This is for anyone who is Blu supportive, which Blu stand alone player is tops. And I am fully aware of the PS3 and all that it does. But I want a player, not a gaming machine. So which is it guys, help a brother out. LOL

Don't overlook the forthcoming (summer, I think) new SONY SAPPHIRE Blu-ray players, as I mentioned on Pg 4 of this thread (another msgbd member posted a pic). Profile 2.0... (but some people here don't want to buy their BD player from $ONY)

Hendrix do you know how much these new Sony players will be?

How much are these Panasonics BD30's and 50's? I can't imagine they would charge the same as a $400 PS3.

The Panny BD30 is on sale at AMAZON for $420. The BD50's price has not been made public.

EDIT: Well it was on sale for $427 now it's $445. I think because it's a popular unit that it went up in price.

Sorry Falcon, I don't have any pricing info on those forthcoming Sony Sapphire Blu-ray players - we'll just have to wait for the press release (probably within a month or two on EngadgetHD.com, or an A/V mag - I subscribe to several).

Yeah, I noticed that BD player prices have been creeping up a little the last few days, over at ebay as well. Guess that's the first sign the war is over.

What Panny player will be replacing the BD30, or will it be carried in addition to the BD30? There are lots of HD DVD owners who want a bonafide SAL player 1.1 or above, and don't want to pay an arm and a leg for it. Under $300 1.1 players are a must, and soon. Otherwise lets get the friggin' war running again until Blu-ray is ready both price and spec-wise and thus worthy of the W.

See thats the problem with SONY, why do they have to charge so flippin much for the stand alone players? We know how much of a mark up there is on electronics. If they could drop the price to say 200.00, I think they would sale the hell out of the stand alone players.
Here is another question, my TV is 1080i, will I still be ok with the second gen models (1080p24 & 1080p) ?

IB...LOL - give 'em some time - surely by Xmas some stand-alones will be under $250 (my opinion).

Regarding the 1080p/24 discs, to my knowledge all hi-def players ever released allows you to set the output as follows -

480p/60hz ('down conversion' of HD discs) also for DVD output

720p/60hz

1080i/60hz

1080p/60hz

and 1080p/24hz (select models - REQUIRES a new HDTV that specifically has a viewing option setting for this signal output, otherwise even though you can 'select' this from the player, most 1080p TVs will actually convert the signal to 1080p/60hz for viewing).

Don't worry - the players are fully compatiable with the different HDTVs. Use HDMI whenever possible (superior image, and required for upconverting standard DVD signals).

Oh I am HDMI hooked up no doubt, I just wanted to make sure if I do purchase a Blu Ray down the road, and it says 1080p I will atill be ok due to the fact that my Panasonic is 1080i.
Thanks JIMI for the information.

Can you tell me about OPPO DV-980H ?
