Well, that should be after midnite here.
Sorry to all those who were hoping to start their HD Trek collection on HD DVD too, as another story says that's stopped (I have no idea how dependable that site is anyway) but if it's true I hadn't intended on buying it anyway until the whole series, if ever, were to come in a less expensive HD-only version.
Personally, I think combo disks also contributed to the death of HD DVD.

With regards to the bits:
They've been around for a really long time (I remember going their for DVD vs. Divx). They have been blu for a while and they state their reasons why. Bill Hunt the (the editor) as far as I can tell seems to be pretty accurate when it comes to un-reported information.
Again, nothing is anything until its officially been stated.

Indeed ReaggieP, Indeed
And at this conference Toshiba will announce that they just finished up the details on paying FOX and DISNEY to join HD DVD, lol. I can dream anyway, haha.

You don't think that the fewer sales of combo disks contributed to manufacturer support declining?
I know it was multiple factors, but I really do believe that the poor sales of combo disks was one piece of the larger picture that did it. Again, it's only my opinion.
Combo discs were never marketed the way they were supposed to be anyway. Take Warner's Harry Pooter combo that they say was supposed to be the same price as other non-combo HD DVDs (which I saw for five dollars more at Target today) they were never marketed to the DVD owners. The only people who knew about them were HD DVD owners who saw it as paying more for something they didn't really need. Sure not 100% of the people feel the same way about that, but I bet a vast majority do.
Advertisements, from Blu-ray as well as the lack of them from HD DVD, were probably some of the biggest factors. I never thought I'd buy another game console, but here I am with a PS3.
So many factors! I do wonder how the official statements will go.

The Digital bits editor Bill Hunt is a Fully Paid Blu Shill and has been for quite a long while, just take a brief review of his site and you will realize he has been Insanely Blu Biased from the start.
Don't take anything you read there as fair and honest.
At least here on DVDTOWN you get to hear the best and worst from ALL sides, "da' bits" censors anything that doesn't shine Blu.

Well, I just pre-ordered American Gangster, Beowolf and Jesse James on HD DVD. I had a rebate card from AT&T on my Blackberry, so that worked out well. From now on, however, on I'll be looking for HD DVD bargins and saving for a new Panasonic BD player.
And VC, you are right about Bill Hunt. He was shilling for BD in 2006 when I joined DVD Town. Unfortunately, he was right.
And, speaking of shills and trolls, hold on to you tighty whities tomorrow after the press conference. They will be flying!!

As if they weren't already.
The story will likely be up here in threads, several hours before it's officially posted as a headline - you know they've all got their coffee pots set to brew so they can be up all night!

I'm only sorry I won't get to see the press conference live. This isn't history changing news, but I tend to miss out on all the important "live" news for various reasons. Oh well, I'll be on at 8:30 tomorrow, probably to a full e-mail box.

I take some offense to this. I've visited Mr. Hunt's site for almost 10 years. I've enjoyed his reviews and information long before there was a HD DVD vs. Blu debate. I found DVDtown only recently while I was doing a search for online cataloging of titles. I liked this site, thought I could contribute in the message boards and signed up.
I digress, what about his information is inacurate? Do you mean to say that their isn't going to be a press release tomorrow?
Or is it that the information regarding the Star Trek series is not fair?
To the first, I say you only have to wait a few more hours...to the second..well I guess you can wait for an official announcement for that as well.
I'll tell you this much, I'm a PS3 owner and I'm enjoying the movies that I have on it. If Toshiba announces tomorrow that they have figured out a way pull all the studio support to their side, I'll flop sides in a hot minuite..and I'll enjoy every minute of it. In the end I only want to watch movies in the highest quality possible and I think both formats offer that..
I hope the end is near.

