With the announcement from Toshiba of the "official" death of HD DVD coming today, what will all of you HD DVD users do with your HD DVD players and movies?

I'm really thinking about checking eBay for some cheap HD-DVDs. There are tons of movies that I want out for it, and I'll be able to get them real cheap so why not? Plus with CH DVDs being compatible with HD-DVD, I just might have to import some Chinese movies and TV shows. As long as CH DVD is around, I think that HD-DVD won't be fully dead..... for some people.

Uh, WHAT?????
What would we need to do with our existing HD DVD collection, and HD DVD Players????
ABSOLUTELY NOTHING.
Tomorrow and beyond the existing HD DVD Software and Hardware will continue to operate as normal.
So, what is the big deal????
Oh yea, what if Microsoft has paid off Paramount, Universal, and FOX???
What if Blu Ray ends the day trying to cover it's own @$$????
Never entertain such possibility....

I'm still going to keep my A35 and movies. Not going to sell them at all. Then I'll buy a Vudu unit. However, I will buy a Blu-Ray stand alone player later on...like end of this year.

I've already bought 4 HD-DVD's since Friday.
We Were Solders(12)
Full Metal Jacket (remastered) (11)
A Clockwork Orange (15)
Forbidden Planet Collectors Edition (30)
So... 58 bucks. Not bad.

Ebay! Someone put it up for 25 bucks with a "Buy It Now" Feature.
I felt that it was my duty to snatch that as fast as I could.

With recent purchases (including the pre-order of the BEOWULF HD-DVD now releasing), I own almost 60 HD-DVDs, and now almost the same number of Blu-rays too - picked up CON AIR and THE ROCK yesterday at Best Buy. Each was on sale for $14.95, and with my 10% coupon (I get them every month being a BB cardholder), the cost was just $13.50 + tax.
I enjoy ALL of my disc formats - LaserDisc, DVD, HD-DVD, and Blu-ray. I own 3 working LD players, 4 DVD players, 1 HD-DVD player (and will be buying another soon for a back-up), and a PS3.
As stated previously, I DON'T DUMP DISC FORMATS.

you also get that nice $1o rebate on Con Air and The Rock if you own any of the older DVD versions. That alone got me to pick them up a few weeks ago.

Damn, now it's going to be at least a two year wait before we get to laugh at all the BluRay fanboys when Blu goes obsolete.
Whatever will people discuss here in the interim?
My God, is it possible someone might actually discuss movies for a change?
No no, I was just kidding. That would be ridiculous!

I'd like to jump on any bargains that happen, but am I right in saying Toshiba are not going to be making any new players? That's what it sounded like from the press statement. That's my only concern, that if my xbox add-on drive breaks, then I wouldn't be able to buy another HD-DVD drive, and be left with redundant discs. It's kinda keeping between deciding to sell my drive and 9 movies, keep them as they are and dont buy any more, or keep them and buy lots of bargains.

As a long time supporter for the HD DVD side I must say that it is a shame that it turned out this way. But let's be fair here, they gave it their best but the market choose for Blu-Ray. I'm really pleased that this format war is finally over.
Personally I've never hated Blu unlike a lot of fanboys but was more attracted to what HD offered it's consumers. As soon as I read the announcement from Warner to go Blu I already saw this moment coming. It all went down hill from there.
What will I do with my standalone HD player? I will keep it to play my 70+ titles and for it's great upconverting properties with standerd def dvd's. And as for me supporting Blu-Ray, hell yeah. I recently purchased the Playstation 3 just to play these discs and fanboys from both sides must admit that at first HD had the upperhand when it came to quality and features but that Blu is gaining a lot of ground. With the release of profile 1.1 Blu actually can offer everything that HD could except for the online features.
Good luck to both sides and let's just hope that the BDA will help lower the prices for movies and players to the affordable stage so that mass adoption can finally take place in the HD market.

I'm approaching 100 HD DVD titles and I will continue to buy when I can find bargins. I purchased a componet switcher (I'm using the analogue outputs) the other day for 12 bucks at a dollar store (the same Phillips USA they sell on Amazon for 26) and it is already hooked up to my A-35 awaiting the addition of a BD player. I'm going to watch and see what happens with BD prices and buy probably in late summer. My wife doesn't think I'll make it that far!
Before anybody asks, there does not seem to be any degredation in the sound quality through the switcher.
HD DVD was a great trip. I have no regrets. Now it's time to move on.

