No, I enjoy providing information (and links), and as you know have been 'dual-format' since last July, but UNLIKE YOU I'm not bias for just one hi-def disc format. Also, I written here several times negative reports about Sony (they are not perfect obviously), since joining the msg bd in June 2006.

Again, rather than posting many of these 'commentary' threads, I try to post related info and links, often bringing my own past long video experience as a collector to this board.

Amazon shows a new box for the PS3. The description says Spider-man 3 is still included, but the box doesn't seem to show it - maybe the limited edition has run its course?

I hope you're not planning on using the Component Output for expected HD viewing of those RESIDENT EVIL German imports. These HD-DVD versions are among a handful of releases where the distributor actually decided to enforce the 'image constraint token' for any output other than HDMI (you are safe here).

HDMI or bust!! lol. I don't mean to sound anal but what's the point of having a HD player (either format) if you are not going to have the appropriate connections to fully enjoy HD? Might as well stick with SD-DVD.

Unless I missunderstood your comment, do you mean to tell me there are some people that actually use the component cables to view HD players????

I haven't heard of any new price drops for either system. The $500 40GB isn't that old, so I wouldn't expect another price drop anytime soon. Since you already have a 360, you might as well just wait for the Blu-Ray add on that we all know is coming. Microsoft has all but confirmed that they are working on it.

wil-lite...

A refresher course about hi-def signals and cables -

HDMI - digital (also DVI)
-HD signals supported: 720p, 1080i, 1080p, (1440p <not marketed to consumers)

Component - analog
-HD signals supported: 720p, 1080i, 1080p*

*capable thru component, but no hi-def discs allow it w/HDCP - also standard DVDs cannot be upconverted thru Component (just HDMI).

Many HDTVs before 2004 may ONLY have a component input, so "HD" signals from the hi-def disc players can only be viewed in high-definition thru the Component input.

Until an owner upgrades to a current model TV display (w/HDMI or DVI), "HD" viewing is capable only thru the Component input. But some studios can opt to enforce the 'image restraint token' thru Component, with 'down-conversion' to standard 480p resolution.

This is good news for HD-DVD I suppose, but it's too late for any good news to matter. It is bad news for me though, I was hoping thre would be a a mass consumer migration over to Blu-Ray so I could get tons of HD-DVDs for as cheap as possible. It's not like we're not getting good deals though. Tomorrow I'm going to Best Buy to pick up the $50 360 add on (with the 5 free movies ), then I'm going to hit Amazon and DeepDiscountDVD's clearance sales. Hell, I may even pick up another stand alone player (or two) before the 5 free movie deal expires.
