How is this good news? Unless you take pleasure from someone else's failures, this is not a good thing for those of us who want a top quality product at an afforable price. Which is supposedly everyone here. Although, I beginning to suspect, more and more "movie fans" here are really just PS3 fan boys who are a still upset that their gaming console of choice has been religated to 3rd out of the 3. Facts are facts, and it is clear the format war has pushed both sides to try to make the product better and cheaper. And since Blu-Ray is NOT better or cheaper yet, why would you want to pay more for less. Unless you just want to be "right". Okay, so here it goes. You are SOOO smart that you bought your PS3 for $600 a years ago, and now you can have more $30 movies to play in your gaming machine. Is that what you wanted to hear. Yeah, I'm the real "loser" (as many of the Blu_Ray fan boys have called those who decided on HD_DVD) here, for buying my $150 HD-DVD player and 20 HD movies which cost me about $300. And guess what, I'll still keep buying as many HD-DVD's as I can and when Blu-Ray finally becomes reasonable I will start to purchase Blu-Ray. I'm not on either side, I'm on the consumers side. I'm betting most of the Blu_ray supports here are younger than 25, as proven in the maturity level of the posts I have read. When you get a little older you'll realize how unimpotant it was for you to be"right" on this message board.

fe toad,
Step away from the ledge!
Seriously though, I am a blu ray supporter not die hard, but I would say avid. I know it sucks to lose out on anything and I can certainly understand your frustration.
That said, this format war needed to end. And yea, maybe the more "complete" format has lost. Everyone involved will be better off once we have one format and competition begins internally for consumers dollars. This will drive the prices down and the quality up. Also, Now that all the studios will back BR you can bet that Sony will have to get it together. And they will.
Oh and I paid 499 for my ps3 )

Absolutely. This forum has become nothing more than an adolescent "I'm better then you" school yard slug fest. Not much of substance is going on here any more. Most of the older more objective posters have bailed out and, quite frankly, these posts have become very boring and irrelevant. We know what's going on boys you don't have to keep hammering in the nails. Grow up.

Good news= FINALLY AN END to the format war.
I paid $399 for my PS3. I used the $350 i got refunded when I sent my A35 back on Jan 5. The day after the WB Announcement. Some people were in denial and didn't read the writing on the wall on Jan 4. Too bad.

Some people already knew what might happen before they purchased anything, but did it anyway. As I would still do. Hopefully, there will be blow out sales on HD-DVD, and while you Blu-Ray guys are paying $30 a movie I'll pay $5 - $10 for the same thing. HD is HD. So my HD-DVD player will be "obsolete" within the year, but so will your gaming system within the next 2. But at least my players quality will last me, I hope you can say the same thing for your PoS3.

My ps3 is just fine thanks. And apparently they are creating a 299 version as well. Due out sometime this spring. May pick up a second if that price break is accurate.

No sour grapes here. Good for all you guys who overpaid for the same (or lesser) quality product and "won". No big deal for me, as I said earlier, I'll just wait for Blu-Ray to become reasonable and in the mean time enjoy my HD-DVD player. Until Lord of the Rings or Star Wars, maybe I Am Legend (scheduled to come out on HD-DVD in April) come out , there are no "must have" movies I want on Blu-Ray. I already have The Matrix on HD-DVD.
Hey maybe I can get one of those discounted PS3's ,when they come out.

Bowfiend - Good topic but you posted it in poor taste. I think people understood that Blu-ray was going to win. Good news = one format, isn't really good news. You have no idea how it's going to affect the format for another 6 months at least. Also your talking about a format. You should read the USA today and take a look at something that really matters. Good news = Kosovo makes historic declaration of independence. But I guess the world needs to people to worry about the stuff that really doesn't matter as well.

No, they don't. But as long as this stupid format war (ie HD-DVD hanging around on it's death-bed) the longer it takes for movies to be released on blu and stalls the mainstream adoption of the home video market in High Def.
So, like it or not. HD-DVD is D E A D! It hangs around like a cancer impeding the advancement of unification towards a single Hi Def home medium.

Yes I bought a HD-DVD player. The A35. But on January 4th, that changed. I sent back the A35 and sold all my movies (7 or 8 of them) on Half.com. I bought a PS3 the following weekend.
I was just smart enough to get out before the floor fell out (as it is right now). Those of you who stuck with a sinking ship I say congrats captain. Enjoy your HD-DVBetamax in the years to come.

