Hi, new here. I got a stupid question in regards to the blu ray player profiles. From what i understood, the players without an ethernet port will not be updateable when 2.0 comes out. However, there are blu ray players that have ethernet ports. does that mean they will run fine when 2.0 comes out w/ a firmware update? The Samsung BD-P1400 has a port)

Also, if they wont work, will they still be able to play the movie itself?

Thanks for your time to respond.

In order for a player to be profile 2.0 compliant it has to have 1GB of persistent storage as well as the Ethernet port. BTW, all movies and most of the special features will play just fine, the only thing you won't be able to access is PiP commentaries and/or extra added online content.

Thats like saying, hey you know that new car you just bought. Well when you put the key in the ignition it starts up and it will run like a clock. However you won't be able to use the radio or the heater. I think thats what you call an inferior produt if I am correct?

LOL, hey what about using a 1Gb Sony memory stick to get the persistent memory? LOL

I see, another useless observation on your part IB. That's a stupid comparison. What does PiP and online content have to the with watching a movie in its full HD 1080p glory and with dynamic lossless audio? Absolutely nothing. Just stick with your HD DVD player and see how long you'll have content to watch on it.

Ah come on Vortex, stop being such a poor looser. It is a dead on comparison. Ok do I have to explain this to you like a 5th grader.... Ok vortex, if you buy something from a retail store. And it is supposed to do certain things for you, and that product you buy does not and there is no way of correcting it then that is an inferior product. Then you take it back from where you purchased it, and get a new one. But you cannot do that with 97% of the stand alone Blu Ray players because thats how they work. And there is no correcting it, again making that product inferior. Thats why most Blu Ray disc's are being played on a PS3, which by the way is a gaming console.
Vortex , dude you won, you should be happy not so damned sore at all us HD DVD supporters.

Umm... perhaps you're new to this CE thing, but the rest of the world's population are all pretty used to CE devices having different capabilities and features that primarily perform a certain function. Standard DVD players are an example, as are iPods, or TVs, HD DVD players, HT receivers, and ... well you should get the picture by now.

Skyhawk, there is no use in spelling things out to certain people. They just don't get it. IB, you're just a flaming, resentful little HD fanboy who's still reeling from this week's turn of events. A simple suggestion, get over it. The OP of this particular thread had a question and I'm just trying to provide some answers for him, while you're only here to spam this thread with your BS. Quit your whining, keep your wonderful $98 player and go and spread your misery on someone else's thread. Thank you in advance....

You can compare me to whoever you want, but I won't back down from someone like IB when all he does is spread his miserable, empty rhetoric while I just state facts. He attacks Blu-ray while I stay neutral about the whole thing. The most ironic thing is that he called ME a spin doctor in a previous thread. Coming from him that's laughable.

Hey gvortex, you can't le people get next to you. IB used to get next to me too, I too understand that a personal attack on a person who only post information and not trolling is a reason to get upset. I know, it still happens to me. I also find it funny that when you do hit a person with a big dose of logic that their only rebuttal is spreading FUD and or attack. Don't let IB get to you, if you don't feed him than he can't eat.

EDIT: You never know the both of you may find a common ground and become posting buddies.

The funny thing is I'm not upset at all and I never had a problem with IB until his personal attacks on me, but I also won't stand by idly and let someone talk BS and spread FUD either. So, it's all balanced out I guess.

Let's also consider Standard DVD... many will offer bonus CD-ROM or DVD-ROM computer content (and web-enabled viewing), requiring you to remove the disc from the DVD player (SINCE IT CANNOT ACCESS IT), and then put the disc in a computer with an applicable drive.

The point here is that the disc contains some bonus content that the player is INCAPABLE of accessing, and requires the viewer to USE ANOTHER MACHINE (computer) so as to access it.

So OK, some of the early Blu-ray players cannot access some of the bonus content, but shouldn't affect their ability to watch the movie and basic extras, apart from a few problematic discs requiring a firmware update (an issue that was found on HD-DVD too, with some titles).

It is not like we are on here trying to find the cure for cancer either. And you are still pissin about the spin doctor thing, c'mon dude. I said the other day that you were my favorite Blu Ray fan on here and you never even gave me a solid on that one.
Tony, I have no idea what you are talking about? When did I ever piss you off ? Maybe it was when I first joned this site, but I cannot remember lately that I jarred your innards LOL.

Have you had a chance to read my last post? If yes, then what's with the "take a chill pill" comment? It seems like you need it more than I do.

The issue is why should anyone pay for a product thats priced comparably to top of the line players and yet has a ceiling to its upgradability...most people who work for their money would probably have a problem with that.

That being said, if you dont CARE about PIP, then go for it.

ok, well, thanks for some of the posts.
it looks like it will be a PS3 for me.

I currently have an hd dvd player w/ about 50 movies or so, and i do plan on keeping it because i really do enjoy the movies i purchased, and i really think the player is a great product. i dont regret anything. i thought Toshiba had an incredible opportunity at the beginning to win the war, but i guess thats the risk of picking a side.

Now, thats its done, it obvious that if i want to continue getting hi-def dvd's, i will need to get a blu ray player.

The point of this thread wasn't to cause any arguing, although that seems to be what happened. I know how some of the HD DVD supporters are feeling about the current situation, but there really isnt any options anymore, but move on.

My original intention (and my only one) was to try to help you. I apologize for some of the other comments made regarding a certain other member.
