Yeah for a long time after dvd came out you got free movies if you bought the players. They had to get people away from their vhs tapes.

aimhigh... Microsoft does not own or distribute major film content, just some minor titles they released a few years ago for playback on a PC.

I've said this many times and will so again (like some others here on this thread) - when NEW releases are NO LONGER BEING ANNOUNCED for release, then the format platform is DEAD.

As of right now, there are no major studio-announced HD-DVD titles beyond the end of May for the USA/North American market. So, unless that changes, the ONLY titles possibly available will be for any other titles still being released in overseas countries, such as Dutch, French, German HD-DVD releases.

Once all of the other areas end support for HD-DVD releases, well, then it's THE END for the format, unless some smaller entity decides to release something on HD-DVD (like one of our Msg Bd members, DjFunkmeisterG is hoping to do, with his independent film, Trapped, at a later date).

As long as new software is being released for HD DVD and both Samsung and LG both continue to produce and sell a dual format player, HD DVD will continue to grow, albeit at a more slower pace than when Toshiba was at the forefront of backing the format.

There will come a time when there is no software being released on HD DVD and no one manufactures a player capable of supporting HD DVD...then we can play the death dirge for the HD DVD format.

I will continue to support the HD DVD format as it works for me at present...I may see Blu in the future, but right now, I am comfortable in supporting HD DVD, and where need be, SD DVD

Question? Does anyone know for sure if Universal and Paramount will discontinue in May? I was under the presumption that they would continue until the end of this year?

Oh by the way, a friend of mine that works for London Drugs in Canada said that their warehouse had pretty much depleted all stock of Toshiba HD DVD players. the only ones left were that of those still in stores...

Another friend that works for Futureshop had 1026 A3 Toshiba's for all fo Canada three days ago, and now has pretty much sold out.

Too bad it doesn't mean anything.

Dylo,
I agree with you about getting HDTVs into homes in order to really get Blu going. As far as the price for stand alone players is concerned, the prices may not go up but I don't see them coming down much either. You figure that even when the format war was going on the player prices were still at $400.