You compared HD-DVD to cancer? What are you like twelve? Seriously it's a movie on disc. I think everyone agrees with you that Blu Ray won and were happy you feel like you made the right decision. It's decision that was only a few hundred bucks. What's it really matter.
You are making yourself look more foolish everytime you speak. Any Blu backers agree with me?

Because the economies of scale and the barriers to entry should soon help push prices down, I guess I am okay with one format, even if that means Blu Ray.
But, I do think the wording in your title was a little too "Nyah, nyah, HA HA" to be in good taste.
Can I suggest Blu fans be a touch more gracious?

I guess some people are too immature to understand the difference between speaking figuratively and literally. Perhaps you need to go back to remedial reading and remedial English class at your local junior college to find out that words are not always literal.
For you two short-bus taking individuals:
fig•ur•a•tive
–adjective
1. of the nature of or involving a figure of speech, esp. a metaphor metaphorical not literal: a figurative expression.
lit•er•al•ly
–adverb
1. in the literal or strict sense: What does the word mean literally?
Get a life and stop being a bunch of neanderthals --- o wait for you remedial learners –
Ne•an•der•thal
–noun
(often lowercase ) Informal.
a. an unenlightened or ignorant person barbarian.

You know, I didnt know this was an actual war. Like, people are having victory parties over it. These are corporations, they don't care about us, why do we care who succeeds? OMG, I PICKED TEH WINNARH! I'M THE BESTEST! Congrats. You won the right to....um, buy stuff? I never got it.

I thought there was "NO PERSONAL ATTACKS. Discuss the content of a post. Do not attack the poster. This includes name-calling." I guess that doesn't apply if you're a "winner". Bowfiend you just keep hiding behind your computer and calling people idiots and losers. I'm glad that you have at least one outlet in life where you can feel superior.

Bowfiend - Once again your post and comeback is so enlightning. You do such a good job at making Blu supporters look foolish. It is funny how you're so courageous to post personal attacks against people on a message board for their constructive criticism on your posts.
Also nice of you to bash people that have to ride the short bus. Let's make fun of kids who were born into this world with less chance of succeding then the average person. One can only hope you never have a special needs child in your family. But if you did I guess some would just call it karma. (FYI- I have no kids, but I'm intelligent enough to know that what you wrote makes you look extremely stupid and childish.) Then again I'm not sure why I'm wasting my time with this as everyone else on this post is bashing you for being a loser as well.
Don't you have some City of Heroes to play? Than you can quit wasting peoples time that actually have constructive and worthwhile things to say on these boards.

The problem with gloating is that it makes you look like an immature brat to the other side, and an embarrassing ass to your own kind (in this case, fellow blu-ray fans). So while you have some fun with it, when it's all over, no one likes you anymore.

This is good news? I'll be ready to embrace good news when it's news about BR players going down in price (with profile 2.0) and the movies are affordable to boot. How about good news that benefits everyone, not just news that makes PS3 gamerz feel all warm and fuzzy because they killed of a cheaper alternative.
Are you expecting your BR prize in the mail? (A little Chris Rock humor there).

We all know and are waiting until tomorrow, when I am sure Toshiba will make an official announcement about what they are going to do. So can we stop with the threads like this one, we already know.

Bowfiend, you really need to grow up. Your posts and comments are immature, childish and borderline antagonistic. Who cares who wins the format war? There are other things in life to focus on besides movies and discs. Try some other hobbies for a change and you will become a more well-rounded person. And I hate to tell you this dude but unless you have a time machine and have seen the future having one format won't necessarily speed up mainstream adoption. Nothing in life is guaranteed except "death" and "taxes". Only God can help you deal with the former and you'll need a cpa to deal with the latter.

I have to laugh. Blu Ray movies are affordable. Just don't buy RETAIL. J&R has movies for $11.99 and $15.99. I buy most BR movies on half.com and amazon.com shops. I got Spiderman Trilogy for $28.00 delivered, and Cars for $16.50 delivered. I bought all my Harry Potter BR movies (1-4 for $9.98 EACH $[19.99 BOGOFREE]) Harry Potter 5 for $17 Delivered.
So to say that they are not affordable, you may be right. The places that you are shopping is wrong.
As far as me, whatever. I don't need to explain myself to any of you.

