Henning, Just so you know I tried installing Firmware version 2.8 on my HD-A2 a couple of days ago (I had version 2.2 on it) and I got an error message. I got the initial prompt where it asks you if you wanna update and I clicked yes. A couple of minutes later I got an error message and I called Toshiba.

Basically had to power off the player, unplug the powercord for a minute, then plug the power cord back in and turn the player on. THANKFULLY it wasn't bricked and my player stayed on versions 2.2.

I have an open ticket with Toshiba and when I get home I can add a pic of the error message to this post. Just letting you guys know.

Really, that's weird. Are you on DSL or Cable? Mine downloaded the patch instantly. I'm on DSL. I know of customers that are having issues with Broadband Cable connections.

I just downloaded and installed the upgrade for my HD-A35 without any problems. It took a much shorter time than the last two, maybe about 15 minutes. This one was a little different it went right into the upgrade without asking the usual yes/no question(s) other then "do you want to install the version." I guess a little was lost in the translation there. I'm waiting for the one which will say..."this upgrade will enable the playback of BluRay disks..." That would be too funny. At least for some people.

Edit: I'm using a DSL connection and I burned the disk using Nero 6.3.

Reaggie, I downloaded the ISO image and burned it to disk. I thought maybe the disk was bad so I burned another copy and tried to install it but the same thing happened.

Could be an issue with my player or the firmware itself. Maybe there's a problem when updating an HD-A2 from 2.2 to 2.8? Or it may be a problem with the A2 in general.

???

I thought 2.8 came out a month ago. Not home so I can't check right now but are yall sure about the firmware #?

When I installed 2.8, i had major playback issues with 24hz on some movies only. people at the avs forum narrowed it down to mpeg4 movies and said that vc-1 movies played fine. With my set up I had to agree. Mostly transformers and various other paramount movies i had to set to 1080p 60hz whereas with all other movies, 24hz looks great. that's why i wouldn't be surprised if another firmware was coming out, but i was expecting 2.9.

edit: just checked avs. the threads for this firmware started Jan 22.

Via my Verizon FiOS 15/15Mbps connection, the download was instantaneous, the remainder of the player install took maybe another 10 minutes.

My HD-A30 and HD-A35 are up to date now at HD DVD Firmware Version 2.0.

If you wait 8 years, Sony might actually have Blu Ray Version 2.0 released to their BETA testers....

Thanks again to Sony Blu(BETA) Ray, glad that you are actually caring about the consumers for a change.

Why did you lose my defective PS3, I know it only cost $499 so I obviously have enough spare change to buy a few spares.

Forget about it, it's no big deal, 15 years later and I am still waiting for the firmware updates for my 8mm Camcorder.
I keep the faith, I know that you will be releasing those updates any day now, as always promised..

Someone help me here, I can't decide between the $499 Blu player and the $1499 Blu player.

More expensive is always better, right????

That's what Sony says, and they are now offering 7 free BD discs and 70 Virgins with the purchase of a Blu Ray player, who could pass up a 7 disc deal like that???

I only have to ask, What's a Virgin???, and what firmware version do I need to be able to play them????

If Sony thinks Blu is sooo far superior then HD, Why not let all the studios release both formats and Really let the consumer have a choice ???

The other studios aren't Sony 'slaves'. Nothing prevents them from being a dual-format supporter. They choose not too. Whether it's due to payoffs/promotional benefits, or the fact that Blu-ray mainly outsells HD-DVD, etc... those other studios have chosen Blu-ray.
