I would like to know from all the Blu Ray fans out there, which Blu Ray player do you have at home?

Ps3.
I bought it for a game system and have gotten more use out of the blu ray capabilities. Not that ps3 doesnt have its fair share of good titles. They just werent out yet when I purchased mine heh.
At some point I will be buying a 2nd ps3 just to watch movies on. Especially if the rumored $299 ps3 hits the shelves this spring.

Have you had any problems with it playing any of the Blu titles?

I did need an occasional firmware update for my Philips to play certain titles, but I've been able to play most of the movies (roughly 98% of them) I put in it right off that bat. Sony is immensely better at releasing firmware updates then either Philips or Samsung. Unfortunately my Philips was designed by Samsung.

Well whatever shakes out in the carpet, I will defenitly go for a dual player. But I am going to wait until the 2.0 comes out and all the bugs are worked out.

I don't have one yet, but I am leaning towards the Panasonic 1.1 compatible player (I think it's the 30?) because the PlayStation just doesn't float my boat.

See hood I agree with exactly and thats what I wanted to see. How many Blu supporters are using a gaming system to watch their movies. Just think if XBOX would have built an internal HD DVD player, hmmmm wonder what would have happened.

I have thought a few times about buying a stand alone player. But why? The ps3 is the best one at this time. I have never had a title that wouldn't play and the updates are automatic as long as you have wireless.
Blu-ray didnt really feature in my decision to buy the ps3 initially. I saw that as an added bonus and even if blu didnt win out I would still have a game system. So no big loss there if HD had won. It would be like owning movies for the UMD format psp.
I will buy a standalone player when they finalize or complete the format. Until then I am sticking with ps3.

I'm not a "gamer" but I use a PS3. It was just the best choice at the time for my uses. Plus I enjoy the media center aspect of it, so I didn't have to go through with plans to build an expensive HTPC.

Doesn't matter Biker...it's a moot point. I agree that it would have been nice for XBOX to throw an HD player in with the system (possibly would have saved me from having to have bought another HDM player), but they didn't.
I've had an HD-A1 since they came out and really liked the ease at which I could upgrade it, and the issues with getting updates for Blu-ray standalones made me a little leery of purchasing one. Couldn't have cared less about not wanting to support Blu, would have been the same way if roles were reversed, If it went either way and I had to buy into the other format, I just wanted to be able to upgrade it easily.
So a few weeks back I went with a PS3. I wanted to go standalone with a player, but researching all the different profile issues, it seemed that the PS3 was the way to go. Yeah, its marketed as a game machine first and foremost, but so far it has done a great job for what I bought it for and that would be playing movies. What I really liked about it was that the upgrades are a snap. Just hook up the wi-fi, or load the info onto a memory stick, plug it in the PS3 and it basically does the rest. And, if I want to play a game, it can do that too. So, again, while I was an early HD supporter, I really could care less about who wins as long as the movies keep coming.

I'm about 75% movies and 25% games and the games are sports games so it really did'nt bother me that the system is lacking in the game department as long as EA, 2Ksports, and others produced sports games. The ease of receiving updates is so painless that it should be a standard for the standalone models. No Blu ray or HDDVD player has WiFi, and the Blue Tooth remote is a much better idea than an IR remote. Especially if your HT equipment is located in the rear of your HT room. You could be on the moon and it still operates your PS3.
Now of course when the Panny BD50 hits the market I'll throw a farewell to playing movies party for my PS3 but until then. I think it's the best Blu ray player on the market,

You gotta let go of those stigmas related to consoles of yore when you think about the PS3. That machine is a work of art. And it's also state of the art. You cannot think of it in terms of being just a gaming console. The PS3 is about as future proof a machine as you'll see in the CE world nowadays. It's super elegant, has solid construction, plays Blu-rays, plays PS3 games, streams media from your PC, has built-in wireless adapter, you can surf the web, it also has memory card reader, upgradeable hard drive and of course the cell processor. It's got the fastest loading drive of any Blu-ray players, and it has automatic firmware updates if you have it set up that way. The only things you can gripe about is the lack of infrared controller (blue tooth only) and that it doesn't resemble "normal" AV equipment. That is it.