ReaggieP... yeah, and which format has the HIGHER SALES to date?...
see, in your list of what 'killed' HD-DVD, you never mentioned the fact that Blu-ray media outsold HD-DVD media, which is consumer choice, and not just because the buyers were hypnotized by fancy advertising (LOL).
I know I wasn't. My reason for dual adoption (and everyone here has heard this many times before now!)... CONTENT, CONTENT, CONTENT.
Content is POWER (and Blu-ray has it). Combine that 'power' with consumer sales, and there's your reason for what 'killed' HD-DVD, unfortunately (for those not being a dual-adopter).
You don't need a 'survey' to understand this.

Content, Content...
A lot of people for HD used to talk about the internet content of HD and the Ucontrol abilities but the people for BD said they didn't care about that and just wanted to watch the movie!?
HD movies look the same as BD movies. Most people that actually compared the two side by side said that BD might have a teeny advantage in sound.

Why should you be offended? The accusation was directed at Bill Hunt and not yourself. I could go at length at the inaccurate FUD he has perpetuated against HD DVD and give embarrassing examples of the unprofessional fanboyism that caused it. But, what's the point at this stage? He did very little to influence the outcome. We all have our opinion, and while I have no reason to believe he was a shill, he gave HD DVD supporters just cause to dislike him as much as they do.

Well, I'm mostly offended that an editor I've respected for a good while was called a Shill (not really sure what that is .. but I'm quite positive it's derogatory).
Not too stray too far off topic, but he makes it quite clear that he and his site are pro blu, and I would certainly understand that a red supporter would feel slighted by some of the site's comments. With that said, I've seen little in the way of FUD.
I've only payed attention to the format war since late December about the time they declared their allegiance to the blu format. I'll dig through the site since his articles are all archived..I realize it doesn't make much difference/sense now, but I would be a bit disappointed to find that the site contributed to false information and I defended it. If that is indeed the case, then I retract all comments.
With that said, good luck RED, and again..if the announcement is "We got all the studios", then I'll be at BB/CC/Target to pick up a HD DVD before they can raise the prices..(not to say that they would..just trying to emphasize my lack of allegiance..which is actually blu..but only because I think it is inevitable).

Therefore I'm forced to reiterate what I said before, maybe I should clarify it for you again. False Hype(Great advertising strategy from the Blue Ray Camp, Which ULTIMATELY CREATES SALES) Manufacture support (This includes Hardware and Software , Your SO-CALLED CONTENT ARGUMENT), and last one CATCH THIS, Retail Backing for Blu-Ray(Capturing BB and others in boardroom meeting?)...
No when I first posted this, don't you think I thought of all of these reasons? These are the THREE core "business decisions" That put Blu-Ray where it is today. Someone or somebody in an office or boardroom came up with these decision to sway sucess in their favor...Hey it worked!!!
Their Business model worked? Do you have any business education in your background?
Geeze did anyone take Grade 7 social studies? Remember the "Spinning jenny"
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spinning_jenny
And that war took place in the 1700's

yes, customers misled by false advertising and paid off employees who were told to push one format over the other. HD-DVD never had a chance.

I'm sure your definition of FUD differs from mine, regarding the topic and hand. We'd just go into a back and forth on the format war, and that's rather pointless right now. The war is over, and Blu-ray won. Your remark of 'good luck RED' is rather odd, did you type that on purpose?

Ok Reaggie... Sony hypnotized everyone they contacted, and lured them to joining the BRDA, and to do their will - retail/studio support/advertising support etc... and whatever else you can think up.
And us consumers also bought into Sony's hypnotization as a RE$ULT... except for you and others (HD-DVD only) who were somehow able to RESIST going to the 'dark side' of the Blu-ray HD force. Right?
So, I was Sony-tricked into adopting Blu-ray? - Hmmm....

