I guess Michael Bay could not wait for the Blu Ray release of his own film Transformers, and has now gone to the dark side.

He is now Plugging HD Downloads for Verizon's Fios Fiber Optic Internet service.

Does this mean the deathnell for ALL HD Optical Disc Formats???

Digital download will not be widespread for at least another 10 years. Regardless of the optical disc war going on, (not really HD war anymore) the internet connection war is still going strong. I'm not really sure of the numbers, but i bet dial up has anywhere from 30-50 percent of internet users, with dsl accounting for another 20-30 percent. Cable is really the only possibility for digital dl unless you are prepared to wait a week. Not only that, but i would assume (correctly i hope) that people like to have the cases and booklets and have tangible possessions like those.
In fact i am so sure about that last part, that i don't think digital download (for the consumer) will ever take up more than 20% of media sales, unless a) companies start coming up with reasonable prices for the consumer (which are rediculously similar to the actual media cost right now despite not having production costs) b) downloads are made available at stores, to provide for people without cable internet and c) producers come up with some way to replace the tangibility of the media with some kind of feature besides a cover picture.

Ok, not necessarily downloads.

I subscribe to Showtime, which is owned by Viacom, Which owns Paramount and Dreamworks.

That automatically signs me up for Showtime On-Demand as an added bonus.

Transformers in HD is a Showtime On-Demand choice.

Why buy the HDM if I can watch it all day and night for what I pay for just Showtime to begin with????

I do not like the idea of HD movie downloads/streaming on demand, because:

1) Watching a HD movie in this fashion requires two services to be up and running: electricity and some kind of data connection. In the event of a power outage, I'd have other things to worry about than watching a movie at home. But if the data connection screws up but electricity is fine, I want to have the option of watching movies I paid for. Sure, maybe the HD providers will allow you store you most recently paid movie, but...

2) It takes a lot of space to store Blu-Ray/HD-DVD equivalent files. Say 25GB per movie to make it simple. Even on a 1TB hard-drive you'd only be able to store approximately 40 movies at the maximum. That is, if the downloaded movies will play without some kind of authentication first (DRM?). Or if you can keep all your paid movies on the provider box harddrive.

I am just about tired of the digital download madness.

FIOS and other super high speed internet solutions wont be available in most areas for at least 10 years. Until a time comes when 90% of consumers have that level of access, you can forget studios moving that way. Possibly in some small scale, but they wont bet the farm on it.

I think people are forgetting that most people are in no way tech savvy. This fact alone makes it harder digital downloads to permeate the market. Especially if there is a disk alternative available.

Too, I think there is some question about the stability of hard drives. Personally I wouldn't pay 20 bucks for a movie unless I am getting a hard copy. Current hard drives simply are not stable enough. Not to mention at 25-50gb per movie, space will become an issue. Possibly in the future, once solid state drives come down in price and expand greatly in size, this will be more feasible.

Personally, I think we will see something for HD movies similar to Itunes eventually. Where there will be movies for download, but you can still pickup a hard copy in stores.

Problem with that is you end up paying for movies you would never buy in the first place via the monthly fee. And secondly Transformers, or any title for that matter, will only be on demand for a set time. Eventually it wont be on there and you will have to buy it or rent it to watch it again.

No thanks imo. Its a nice solution for watching a movie over that you would rent and never buy, but for long term I prefer a hard copy.

Just a quick and simple question movie fans: Why does anybody give a serious rats-ass what this overblown a..hole has to say. What in God's green earth has he ever done to make people even care. I mean, really, he's the Paris Hilton of film making. He really thinks he's more important than he is!

No, this means Mihael Bay is a fully loaded JAG OFF. When he came out after Transformers was released on HD DVD, and said that it should have been Blu released because it was the better format. So now he has jumped ship like Jack Sparrow again. And you know why, all about the almighty dollar.

Bingo! And the said thing is it's his search for the almighty dollar. I googled his Hollywood history and I don't see where his opinions should pull any weight. Now, if somebody of Spielberg's caliber is doing the talking, I'll listen. He's got a history of quality films behind his name. Bay=Who the hell cares. Just another Hollywood bigmouth trying to make a name by finding a bandwagon to jump on.