Why sell it, I would never get back what I paid for it. Besides I don't see a difference between the quality of both formats even after comparison. I'll just keep it for a up scale dvd player and keep the HD movies I have for it. I might perchase more when they drop in price.

I agree, buy more movies because you can always buy a CH DVD player (somebody will be smart enough to include english menus and NTSC) if your HD DVD Player breaks.

Here is a good suggestion, it would be wise to buy a back up HD DVD player. Because when they are gone they are gone. And if the current player you have goes BOOM, then you are stuck with a pile of HD DVD movies that are'nt worth the nuttin. Thats why I was hoping Toshiba would make a quality dual player.

After a bit more thought, I think it would be stupid of me to sell, as I wouldn't make much back from it. As I've only got 9 movies (5 free), I'll just keep what I have now and start buying HD movies again when I get a blu-ray player. If my xbox drive breaks, it's only 4 movies I'll have to re-purchase on blu-ray anyway. Here's hoping for a sub-£200 blu-ray player soon!

I think you will be able to buy HD DVD players on either Ebay or Amazon etc for quite some time. I was checking craigslist in Toronto and I saw an HD-A2 for $60 and another for $80. Sweet deal! Those prices are worth it just to watch your DVD's upconverted to 1080i and you know DVD will be around for a few years at least. Not all movies are worth paying extra money for hidef.
I will keep checking Ebay and such and I will get the HD-XA2 one day for sure, no if's ands or buts about it. I have roughly 40 HD DVD's now and I still have to buy a few more at least like The Matrix Trilogy, The Oceans Trilogy, Planet Earth, etc. To be honest there are at least another 20 HD DVD movies that I still have to buy but I'm sure there are more. I'm looking forward to buying these movies at bargain prices.

Is it a sure thing that the CH DVD movies will work in our HD DVD players? If so that is cool. I will be buying up a lot of movies once they get major reductions on amazon. Maybe even get an extra Toshiba player when they are reduced as well. Beowulf will be my next purchase.

does anyone think that some retailers, like best buy, would allow consumers to return their HD dvd players? I purchased mine back in December and it works fine. It would be great if you could return your HD dvd and use that to purchase a blu ray player or PS3.
I am still undecided. There are still some titles I am hoping make it out on their release days like 'into the wild, and 'there will be blood'.
this sucks

What will I do?
Well, lets put it this way, I bought a $98 HD DVD player, and around eight $15 HD DVD movies ($120 more or less), the total is give or take around $218...
And the cheapest blu-ray player was what $399? And that player can't be upgraded? Well, I didn't lose as much as those who bought THOSE soon to be obsolete blu-ray players...
EDIT: TO answer the question, I will enjoy my less than $250 purchases...

For the love of god, can you stop that BS about older Blu-ray players becoming obsolete! They will not be obsolete. The only thing they won't be able to play is the PIP features and/or some future BD Live content. Honestly, WHO CARES?!!!!!!!! Probably only about 2-5% of the viewing public. That's it.
You can still watch every movie in its full 1080p glory with full lossless audio and also play 95% of the special features. SO JUST GET OVER IT!

What many people fail to realize is this format war is a little different from past wars. When DVD surpassed Laser Disc there was a reason to upgrade your collection. Laser disc was 420 lines of resolution whereas DVD was 480 lines of resolution. Having bought over 70 hd-dvd there is no need for me to re-buy these titles since they share all the same specs in sound and vision as blu-ray. I will just continue watching my 1100 dvds and 70 hd-dvds until blu-ray specs are finalized and bring me an equal viewing experience as HD-DVD has done.

All Blu-ray specs have been finalized for a long time now, and with the introductions of the Panasonic DMP-BD50 player which is a profile 2.0 player, you'll see it all implemented in stand-alone player. If you need a player NOW that will be updateable to profile 2.0, then just get a PS3. BUT, if you're a Sony hater then I guess you'll just have to wait a little while longer.