ReaggieP emotionally said -
OK... so now Sony has the power to look into the future, huh? I wonder how many other companies would like to have "assurance" etc to know that a business venture is "going to succeed" - ?
$uccess is the RESULT of $ALES. And nowhere is sales and 'winning a format war' guaranteed to "succeed".
And how many times have we to be reminded of ALL the past FAILURES that Sony's entertainment divisions have been behind! (oh boy)
The Walkman Cassette player and the PS2 are "hits" - but what about the company's many failures?
The big 'unknown' factor in business is whether the consumer will buy it, and no one really knows in advance of a 'definite success'. Just like you cannot truly predict which movies will be major hits, good hits, minor hits, poor hits, and outright 'turkeys' in the marketplace.
For Blu-ray, Sony had a popular gaming system, and control of a large movie studio/TV division/music division... but nothing was guaranteed to be hugely 'successful', and it still isn't - DON'T FORGET THE LARGE OVERWHELMING SUPPORT for the standard DVD market!
They are now on their way to making profits, but to date have spent much more bankrolling the backend/developement, and will not see real profits for the PS3 or Blu-ray until 2010 at the earliest (according to projections).
AS LONG AS CON$UMERS KEEP MAKING THE PURCHA$ES... see?

Yes, when you have a sucessfull platform you can be boastful of your ideas? Admiration for you partners is a perfect way of decribing a major swing to the industry? I don't see any harm in that. No crystal ball, no fortune teller. My guess is by quarter two, everyone at that time, knew they had a damn good chance of winning. The last few quarters, came the QB sneak, with the WB changing their minds, and the retail support following suit. Those business decision, played by NETFLIX, and Best Buy had to have some form of investment or incentive? If I was in Blu-Ray's position I would have done the same. I'm clearly not mocking it at all. Smart Move by them. None of my comments tonight reflex any form of negativity towards them at all? They played the GAME almost perfectly? Why can't you understand that?

Bruce,
I did type it on purpose. I didn't mean any offense to it. I'm going to assume that their is going to be an early press release and I have a feeling that it is going to negatively impact the HD DVD consumers (RED).
I truly hope, that their is some amends to the early adopters of HD DVD. After some thought, I'm not really concerned about defending the bits, and if they spread FUD..well I'm sure there's enough of that going around everywhere anyways.
I never really meant to start any argument that's not my intention here. Its funny how something so trivial can divide people so easily. Scary. (Not talking about you BA..just in general).

ReaggieP... and why can't you understand my point - that it all depends on CONSUMER SALE$?
Everything you cited does NOT assure consumer sales/profits, just because the "game plan" is being properly executed. It might, or might not. You seem to overlook this, and fail to give credit to the consumers - it's them who will decide if the Blu-ray format becomes a $UCCESS!

Well ReaggieP... you walked right into ^this^ one, by stating exactly my point. Go back and read my comments the last few pages and you'll see how you did it! -LOL-
And NOW you realize... just because a company 'thinks' they have a sound business plan, DOES NOT guarantee success and consumer sales. Sony this time has been successful (so far - DVD is still #1 by a mile), but as you now realized, they haven't been as successful with past product launches... despite believing at the time that their business plan was sound. Ironic, right Reggie?
Now... go ahead... back up a few pages... start over and read again... and wake up to the reality of what I've been saying. -LOL-
And I'll repeat it again, Blu-ray success (so far) has not been because of Sony's 'luring' and 'stacked' business plan [nobody is forced to buy Blu-ray], but due to CON$UMER acceptance - invidividuals who have begun spending money - buying a PS3, or a stand alone, and many Blu-ray movies... CONTENT.
Sony took a chance, but $UCCESS was not guaranteed (despite you claiming otherwise), and it still isn't, as only time will tell if Blu-ray becomes not just an early adopter success... but a MAINSTREAM $UCCESS.
Remember, go back and read our comments, and see where you erred and misunderstood. You're human, and mistakes happen. See, you're not just a puppet who's just destined to $UPPORT Sony in their business plans, right? ...exactly! -LOL-

See, you're not just a puppet who's just destined to $UPPORT Sony in their business plans, right? ...exactly! -LOL-
