Man I am getting tired of re makes on other hollywood junk. What do you think are the most original films of the last ten years? I think EVERY Disney Pixar movie and The Matrix. Those are the ones that came to mind!

Even when it is based on a book, Million Dollar Baby seems very original. I heard Hairspray is very 'new' too. Brokeback Mountain is a love story but with a a fresh approach. Little Miss Sunshine is a family epic that is very enjoyable (and 40 year old Virgin is just fantastic). Pan's Labyrinth, if you like 'adult fairy tales'. Children of Men. But of course, those are mostly the ones I've seen, I'm pretty sure there is some indy stuff that's also good.
I also agree with Pixar (Incredibles, Cars and Ratatouille being the most original), and Matrix, just the first movie.
Of course, that's IMO.

I used to think The Matrix was an original idea until I saw I Robot which it has the same premise: Man creates artificial intelligence and eventually such A.I. wants to take over humanity. I know that I Robot came later BUT, I Robot was based on the series of 9 books by Isaac Asimov which date back to 1950.
The ninth book: The Evitable Conflict, is the book that tells that the machines try to control humanity in order to protect it. In the Matrix even though the machines are trying to take over humanity for energy, the basic concept is the same: Intelligent robots attempting to enslave humanity. Also there was controversy on the Matrix being too similar to a cyberpunk novel called Neuromancer (1984). So I hardly consider the Matrix to be "an original film". I think the Matrix is more of a "further developed and refined" idea. Still a great film.
Going back to topic, how about Minority Report?

As confusing as it was, The Fountain. I had to watch it a few times. Visually it's a VERY good movie. It's just hard to follow sometimes.

Absolutely stunning film...
> CITY OF GOD
...received positive acclaim from major publications in the United States, gathering 92% of favourable reviews on Rotten Tomatoes. Empire chose it as the best film of 2003 and Time chose it as one of the 100 greatest movies of all time, while E! ranked it the 3rd "movie to see before you die" and it is ranked 16th best film of all time on IMDB Top 250. However there has been some criticism from the left. It has been argued that the film exploits certain middle class stereotypes about the poor.

I wouldn't exactly call the Matrix original since it is just an updated REMAKE of Alice in Wonderland, and changing the lead to a male actor... a shitty one at that.

MEMENTO is the best with FIGHT CLUB being a close second. I'd also throw EQUILIBRIUM into that mix.

As long as we're just saying original, and good is not a requirement. He is the most pretentious filmmaker on the planet. His "look how quirky I can be!" movies wore out their welcome after Rushmore.
I'd say, if you want originality with quality, look to Guillermo Del Toro, Darren Aronofsky, and, as much as I hate to toot his horn, because he does it so much himself, Quentin Tarantino. Whether you like it or not, just look at the impact he has had on dialogue in film. I happen to like it.
