I guess if I am going into the market for a blu-ray player (like many reluctant others), I need good, logical suggestions. Criteria will be as follows:
-Must be a player that has an ethernet port so it can get the updates.
-Must be a player that has not had playback issues.
-Must be a player that has not been known to have had many problems.
I will say that I am sad to see HD-DVD go (seriously, it has not let me down)! With Blu-Ray more in the market (or forced in per se), they better not let consumers down, because it can get ugly.

Get a ps3. Not only will it play blu-ray but there are also about 3 games that will be out by the end of the year that look good that are ps3 only

But really I plan on getting the ps3

Oh yeah, I nearly forgot two more criteria.
-Must be decently priced.
-MUST NOT BE A PS3 (I'm not in the aim for a POS gaming system)

Well yes it is a POS gaming system but for bluray playing it seems good. Maybe its just a really fancy blu-ray player and not a game system

Unfortunately there isn't a standalone player that meets those criteria, yet. I say just wait it out, just because HD-DVD is dead doesn't mean you have to buy a Blu-ray player today.

I guess the salesman wherever will not be able to help the consumer on that ground. I mean, if they are pushing Blu-Ray so bad, why won't they be able to positively push it without the PS3?

I have no complaints with Panasonic DMPBD30. It doesn't have the Internet connection though for updates, but you can simply burn the firmware update. Or just wait until the 50 comes out which will be 2.0 profile compatible (but really, do you really plan on using these features for a couple hundred dollars more?).

Exactly, if you're going to play extra for Web based content while watching the movie, you better be really interested in using it!:

Panasonic just introduced their new Blu-ray player, the DMP-BD50. Like we heard at the press conference, BD-Live is getting rolled out across the lineup and this unit has all the other goodies you'd expect in the latest from Panasonic: Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD MA, PIP functionality and the Viera-link functionality for control of multiple components through a single remote. Video processing goes through the Unipher processor, a combination of chroma and deinterlacing developed by Panasonic Hollywood Laboratories. Last but not least, this player gets treated to playback of SD-based media.

I'm seriously thinking about waiting this generation out. I've got a decent DVD collection. I had stopped buying movies all together while trying to decide which HD format to go with. I wanted to go with HD-DVD but I wanted to wait it out a bit. Now I think I am just going continue to build up SDVD library. I've got my HD VMD player on the way, which will serve as my upconverting, region free DVD player and possible HD VMD player.
I will be content with my HD projector, my standard DVDs and my upconverting DVD player for many years to come.

dual format owner.
if you want a good reliable player. just get a ps3. let go of all your hard feelings and get a ps3 because is the best player all around period. Once you buy the remote for it, you'll forget it plays games. ----I did! then you sqay bye bye to all the playback retarded blu players around.
I have many complaits about the ps3 as a gaming machine vs 360. but as a blu player, it has been flawless have to admit.

The PS3 is where it's at. It is the best High Definition player available and has been since the start of the war.

As much as I hate BR, the PS3 is pretty decent from what I have read. I own one and although I don't use it that much (I upscale with the Toshiba) it works good. Once I figured out the bugs I haven't had a problem since.

what truth is there to using the PS3 soley as movie player is bad for the PS3 and may cause it to die early?

I wouldn't necessarily call the PlayStation "the best" it's just the most versatile. As mentioned it lacks certain audio options and IR capabilities, and it's a pretty big machine. On the other hand, it can play games which might appeal to some people, and it's 2.0 ready.

Hey Falcon... yeah, I'm thinking that perhaps the forthcoming Panasonic BD50 2.0 profile player might EQUAL the great Toshiba XA2 player, that you noted above (Sound and Vision award).
Of course, I have the PS3 and just will use it for as long as it works, before buying another Blu-ray player. Right now, I'm going to pick up a spare HD-DVD player (or 2), with the falling prices. I own around 60 HD-DVDs, and like you will be picking up more as discounts, closeouts, and auctioned deals begin showing up en masse.

Why is the X-a2 so great? Is it better than the A-30 and why?

Yes it's better than the A-30, since the XA2 has the Silicon Optix Reon HQV video processor, along with analog audio outs. I believe the XA2 has audio options the A-30 doesn't have as well? Even the A-35 doesn't doesn't have the Reon though, making the XA2 still Toshiba's flagship player.

It's terribly sad, we are pushed to buy blu-ray, and it does not fully work across the board. When I buy stuff, I want not just the crust, but all the toppings. I want my money's worth. Seriously, where's the wrong in asking for what we deserve?
Like it was said in an earlier post, we bought HD-DVD because it fully works. Also, I am not getting one right away, but when I do get one, I am going to thoroughly look this player over, whichever one it would be, before I buy it.
