I´m a HighDef fan. In Portugal we still have crappy tv signal to watch on HDTV. Even PPV is SH*T. I Have a Upscalling DVD Player from Pioneer DV600Av that does some magic with my Sony KDL40". I have just bought a HTPC for the living room (HP D9180pt) it came with a Gforce 8800 GPU and a HDDVD player. they didn't have it with a dual player . I played a ripped version of casino Royal and transformers (for test porposses only) and they both look awsome.
I don't care for sony or toshiba, but I think this war is getting out of hand and the main issue is still there. If I want to watch movie A I have to get Player A if want to watch movie B then have to go for Player B. If I want a Player that will do Both, then I'll get ripped off with a player thats isn't the best on either. This is tacking to long to resolve. And the consumer payes the bill. I will feel sorry for those who got a HDDVD if it loosses and the same if this so called "War" turns against Sony.
Just had a funny Ideia, and do don't know if it is even possible, but it would be a cool trick from toshiba posting a firmware for current HDDVD players they would enable them to play BRay and with all the requists working. Just a ideia that jumped out....

We want the best looking picture the best sound and make it interesting to see...

HD DVD and Blu-ray have different laser diodes, so no firmware update would ever enable either machines to play each other's content.

Actually Blu-ray and HD DVD use exactly the same 405 nm blue-violet laser diodes. The main difference is that the numerical aperture of HD DVD for the lens is about the same as regular DVD, while Blu-ray's is different - thus requiring different hardware. Another thing that influences the hardware at the reading interface is Blu-ray's faster data transfer rate. So yeah, you're right that a firmware upgrade would never do it.

Doesn't the dual format player from LG have a single drive that plays both formats? That's what it looked like on the picture I saw anyway. :~)

I think the LG has different hardware for both inside but uses the same laser.

Samsung on the other hand uses Broadcom's SoC (System on Chip) to power their dual format players.

it came with a 500GB hd, i'm thinking of adding a 1TB internal HD in a couple of mounths. it still costs about 300€ now. i will change the hd dvd drive when the dust goes down in this format saga. Sony still has to convince me, (if) wining the next format isn't enough. For now I'll wait for Itunes movie rentals that are suppossed to arive in April/May to Europe.