Sony has looked for this "synergy" machine for years. The PS2 was the first stab at it. They WANT to own your living room, honestly, and its easier to make an all inclusive device so they comandeer more items with it. They get a media center, your game station, your movie player, and possibly your VoD service. All they need is you to get a sound system and TV and they've got you covered.
Im not making a judgement on this tactic, but it is something they've always attempted.
I have a PS3, and when that breaks down in two years, most Blu players should be able to play all disks without hassle and I'll get whatever gets me the best bang for my buck.

Well that Xbox 360 was going for the same thing, minus the built-in high-def player.

So when average joe consumer walks into wally world and buys the Samsung player, not realizing that this machine will not play Blu ray discs properly, we should tell him that after he spent that all that money on this player he should have went with the PS3.
It disguises itself as a gaming console but it can do soooo much more. What if average joe doesn't play video games and just wants to watch a movie. This should be fun to watch. I am grabbing some awesome deals with HD DVD movies and will sit and watch for a long time before I even consider buying Blu Ray. Reliability, price, and getting everyone on the same page (sony makes a blu ray player, gaming console, ethernet connection, etc and no one else can make a standalone player that does this?) will all have to come together before a purchase is made.

See now thats the responses I was looking for from both Blu Ray and HD DVD supporters. Now if the PS3 would feature a dual player (PS4 LOL), then I would highly consider it. So I will wait for a dual player that fits the budget and hope it plays well.

Then don't play video games just use it as a player. I don't understand why people have such a hard time with this. They act like SONY said you must play at least one hour of games a day in order for the machine to work.

Tony I don't know, maybe it is a psychological thing to me. I really just want a good dual player so I don't have to hook up 2 different players. And besides my TV only has 2 hdmi hook ups, and it is a great TV. I am not in the market for a new TV yet, so I guess I will have to wait. Do they make an HDMI splitter, that might do the trick?

IB, My 1080p DLP has only two inputs. The problem with some HDMI switchers/splitters is compatibility. Ok, you buy the switcher/splitter and later on you decide that you want one of the ONKYO recievers, you may run into some compatibility issues. This problem has surfaced in alot of cases because there are different variations of the HDMI spec. If you do decide to get an HDMI switcher/splitter make sure that it is spec 1.3a which is the latest spec and backward compatible.

true, but MS doesnt make TVs and receivers so they can't own your whole entertainment system. The box-whichever it is-is just the way they control the flow in of your media. They both want this.
Anyway....Tony, I think part of the fear of using a PS3 as THE blu ray player is how long will it hold up. I can google plenty of links about the failure of the PS2 as primary DVD player as it wasn't designed properly for that. Fool us once, shame on Sony. I don't think some of us want to be fooled twice.

I won't even touch that whole thing about "but MS doesn't make TV's and receivers, so they can't own your whole entertainment system". I can't even begin to fathom what sort of issues you're having with that.
Also, there shouldn't be any "fears" about using the PS3 as a primary player. Don't compare the PS2's DVD playback issues with the PS3's ability to be a solid, long-term player of Blu-rays. It is like comparing apples to oranges. Remember, it's not the PS3 that's having the "Red Rings of Death" problems.

First off, the average Joe will never buy into a $400+ player technology because it is way too expensive for him, and even if he did have the money for it, he would probably view it as an unnecessary upgrade over his already impressive looking DVD's. And second, you just don't seem to get what the PS3 is all about, so there is no use reasoning with you about it. Haters of Sony will always be too blind to see what great potential a system like the PS3 has anyway.

I have a PS3, there is just 0 reason to buy anything else. BD 1.1 support, future 2.0 support guaranteed, and fast boot up times. Even if you never play 1 game on it, the music/video streaming from your PC and web browser make it better then any BD out.
Also the fact that it has wireless built in is a bonus for a lot of people who don't want or have broadband in the living room.
