Well, I'll have both players, and I'll compare both HD DVD and DVD upscaling when my A35 arrives (or, a few days after, since I'll have to smooth over the wife since I promised no more players
). I can't imagine it equaling the XA2 in upscaling though, since it uses the REON.
Speaking of comparing, I have the Samsung BD-P1200, which also has the REON, and the XA2 upscaling is much better on my display. Furthermore, the Sammy doesn't pillerbox 4:3 content, which is disappointing, since I do like the DVD bookmark feature that the XA2 doesn't have (It would be great for TV on DVD)

I just now picked A35 from Best Buy as an open box item for $135. The player is brand new. Looks like the customer returned the player right after he bought it. It was missing a free copy of 300 HD-DVD. I persuaded BB customer representative and got the free copy. The player is much better than the first generation player A1. Is A35 suppose to be better than A1? I am actually very happy with this purchase.

Wow, great price for that player, and glad to hear you like it so much more than the A1. The A1 is mainly slow, but other than that, it's a fine player. The A35 does a great job with 1080p/24 and also lets you bitstream the audio to a receiver with built-in decoders.

Just snagged an Open Box A35 from best Buy in Gtown MD for $100.00. Like the poster above mine, was in pristine condition, never taken out of the wrapping, both movies in the box still sealed. Looked like they opened it and returned it all in the same day.
From the Rockville, MD Circuit City I snagged an unopened HD-A2... I will say that again an HD-A2 for $85.00. They also threw in 2 free movies (Transformers and Blades of Glory)

I agree with you A1's performance. But 1st gen player is a 1st gen player after all
A35 is slick and fast. I got A1 in Nov 2006 as an open floor model. BB was replacing with with A2 at that time. Same thing happened with A35. Is the upconversion in both the players same - A1 and A35?

I hear the A35 has a little better upconversion, but it's probably ballpark. We'll have both players now in case we get a chance to compare and report our impressions.

Glad to hear it. God knows we deserve these great deals after getting the rug pulled out from under us. Hopefully we'll start to see disc sales as good as the player sales going on. Best Buy needs to have a good sale, like a storewide bogo.

I still have to crack mine open yet. Maybe I should try and sell the movies for a $1 or $2... lol

Hendrix, it's weird that the review you posted says the PS3 has better upscaling than the A35 when I've read posters say they thought the HD A2 has better upscalling than the PS3. I think it may have been Kucoloco on here but I've read it in other forums too.
I was under the impression the A35 had better upscaling than the A2 also. Anyway, if I can score an A35 or XA2 for a good price I'll grab one. One guy in Toronto sold a used XA2 for $300 on craigslist. I'll search for A35's as well.
