these are your AVERAGE CONSUMERS, who some are RENTING or TRAPPED in the sub-prime mortgage mess....

You're right Xplaytendo...and these are also the same consumers with the 'must have now' mentality that have driven the American credit card debt to record levels. By the time digital downloads of 1080P video is a viable alternative, I predict Blu Ray will already be firmly entrenched as the new disc format of choice...prices will have dropped....and people will be like, why should I download movies when I have this $100 Blu Ray with perfect picture and a 100 discs laying around

Digital downloads will never fully replace phsyical movies. Everyone would need ridiculously massive hard drives in order to have a movie collection, especially and HD movie collection. How much space do you think a 300 movie S-DVD collection would take up?

Besides.. have MP3s fully replaced CDs? Exactly.

People are also forgetting that there already is a very strong market for Blu-ray and it's growing every single day. Downloads will be a cool alternative, but a replacement? Never.

Strong market??? Compared to HD-DVD perhaps, but compared to SD-DVD? LOL (ahem, sorry). I do agree with BD fanboys that downloads will not take over physical DVD media (SD or BD) however, I still think that there is a great chance of BD loosing the overall battle, not against downloads, but against SD-DVD's.

Xplay (love the show), you stole my thing about the 700 MHz spectrum and Google!! But I strongly agree.

First, tell me, how many younger people do you see without ear/headphones? Most of them have iPods, Zunes, or many of the less-known brands. CDs might not be replaced, but they will share markets equally with downloads (50/50).

And to ALL of you who still say that digital downloads are not the answer, rethink what was said above with the digital cameras...yep, go back and read it...done?...Yes, film has been replaced by memory sticks. Now we have hundreds and hundreds of pictures...oh, and about storage??? Give me a break, ALL of us who post here know how much technology evolves, haven't we been seing terabyte drives? Come on!

My idea of a simpler digital download center would be with TiVo, since I know that many people use that service (I don't), and they like it for its ease of use. Now, bandwidth...oh, well the US does need to upgrade its internet infrastructure, but anyhow, we still have pretty cheap internet (I'm paying less than $20 for my ATT DSL service).

In the end, "Average Joe" won't buy into blu-ray because it's expensive, won't get into downloads because of the hardware and won't stop buying "hard copies" because we all love to show off our shiny metal butts, I mean, discs...

When our cable provider gives us half decent VOD HD service at acceptable bit rates for $5.00 a pop, I'll jump on it in a second. It beats wiping snow off the car and driving to the video store to rent one. As long as I can pause, rewind, etc. and the quality is similar I'm there!

Of course, this has nothing to do with me buying disks. But it does have something to do with my rental habits. The local video rental store will not be happy! LOL Err... oh wait, both the video store AND our cable provider is the same company - Rogers. Sheeeeet!

Chance of BD never overtaking DVD: maybe. You wanting that to happen so badly that you can almost taste it: definitely.

Can you be more biased towards blu-ray? I mean, with all the facts (regardless of who 'won'), you still think the way its going blu-ray stands a real chance??

Is there a reason people constantly misspell "loser?"

Is it a way cool teenage thing?

It must be. Keep reading & you'll see BLOWHARDS using the term: "DUEL" PLAYERS (hd-dvd & blu ray player as one). All their posted, hot air bravado- followed up by kindergarten spelling mentality, makes up for a very amusing read.
