11/04/08?! If that were the d/m/y format, then that would be wonderful, because it's before the June cutoff. But WB doesn't use that format, don't they? Is the Blu-ray version showing also?

Oh yeah, it does show:

Strangely with the same release date too. Hmm... no cover art available for the Blu version it seems.

Oddly enough, WB's press site also shows a November 4, 2008 release date for the HD DVD (and the same date for the BD). However, it may simply be a matter of their not having changed it since their announcement not to release any more HD DVDs after May 31st. I'll ask their marketing director in the morning what's up with it.

Shawshank Redemption is consistently rated one of the best movies of all time and I have to agree. It's definitely one of my fav's.

Yeah, maybe they can bump it up to May 31st or something. The movie was promoted in many flyer inserts that came with the 2006 releases, so it would be a nice touch to see them fulfill it. Of course, it probably won't happen, but I can still hope.

If I had to guess, i would say that any movie solicited has already begun the process of distribtuion a long time ago and there'd be no reason not to take orders and fullfill them. The worst that could happen is that based on a dearth of advanced orders they decide to cancel the title, in which case you'd have nothing to pay.

Well I think WB is just the distributor. It's the same with BBC stuff like Planet earth. WB just distributes it.

"Shawshank" was made by Castle Rock Entertainment, which is currently a subsidiary of and distributed by Warner Bros.

Hey John J... if you can get accurate info on whether it WILL be released on HD DVD or not... also ask - if they intend NOT to release that on HD DVD... if they would do a limited release on it (and any other HD DVD movies), if they got enough "pre-orders" for them. I would CERTAINLY be willing to order directly from WHV, any HD DVD that could ONLY be gotten that way!
In fact... the HD DVD camp has ALWAYS said it is easier/cheaper to produce HD DVD's... so maybe they would be willing to do limited-run releases of titles on HD DVD, so they won't have a warehouse overstocked with 50,000 copies of each HD DVD that didn't sell. Varese Sarabande does limited-release runs of exclusive soundtracks on CD (like, "Predator" and "Die Hard" - both never released on ANY music format before). They did 3000 copies of each of those... until sold out. I got one of each of those - they are SWEET!
If there is a market for something - even a small one... they would be foolish to ignore it altogether!

Yes it is, and it should have won the Oscar over Forrest Gump that year. But that is just my opinion.

InvisibleBiker, the Oscars and I hardly ever agree with each other - and this year was no different in that regard.

I am just saying it was a great movie. probably the best Stephen King story adapted for the screen. And The Green Mile was pretty awesome also.

And I was agreeing with you, dammit!
I think Forrest Gump was a bit overrated IMO, certainly in comparison. Although I thought "The Green Mile" was a bit long and could have used some editing, I would jump on that when its released in high-def too. I've never considered Tom Hanks very convincing an actor, I think he did a really good job in this one.

I totally agree with you Hawk. He is the modern day Jimmy Stewart, a great actor. You never hear any contoversy about him.

Warner Bros.'s Vice President of Publicity and Promtion, Ronnee Sass, informs me this morning that the "Shawshank" listing for HD DVD is an error on WB's part. They will change it on their press site.

Thanks for the update John.
So I wonder if they're releasing this in Blu-ray this November 4th, or if that was a mistake too? And for $19.99? If Warner did a good job with this one and loaded it with exclusive extras, it's one of the few catalog titles I wouldn't hesitate to spend $32.99 for.

Well, this is hardly news. WB have had "Shawshank" listed on their press site for a Nov. 4 high-def release at $28.99 for quite some time. And while they apparently took down the HD DVD listing from their public Web site, they still list the HD DVD on their press site. I guess it's hard for the left hand to know what the right hand is doing.
In any case, it's Blu-ray only, $28.99, Nov. 4.

News to me and I think a lot of other people considering Warner's latest public press release about upcoming titles planned into 2009 left this movie out.
Any-hoot, it seems their site still shows the HD DVD available for preorder at $19.99:
