Please, will all of you who keep saying, "well at least I have a great upconverted DVD player" stop. I am not trying to get in an argument with anyone out there who thinks that the upconverted player is equal to HD. When you purchased your HD DVD player, did you purchase it for the HD DVD technology or the overated upconverted technology. Before I purchased my A2, I returned 3 different upconverted DVD players, and no they were not Venturas. I sall no major improvement in the picture quality. I own a Panasonic 42 inch LCD, so it was not my TV. No I bought my A2, because I was ROCKED by the amazing picture and sound that HD DVD had to offer. This may be your way of telling yourself that all is not lost, now that you got a player that is about to go away.
It is what it is, a HD DVD player and it is meant to play an HD DVD, not a SD DVD.

Wow
InvisibleBiker, I may not have agreed with any of your posts fully in the past (and I sure know you don't agree with mine!), but this was one of the best posts I've read lately on this forum PERIOD.

Not sure about others, but I wasn't saying that upconversion is just as good as high-definition. All I was saying was that for the times where you have a movie out there that isn't currently available in any form of high-definition -- good upconversion is important.
It's like winning second place at the beauty contest in Monopoly.

Don't need any persuading. I know upconversion isn't quite the same, but it still is important for titles that don't exist in high definition yet.

To me upconversion is like scanning a photograph: is in my computer, is a jpg file now, but is not a true digital picture. The same with DVD's: They are 1080i, they look and sound better than in S-DVD players, but they are not true high def.

Exactly. But I have hundreds of DVDs in my collection and I really would prefer buying new Blu-Ray titles that I haven't seen than double up on all my titles. Even with my HD DVDs, the only ones I purchased so far that I already had in standard DVD are Reservoir Dogs and Terminator 2.
That doesn't mean I won't consider doubling up on certain titles when switching over to Blu-Ray, because I'm sure I'd like to see things like Die Hard and The Rock in glorious 1080p. It's still nice to have good upconversion as an option though in the meantime.

Just let us die in peace. I have my reasons for not supporting BR, and it's a much better reason than supporting BR simply because it comes with a game console that some people are obsessed with. I may not be the smartest guy in town, but I know enough about technology to make a good decision. If you bought into BR and you got a PS3, well then, congratulations.
The PS3 is not perfect by any means. It has severe restrictions due to poor hardware design. When a developer complains about having issues with programming for the PS3, we get the usual "they are too lazy" remark. But I don't want to spoil anyone's Blu Karma, so...
Enjoy what you bought and let the rest of us enjoy what we bought. I'm not happy that I will not be getting more movies to buy for my preferred format. So critique if you will. SD is not good enough for me, normally. There are some few exceptions as some DVDs are encoded very well, but DVD will never be able to replace HD quality. My HD fun only lasted for about a month and a half, then the bad news just kept rolling in after the WB announcement. I think I have a right to be upset, and I also have a right to refuse to buy into BR because of this.

Upconverting DVD players are by no means as good as an HD DVD or a Blu-Ray in visual quality. But for 98% of the population, it is good enough. And that's why Blu-Ray will remain a niche market.
Remember, HD DVD and Blu-Ray COMBINED were only 2% of the total DVD sales. The rest was SD DVD's being bought for regular SD players and upconverting players. Until prices come down dramatically, as in where HD/SD DVD player/movie prices are today, Blu-Ray hasn't won anything.

Hey Hawk I appreciate that very much. I just try or I think I try to post threads that I truely believe in. I think you and the rest of the regs on here make this site what it is. A great site to come to for all the scoop. Even though we don't agree at times.

Spoonard, that might be true but I think a lot of people were buying DVDs because they weren't available in high definition currently. I know that I have. Plus the studios were holding back some of the titles because they were still unsure how the war was going to unfold. They didn't want to jump in full force if one format was going to flop.
Now that there is a clear winner, we can probably expect a lot more titles and a lot of the consumers that were waiting for the dust to settle can now jump in at their leisure.

Thanks for the congrats bro. You are only hurting yourself, and your eyes AND ears by not riding the BR bandwagon, just think of all you will miss out on because of being stubborn, or because "Sony is this, Sony is that"
The reason these dev's say the PS3 is hard to program on is because of the video memory, in that it dedicates it, instead of pooling it like the 360, which the PS3 is capable of WAY better things graphically then the 360, and just think of BR games how awesome they will be.So YES, these guys ARE lazy.
As far as up conversion, I hear the OPPO 98X's come REALLY close, and must be seen to be believed.
HD can only go up from here guys, so get on the bandwagon now, and enjoy the benefits of the quality video/audio that BR provides. No more sour grapes please, it is getting REALLY old. If you want to be a stickler for not supporting Sony and BR you are only depriving yourself of these benefits because of some unfounded vendetta you may be harboring for GOD know what reason.
