If anyone here has an Xbox 360 I suggest you wait until around May because instead of picking up a PS3 (which is the best option right now for a good blu-ray player) wait until Microsoft comes out with a Blu-Ray add-on for the 360. It will likely be cheap like the HD DVD add-on. I got mine for less than 200. Keep in mind though that this is only a rumor but I think it is highly possible.

Compare that to $400 for a PS3. Not to mention, the PS3, IMO, is not really that great of a console compared the 360 and if you just buy it for a PS3 I can't help but feeling it is a bit of a waste. However if you do not own a 360 and you are interested in getting Blu-Ray then although it is a mite expensive it is really the only way to get the fully upgraded blu-ray player. Hopefully Sony can fix this because the last thing I would want is to buy a BR player and then have certain BR movies that I can't play on it.

Which brings me to the question of what early adopters of BR (non-PS3) are doing when version 2 or whatever comes out?

Also keep in mind the 360 has no 1080p/24 support (only 1080p/60) and does not support any of the HD audio codecs and never will. For the average person it doesn't matter though.

It could though.... its like a PC Lite.

I seem to remember the Xbox360 only had 720P when it first came out.... I guess time will tell

Besides Microsoft could also you a bit of redesigning and release another model... I'd sure buy one to replace my still working 2 year old 1st Edition 360...

That would sure put the fear onto SONY then LOL

I'll be patiently waiting for the bluray add-on to come out. I would much rather get the XBOX 360 than the PS3 anyday since it has not only many more games but at the moment MUCH better games. I hope IF Microsoft decides to do it that they do a press release so we know it's coming.

Personally I think they will.... Sony can't stop them if they want to.

Even if there will be a delay at least it will give time for Blu-Ray to develop a bit more as well.

So the PS3 does have 1080p/24 with the latest firmware?

Does it also have the DTS HD audio codec?

Why the PS3 isn't the best Blu-ray player

Quote:
At $400, with the PS3's ability to be updated to support just about any new Blu-ray feature, it seems like the best value but there's one thing about the PS3 that is often overlooked. No, we're not talking about the lack of IR remote (easily solved with a $15 adapter) we're talking about the limited audio codec support. Sure, the PS3 supports Doby TrueHD decoding internally, but it lacks a big one, DTS HD. For whatever reason, the PS3 does not support bitstream output -- no, not even TrueHD -- only PCM, and since there's no DTS HD decoder built in, that leaves out one of the hottest new codecs. Sure, only ~15% of Blu-ray titles even include a DTS HD sound track, but judging by the upcoming releases from Sony, Disney, Fox, New Line and Lionsgate, we'd say this number is going to get a lot bigger. At this point, the best option is the Panasonic DMP-BD30 and a newer HDMI 1.3a A/V receiver with all the decoders built in, but who knows, maybe Sony will figure out a way to upgrade the PS3.

Thanks for the info Falcon. Looks like I won't be getting a PS3 soon. Looks like I'm just going to wait it out till I find a good stand alone BR player or if PS3 gets an update for DTS HD.

YES - remember 1080p/24hz requires that your HDTV also specifically allows for a NATIVE 1080p/24 viewing, otherwise regardless of it "accepting" your disc's signal, it will convert to the regular default setting - 1080p/60hz (and adds 3:2 pulldown processing to compensate).

While several of the hi-def disc players allow for 1080p/24 output, VERY FEW TV displays are capable of native 1080p/24 viewing of the signal, and will convert the signal back to 1080p/60hz. With some non-compatiable TVs, the PS3 will not even let you select 1080p/24, and you get a blank screen, and have to choose another resolution.

Pioneer plasmas, are one of the few great TVs which can handle native viewing of 1080p/24 signals.