I couldn't agree more. I will continue buying HD DVD movies since it will take quite some time for bluray to get some of these movies and the 1080P/24 video quality of HD DVD is still amazing know matter how you slice it so you won't see any improvement in the picture quality side. There may be a slight improvement in the sound dept on some movies as bluray may start offering LPCM sound tracks more regularly (who knows?) but to be honest Dolby TrueHD sounds pretty freakin good on HD DVD and the Dolby Digital+ tracks aren't too shabby either. I'll buy as many HD DVD's for cheap as I can and if there is a new release on bluray that I absolutely must have in hidef (and isn't available on HD DVD somehow) than I'll probably buy it BUT considering there are over 400 HD DVD's out there already (not including imports) it will be quite some time before that happens. For the quality you get on HD DVD movies and the prices they are going for I'll keep it up for sometime and then there's always Bestbuy with their one day prices on release day for $20 on new releases for DVD's. They should look sweet on the HD-XA2 when finally snatch one up. I figure I won't need to get into bluray for quite a while.

It will be intresting to see what XPloited Cinema does with their import stock. If they lower their prices, I'll buy a bunch if they don't, I'll buy a smaller bunch. But I WILL keep adding to my collection.

I need to go home after work and check, but I'm hoping that my player still works. I just hope I get there before it hears the news and stops working. Maybe if noone tells it, it will keep playing my current movies.
I seriously thought about trading in the few HD DVDs I have and replacing them with the BR ones. Then again, since they will look and sound the same, why bother. I'll just move on to BR on the PS3.
Oh well, grats to Sony. I guess you can't lose em all hu?

BTW, this whole notion of "still supporting HD DVD" even though it's dead is exactly why Toshiba is a huge steaming pile of StoreHighInTransit for prolonging this war. They made a lot of you feel like HD DVD is your religion and you don't want to let go.
If Toshiba had thrown in the towel in early 2007 then this wouldn't have been as much of an issue. So if you're gonna be mad at anybody, be mad at Toshiba. Look at them now, they're still trying to string you along by not supporting Blu-ray yet.
If there was any dignity to be had by Toshiba they would have thrown their support to Blu-ray while maintaining consumer assistance for anyone who had the misfortune of buying and HD DVD player and discs. If Toshiba really wanted to be cool they'd offer a trade in solution to allow their customers to switch over to Blu-ray. Frankly that's the only thing they could do to clean some of the egg off of their face.

ScottBaio you are obviously very bluray biased and that's fine. You have your opinions and I have mine.
HD DVD is far from a religion to me. I love watching movies and the best picture and sound possible. In my opinion not only was HD DVD better that bluray this whole time, it was a complete format. Especially with the prices of HD DVD players that were futureproof from the beginning with ethernet ports for updates and web content which bluray is just now getting?? If you don't agree that's fine but don't expect to convince those who know better otherwise.
Bluray won and if it's the format you chose than be happy. Some of us will be enjoying HD DVD for years to come and eventually if theres a reason to bluray as well.
By the way you're taking this stuff way too personally. You sound like an extreme fanboy when you write things like this...

I'm keeping my HD DVD player (XBOX 360 add-on) and movies. I got "Heroes" on HD DVD for free with it - plus the 5 free movies. I still have a laserdisc player and movies, too! I will DEFINITELY be looking for discounted HD DVDs on-line and at local used DVD stores that sell them.
Now if Microsoft would release a blu-ray add-on drive for the XBOX 360... that would be GREAT! I've got this odd-sized HD DVD player in my A/V rack with nothing next to it - an identical drive that played blu-ray discs would fit next to it perfectly!!! If they don't - which would be a real shame, I'll probably buy a dual-format player.
Maybe now that the format war is over - all thanks to Sony and their underhanded tactics in making it happen - some of the movies that were NEVER released in anamorphic widescreen on DVD will be released on blu-ray (The Rocketeer - [Disney], The Shadow - [Universal], The Abyss - [Fox]... to name a few).

