I haven't made the jump over to HD (either format) yet, so I was wondering what would be the best thing for me to do? I was considering buying all the HD-DVDs I can for now and either a stand alone player or the XBOX 360 add on, and later buy a dual format player. Should I do that or just buy everything in Blu-Ray once the prices drop a little?

Well, if you haven't started a collection yet, the only reason you should do so in HD DVD would be if you found a great deal on some movies. Also, there's still some time left to get five free movies by mail with the Toshiba HD A3 and it also comes with two movies, so for under $100 you can get seven hi def movies at less than what HD movies cost on either format, plus you would have a nice player to play SD DVDs and HD DVDs that you may come across in the future - just don't look forward to too many newly released HD DVDs is all.

Nothing wrong with getting into Blu-ray if you don't mind the price tag...the more people buying Blu-ray Discs now, the sooner they'll get cheaper so I can buy them too! At least that's my theory.

I just purchased The Bourne Identity and 300 (both HD DVD's) off this guy on Craigslist yesterday for $10 each. They were brand new and sealed. Unbelieveable deal for 2 hidef movies. The kicker is I already have 300 but this new version I have is HD DVD only, the one I have is the HD DVD/DVD Combo so I'll give my old one to someone or sell it for $10 :p

In response to the original poster, I would say wait until some standalone profile 2.0 bluray players come out at a reasonable price. In the meantime you can start buying bluray movies for cheap on Ebay or through Amazon.com sales.

Speaking of cheap Blu Ray movies, I was just in a local Newbury Comics store this morning. They have a great selection of USED HD DVD and Blu Ray movies for $12-15.00, which is not great, but not bad either. I bought Stargate for 12 bucks. Now, all I need is the player. The disk looks lonley up there on my media shelves surrounded by red covers (I file my disks alph by title). I also have a copy of Flyboys on BD, which is also surrounded by red cases.

For whatever the reason, they had twice as many used BD titles then HD DVD, some of them with multiple copies. I'll probably buy 1 or 2 a month until I get a player.

StevePro,

That's not a bad idea about buying some Blu's so when you do invest in a player that the attach price is not higher. My problem is I do own a PS3 and I still can't find movies that I like. I flipped thru 57 pages on AMAZON and only found 1 movie that I wanted to see. The other ones I did see that I would've purchased I already seen on HD On Demand.

I'm just wondering. How is $12-15 not great for used HDM when they sell for $20-30 brand new? I hope you're not expecting them to cost the same as used DVD's.

Vortex some people have mentioned they have scored hidef movies on Ebay for $7-$10. I scored 2 HD DVD's yesterday for $10 each, brand new and sealed. I have also seen on occasion $10 blurays on craigslist.

I don't think I was clear on what I was asking. I meant, do you guys think I should buy HD-DVDs now because I can get them cheap or just wait until Blu becomes affordable? The only reason why I am on the fence is because I don't own any high def movies at all.

I know Facon, but those are liquidation-like prices and do not reflect the immediate future of used HDM. Going to a store and paying $12-15 for used HDM is darn good IMO.

FRevolution, I would definitely wait until profile 2.0 machines are released in the market before buying a stand-alone one. Otherwise, if you're not a Sony hater and like versatile CE equipment, then I'd say go with the PS3. I'm not gonna get into how good it is now, but it is already profile 1.1 with the last firmware, and it will be profile 2.0 capable by the Fall.

A good alternative would be the BDP-S350 from Sony, which is also profile 2.0 and bitsreams all hi-def audio options to receivers capable of decoding them and will cost $350. It will be released the first week of June.

As long as you're ok with the fact that HD DVD going forward is a 'dead' format, with future hardware support only a possibility in the future (via dual format players), then go for it, since HD DVD is just as good as BLu-ray in terms of PQ/AQ. You could buy a spare player and feel at ease buying up movies from panic sellers for under $10 each.
