Yeah I doubt the average person understand why it's called blu ray, but I'm sure they understand that its a hi def movie disc format. They probably just figure the name makes no sense just like betamax.

Why, did the average person know that VHS stood for Video Home System and the DVD stood for Digital Versatile/Video Disc? I doubt it. As long as they know what's associated with the moniker that's all that matters.
