cavalier attitiude about people's lives sends the wrong message. The objective of this administration is to right it's wrongs and I object to using our brave men and women to achieve this. So Jedi my gripe is not with you but with you're CAC.
