I guess if I am going into the market for a blu-ray player (like many reluctant others), I need good, logical suggestions. Criteria will be as follows:
-Must be a player that has an ethernet port so it can get the updates.
-Must be a player that has not had playback issues.
-Must be a player that has not been known to have had many problems.
I will say that I am sad to see HD-DVD go (seriously, it has not let me down)! With Blu-Ray more in the market (or forced in per se), they better not let consumers down, because it can get ugly.

Get a ps3. Not only will it play blu-ray but there are also about 3 games that will be out by the end of the year that look good that are ps3 only

But really I plan on getting the ps3

They don't make one yet. Thats why we all bought HD-DVD.

Oh yeah, I nearly forgot two more criteria.
-Must be decently priced.
-MUST NOT BE A PS3 (I'm not in the aim for a POS gaming system)

Well yes it is a POS gaming system but for bluray playing it seems good. Maybe its just a really fancy blu-ray player and not a game system

Unfortunately there isn't a standalone player that meets those criteria, yet. I say just wait it out, just because HD-DVD is dead doesn't mean you have to buy a Blu-ray player today.

I guess the salesman wherever will not be able to help the consumer on that ground. I mean, if they are pushing Blu-Ray so bad, why won't they be able to positively push it without the PS3?

I have no complaints with Panasonic DMPBD30. It doesn't have the Internet connection though for updates, but you can simply burn the firmware update. Or just wait until the 50 comes out which will be 2.0 profile compatible (but really, do you really plan on using these features for a couple hundred dollars more?).
