I can't help but wonder if there still would be a price cut if the format war was still going on. Sony lost alot of money pushing blu-ray.(reportedly around 3 billion or more)
Now that the battle has pretty much been won they need to recover their losses somehow.
Sony losing $3 billion is an exaggeration. Yes, they have lost a lot of money by selling PS3 under priced, but almost every new console ever released is always sold at a loss initially. How much money do you think Microsoft lost since they released the Xbox 360? The PS3 actually made a profit for the first time last quarter, meaning that it only took them 5 fiscal quarters to make the PS3 profitable, while Microsoft hopes to finally break even on the Xbox 360 at the end of this fiscal year. So, it would have taken them 3 full years to do so.
Also, how many hundreds of millions of dollars do you think Toshiba has lost in the last 2 years selling its HD DVD players at such a low price? And how many hundreds of millions more it will need to sacrifice in order shut down its HD DVD manufacturing plants? God only knows.
Sony will not have to hike prices in order to recoup some of its losses because they will be getting royalties from every Blu-ray player/drive and software/movie that will be sold until the end of that format.

As I recall, the big drops were done just a few months ago, not since the beginninig. But now that Sony has no one to compete against, it's obvious that they don't care to cut prices, WE are screwed.
Oh, and regardless of the emo Peter Parker, Spiderman 3 was LAME, even with three 'bad guys'...Peter Parker dancing?!?!?

@gvortex, Microsoft has been reported to actually have been making a profit on their consoles for a while now. Granted it isn't much but it's still somewhere in the $30-$50 per console range.

Although the lower cost of blue laser diodes in particular helped lower the cost of manufacture a great deal, I believe Sony is still losing money on each PS3 sale - just not nearly as much as earlier. But in the last quarterly report, Sony's game division did return to profitability, partly because of the lessor loss for each PS3 sold, as well as continuing software, hardware, and accessory sales for the PS2 and PSP.
Oh, technically the PS3 was only introduced outside of America and Japan in March 07 - so not quite a year yet for most of the world.

I think the reason why SONY will not cut the price of the PS3 is that they don't want a situation like the one TOSHIBA created. April 1st is the release date for the Panasonic BD50K my last media player hopefully for a while.

Tony, if you were Sony would you cut the prices on PS3's right now? Consider that the price drop before Christmas resulted in a lot of sales, and the fact that the last Q was the first time the PS3 has outsold the 360 worldwide. I also think they would want to see how Blu-ray winning will affect PS3 sales for the next Q or two at least. And Sony doesn't want to further undercut the other CE companies manufacturing Blu-ray SA players at this time. It would be a bad idea IMO.

This is not surprising. I noticed the XBOX 360's got a $50 price cut up here in Canada. I'm guessing the same thing happened in the U.S.?
The Xbox 360 in the US got a $50 price cut awhile ago. I believe it was late summer. Also during the holidays it was bundled with two games.

Actually If I was running Sony i would cut the 40gb to $350 and the 80gb to $400. They need to saturate the market like Microsoft has. The price cut for the holidays didn't really help. The Playstation 3 still sold the least in America during the two most important retail months and in december it was the only console that did not sell 1 million or more units.

WOW, LMAO!!!! Another con from SONY the master of the con. No free movies no more, no price drop what a joke. I said this earlier in one of my threads, that there would be no price drop of the PS3. They sucked alot people in and now they pay you back like only SONY can. Why not a bundle with a movie and a game. During the war they offered Spidey 3 but no game. They could'nt sale their inferior stand alone players, so they coned people to buy a PS3. NOW that the war is over, they will be pushing the PS3 as a gaming system again, umm which that's what it was all along. LMAO!!!
I am glad I did not take the bate and I almost did.

Damn IB, I seriously think that you should go work for one of the upcoming presidential candidates. You'd be great at spreading propaganda about the other camp's candidate. LOL
