"The path for widespread adoption of the next-generation platform has finally become clear. Universal will continue its aggressive efforts to broaden awareness for hi-def´s unparalleled offerings in interactivity and connectivity, at an increasingly affordable price. The emergence of a single, high-definition format is cause for consumers, as well as the entire entertainment industry, to celebrate."

Is there another format coming out? Or did the BDA write this statement for them? Interactivity and connectivity at an increasingly affordable price.

I think it means Universal wants to be able to use its U-Control feature and will push BRDA to get it working right ASAP.

That didn't take long, did it? HD got dropped like a bad prom date. At least now we get Jaws and Jurassic Park.

I wonder how this will effect movies already, announced. Will they still release them on HD-DVD?

As Skyhawk previously said, I hope the new Universal Blu releases are NOT some of the SAME LAME editions as seen on HD-DVD - many without the SpEd extras (of the DVD), and the added EE - Edge Enhancement - which makes your HD picture look like upconverted DVD.

"If you look at it from a purely technical side, HD DVD was perhaps slightly superior compared with Blu-ray," said Checchia.

The key to Sony's success this time around was that its chief executive Howard Stringer, a former head of the company's North America division, drew on his Hollywood contacts to drum up support for Blu-ray.

Blu-ray's success was also helped by its inclusion in Sony's PlayStation 3 video-game machine.

Yet again, for as much "multitasking" that we can say we do, the PS3 is a gaming console...

Yes, I used my PS2 to watch DVDs most of the time, but the picture wasn't as good as a stand alone DVD player (and I had a cheap one). My PS2 never broke, what did was a cable, but the actual console is still working.

Let's hope that blu-ray winning the format war brings us lower prices, like a $98 blu-ray player...one can only dream...

I think $98 blu-player is not a dream. As I remember, the first DVD player I bought is over $400 which is already the cheapest in the market.

Now the DVD player is only few tens and the quality is already very good.

I also remember the first DVDs I bought were around $30 but now it is below $10.

mvckalel, if you're interested I could search the Internet for you and perhaps a way to permanently disable all gaming capability in a PS3 if you wanted. I'll be glad to help.
