I'm pretty amazed at this. Toshiba threw in the towel and Dreamworks is waiting for word from them about discontinuing HD DVD's? That's pretty loyal even if they were paid off. Still i would like to see Dreamworks release some more titles on HD DVD like Shrek 1 and 2 amongst others before they go bluray. Even after they start releasing on bluray I hope they release a few more HD DVD's still.

Not quite. The agreement covers DreamWorks ANIMATION, which is actually an independent company. DreamWorks ANIMATION was spun off from DreamWorks. Subsequently, Paramount bought DreamWorks and only distributes movies produced by DreamWorks ANIMATION.

I was kind of surprised, too. With the talk yesterday Paramount and Toshiba were figuring out the inventive payment, I figured DreamWorks had been rolled up in that conversation. There's something else going on here aside from what's reported. It doesn't quite make sense to me.

Isn't Dreamworks Animation still part owned by SKG? Because when SKG sold Dreamworks in 2005 I thought I remember the media saying that SKG were going to keep the Animation section of the company.

I don't care about Bee Movie as much as I do about There Will Be Blood. I wanted that on HD-DVD. Don't care for Sweeney Todd, so it is not a must own.

The HD-DVD titles I really want are:

There Will Be Blood
I am Legend
Twister
Shawshank Redemption
Fletch

After that I will start buying more Blu stuff, but right now I am concetrating on having the be all end all HD-DVD collection.

This article says Sweeny Todd and I am Legend will still be released

Other titles heading to HD-DVD despite its demise include Sweeny Todd, I Am Legend, Into The Wild and Bee Movie. So there's still a reason to keep that Toshiba deck plugged in to the TV.

Well, we can all take comfort in the fact that ALL of those will EVENTUALLY go Blu Ray... It won't be surprising if they're just in time for the Holidays. Who knows what's stated on that contract.

And I was told last night, that I was being obsessive with my loyalty towards HD DVD. What about Warner Brothers, they are still fullfilling their obligation to HD DVD up until June 1, 2008. I still beleive, that we will see HD DVD's until the end of this year. I am not being overly obsessive, that is just my thought process.

I contacted Toshiba by email and asked them to reverse their decision on creating players due to Dreamworks' obligation I also preordered Bee Movie

They're probably shaking their heads going "you poor schlub, its over... let it go."

However, I would be very supportive of them producing players until Dreamworks contract expires.

Is the Dreamworks HD DVD exclusivity hinged on a decision of just Toshiba, or the Entire HD DVD Promotional Organization???

http://www.thelookandsoundofperfect.com/

If the rumor of Toshiba holding out on payments means anything, I would think it would only want to make them to go Blu faster because HD DVD had scammed them.

The reference to hoping to see things worked out by the end of the year sounds like they are still obligated to remain HD DVD exclusive until 2009.

I am not $ony's biggest fan, but to at least let them go Format Neutral as Paramount and Universal has already announced would probably make some sense.

If not, a contract is a contract, especially if the lawyers forgot to provide an escape clause.

If so, lets hope to see some announcements of a nice slate of Dreamworks HD DVD releases throughout 2008.

The Blu-Fanboys will be in total meltdown if they can't get Transformers in the Blu case until next year.

True, they are separate companies...
...But Dreamworks SKG Pictures remains the exclusive distributor of Dreamworks Animation releases.

Dreamworks Animation is at the mercy of whatever format that Dreamworks Pictures wants to release their films in.

It's all about the distribution channel, the whole reason that you can get foreign release titles in formats different than you can get them domestically.

DreamWorks Animation is not at the mercy of DreamWorks Pictures. DreamWorks Pictures is WHOLLY OWNED by Paramount, a unit of Viacom Corporation. DreamWorks Animation's distribution deal is with Paramount/Viacom, NOT DreamWorks Pictures.