Hey, Hendrix... it's funny that you mentioned "True Lies" in that list. I had noticed on an HD channel I was watching, that True Lies was on next, so I set my DVR to record it... and I watched it begin, and I was disappointed to see not only was it NOT in HD, but it was the pan & scan (full-frame) version - and to make it REALLY BAD... it was "s-t-r-e-t-c-h-e-d" to fill the screen. ARRRRGH!!!
I thought that the collector's edition (boxed set) of "Armageddon" was enhanced for 16x9?

Hey V.V... I don't know exactly about the 'collector's box set' of Armageddon (maybe it is 16x9) - I'm just going on my memory of the regular DVD from years ago. Didn't know they had remastered it(?). Btw, I prefer Deep Impact much better myself - at least the asteroid did, in fact, hit the Earth (and there were consequences).
Titanic was originally on DVD without 16x9, but Paramount has since released it twice (one a box set which I purchased new at BBuy for just $8 awhile back), and each has been remasterd, anamorphic/16x9.
I want a Blu-ray hi-def version of THE BLACK STALLION - it's one of my very favorites, especially I love the outstanding cinematography, surround sound, and beautiful musical score by the late Carmine Coppola. Long out-of-print on DVD, but at least I have two LaserDisc editions (one Widescreen, and the other Full-Frame) to keep myself happy until a remastered version is done by MGM.

Falcon01, you are a complete idiot if you ever thought HD DVD was a complete format. It had (notice how I said "had" as HD DVD is now DEAD) plenty of issues of it's own.
Disc makers themselves have already said that their customers preferred Blu-ray because of it's larger storage capacity. Blu-ray stores more data! More then half of the movies on Blu-ray are currently on 50 gig discs. Blu-ray is superior for that alone.
If you're enjoying HD DVD for years to come then good for you, I could care less ... hell, people are probably still enjoying laser disc ... oh, wait THEY'RE NOT. HA!
To me it's pretty much just funny ... sure there are plenty of people who bought HD DVD and didn't know any better and for them I actually feel sorry and hope they are able to return their players and discs. It's the flaming HD DVD fanatics who deserve the wrath of my posts.
Toshiba made a huge blunder, and because of their dumb business practices they got served ... as did Microsoft. So they deserve the bad press they've gotten in the media. What's sad is that Toshiba used tactics that Blu-ray didn't employ, like paying off a studio to join their side ... and that didn't even work.
Toshiba did what they had to do by throwing in the towel, they were forced to do it ... and sometimes that's what it takes when a company is blind to what people really want.

People have thier preferences between HD, BD and digital downloads, but come on dude, it's a disc with a movie on at the end of the day. Get a grip and go out for a beer or something. So what if we prefer HD, you obviously prefer BD, so you go and enjoy BD movies, we'll enjoy what HD movies we already have, stop being so childish!

jimmy, now see you're actually making a reasonable argument, lots of HD DVD fanatics here don't. So now that they've got their precious format canceled, they're getting a bit upset and crying, and I'm taking great joy in it.
Though, the whole notion of 2 formats was a mistake to begin with, and it is Toshiba we have to blame for this.
Sure it's just a disc, but to many HD DVD fanatics here it's a religion, and a very inferior religion at that.

This coming from the person who backed up his statement as to why the PS3 is better than the XBOX 360 by talking about Motorstorm. LOL
Thank you for that laugh.

The PS3 cannot ever be as powerful as a 360.... it lacks 'Unified Shader Architecture' HAHAHA
Seriously Motorstorm was weak sauce....and Assasins Creed ran like Treacle compared to the 360 version, and lets not forget the PS3 cannot do MSAA or HDR at the same time unlike the 360.
The PS3 was a mess to start with and frankly as a games machine its lost its way and SONY has been to busy marketing and pushing it as a BLU-RAY player... when Microsoft brings out a BLU-RAY for the XBOX360 then the PS3 has NOTHING going for it as well....
Personally I play mostly on my PC and it more powerful than both together so I'm not biased.. ok maybe I am towards PC... but the 360 is a fantastic console and has so many things right with it. Ohh and its over 2 years old as well...