Wired is reporting that the NHK Japan article about Toshiba ceasing HD-DVD equipment manufacturing has been confirmed by Reuters. This is the first mention of confirmation I've seen. It certainly appears that tomorrow is probably the big day for Toshiba’s official announcement.

Hey Bowfriend
Where can I get those BOGO free Blu-Ray movies? It sounds like such a great deal. Please post the links. Of course, your response should be that we'll never see such deals again because Sony won't need to lower their cost to compete against HD DVD.
Without HD DVD and XBOX 360, you wouldn't have got your PS3 as cheap and those cheap Blu-Ray movies you bought would be about $10-$15 more expensive.
For that fact alone, you shouldn't be celebrating Sony's glorious victory over HD DVD.

Actually HD DVD is a WAY bigger failure then BetaMAX. BetaMAX was used for a very long time behind the scenes by TV/News studios so Sony was able to basically get their money back out. HD DVD was just a flat out loss for Toshiba.
In case you are confused or just slow: Yes you wasted your money on HD DVD and yes it is dead. Most of you QQ don't want to admit it, but you know you did.

well sony fan boys are annoying! thats reason enough not to go blu ray. Lol i do own a ps3(bought one recently) and it is what it is....A blu ray player. I will have to say that post on here from sony/ps3 fanboys have turned me off from this site, i first came here to learn about the hd format. Didnt realy come here to read verbal bashing, just cause some 5 yr olds wanna be right. But there are supporters on both sides that relay alot of helpful info. It seems that blu ray is the winner so maybe some people can chill out. I own both formats and enjoy movies, not one format over another

Its kind of their job to report the news, not yours. Threads like this get started for no reason but to brag and I really don't understand why people are bragging. Yes we know Toshiba failed and made wrong decisions the whole way, dooming their format. Do I need a bunch of tools telling me I made a mistake? No.

Why don't you get a job with one of them, then you can feel really important. And I think they do a little more than report "news". Much of what they write is pure speculation or opinion.

I think you missed it when I said:
What makes you think I’m upset about Blu winning? Didn’t you see my post where I said:
I agree with you that some people struggle with the fact that HD DVD lost. However I’m not one of them due to my investment in HD DVD being under $200.
Once again. I don’t mind the post as it is a good article to read. I just think your delivery was in very poor taste. I know you have great skills using a dictionary so you might want to look up the word tact. I think your posts would be more welcomed and wanted by people on this forum if you didn’t post them with such malice.
I think you’re under the impression I’m attacking you. In reality, I’m just trying to help you out as your posts tend to aggravate the other users on this board, which I don’t think really benefits the messageboard at all.
I do appreciate you sharing the article though. I think it’s more than fair to say that announcement from Toshiba should be coming this week.

I think everyone agrees with you that Blu Ray won and were happy you feel like you made the right decision. It's decision that was only a few hundred bucks. What's it really matter.

Thanks. You're right. I originally posted that sarcastically, but it blew way out of proportion.
(btw I was very upset when WB made their move, but I reacted and opted out on 1/5)

I bought most of my HD-DVD titles at $15 or less. Some at $18 and just one at $32 (hey, it was my first HD movie). I'm just wondering where NPD gets there numbers from, since they say they don't count Amazon, there must be a lot of people out there spending good money on BR movies.
BR titles were really no more expensive than HD-DVD ones, but I do believe that there won't be as many BOGOs as before.
As I have stated before, I don't care about which company makes which product, I judge price and quality for the dollar. HD-DVD wins, hands down. I know that nobody is forcing me to buy BR, but I do believe that HD lovers (such as myself) are being given only one option when it comes to players, and that is the PS3. That is the major thing that has kept me from embracing the format.
Why am I hating on the PS3? Just go to the official PS3 forums and read about the different problems that ACTUAL PS3 owners are experiencing. Freezing, disc errors, flashing lights (RROD jr) - and these problems are erratic, so it doesn't matter how old your system is. So you've had no problems, you're PS3 is immune, right? Don't hold your breath. If you ever experience any problems with your PS3 (VideoCipher has already suffered this fate), you'll understand what I've been trying to avoid.