Wow the more you guys post the more it undoes the fact that HD DVD is now officially dead.
Right?
Oh wait ... it doesn't. But at least you can look forward to your RRODs right? HA! ... and ... you have to wait 30 seconds ... or is it 50 for your HD DVD player to start up? ... then 30 seconds to play a movie?
Well at least you have lots of studios still supporting your format right? ... oh shoot ... man I think I'm gonna make myself cry if I keep thinking about what it must be like to be you right now. LOL!

Actually my friend has a HD-DVD... its 10-15 seconds to boot the HD-DVD.... and actually she is not to bothered about HD-DVD loosing she will just go out and buy a BLU-RAY when they finish the format and so will I.
Some of us have jobs and work for a living SCOTT and don't spend all the time on this forum flaming people and can actually afford to buy a player again... however in BLU-RAY's state it just worth saving up.

Tim, How is HD-DVD inferior? Can you please explain it to me? Maybe I can't see the light without my Blu galsses on. In the end aren't audio and video quality equal? Price and reliabilty have to lean towards HD-DVD. So where is HD-DVD inferior? And I already know about the extra storage, big deal. When in the end it all looks the same. I can handle Blu-Ray "won", but everyone educated enough knows that Blu-Ray is not superior. And I know that you're educated, so I find it hard to believe that you would give credence to anything that troll would say.

My observation was that the fanboys treat it like a RELIGION! I could care less which one is inferior or superior, as I've stated several times over the years that I own neither format. I've waited all this time for this entire mess to be over with and spent not one dime on supporting it. I have nothing to lose nor do I have anything to gain by responding to these threads. From what I can tell, he's been kicked off twice already, and as he should be, but I have to agree you HD DVD guys -- AND BLU GUYS -- treat this whole entire subject as a religion.

Can the owners/moderators of this web site start charging new users a fee to create an account, so the flamers will stop harassing the regulars here? Anyone can read the threads, but if someone has something truly worthwhile to contribute... I think a posting fee is in order!
Also... why should anyone be encouraged to get rid of movies that they own - no matter what format? There are two versions out now, of the movie "Full Metal Jacket". If you aren't that picky about the sound quality or the extras that have been added to the new mastering of it... why buy the new one (I do own the new one, BTW - it was one of my freebies)?
ScottBaio(insert incrementing number here ) said we should all get rid of our HD DVD stuff and save the environment. Wouldn't getting rid of our HD DVD stuff be doing the exact opposite? I have many movies on previous formats no longer supported. The movies still play. Granted, they aren't HD... but many are widescreen format, and until they are released in a widescreen format on DVD or blu-ray... I will keep them and continue enjoying watching them!
I suspect that SB# hasn't lived long enough to "own" anything other than the technology that's been around for the past 10 years. That's too bad. I've owned EVERY video format that ever came out (except for Beta). At least the quality of HD DVD will last the lifetime of blu-ray. I'll also own the technology that makes blu-ray (and HD DVD) obsolete, so no one ever really has the last laugh. Technology is ALWAYS advancing!

If your observation was that fanboys treat it like a religion, then maybe you should have just quoted that part and not included the inferior format section of the post.
You're right, you don't have to explain anything to me. I already know. I was not demanding anything, just asking for your opinion on why you thought HD-DVD was inferior. I actually come here to hear educated opinions. I thought that was what this board was for? I guess I was just a little disappointed that you would acknowledge anything SB would have to say as credible.

Ok, broken record time: with all the problems that plague the world on a global level you guys actually take a simple disc player more serious than, say, famine. So yes, I find all your knee-jerk reactions to Scotty funny because I realize there are REAL issues in the world that are far more important than a troll getting under your skin.
This is a message board about "simple little disc players" and movies and such. Not about famine or other REAL issues. Why would we be talking about those things here? Especially with people on the same maturity level as SB. Who said he's getting under my skin? Trust me, it takes alot more than anything SB could ever come up with. I think most people here would rather not see inflamatory posts that you find humorous. I mean, who can't say "stop crying" over and over again. Wow, that is really funny.
I still find it curious that you accuse posters like me as taking this too seriously and then turn around and say that you find SB "entertaining", whenhe obviously has more invested in posting on this board than anyone who responds to him. Not to mention SB has been consistently losing the insult war. His posts aren't nearly as funny as the responses he's been getting. Oh well, as you said yourself, I guess its just the level of your maturity.
