Since the 5 free HD DVD promotion has now ended, they should be able to price the A3 at $49 as a cheap HDMI up-converter solution.

It would be nice to hear Toshiba release the number of HD DVD players they actually manufactured, not just the ones that have been sold.

I wonder how many of these things are currently sitting in warehouses throughout the country, and still there is the question if Toshiba has even ceased production yet, because in their press statement they said they were going to wind down production and be out of the HD DVD business by March 31.

That looks like there is still 1 month now until the end, how many more are out there to continue to be sold??

Watch them completely sell out, then revitalize the format with a studio purchase... Now that would be funny.

I somehow doubt that Toshiba will want to manufacture more $300 players to sell for $69. But that's just a guess on my part.

I can only base things on their 'official' press release that stated that they would be reducing quantities distributed to retail, and would finish up by the end of March '08.

If production ends by March 31st, they might still have some new inventory going into distribution.

Is still want to see the amount of players manufactured compared to the amount sold.

Are there 5000 units yet unsold, or 50,000 units yet unsold???

Ok, what I don't understand that the studios would drop the format now. Why not wait until the end of the year. Think about it, if Toshiba players completely sell out, they have already lost but, now there is over 2 million players in peoples homes. The studios are missing out on that opportunity to sell movies, reguardless that the format is dead. Over 2 million players out there, and no content? Maybe I'm crazy but, Toshiba has almost a 100% sell rate at 70% loss, but no content for those players....

Maybe it's because the Toshiba incentive well has dried up.

We got players, some movies...why stop releasing then?

Releasing in two formats would mean more money, since many of us already have a HD DVD player and won't spend top dollars for the blu anytime soon...and I thought studios were actually greedy...

Wow Skyhawk, I guess that means that the consumer hasn't picked Bleu Ray as their format of choice, it's all based upon what manufacturers can pay off the most money to the majority of studios that determined the 'Consumers Choice'.

Now that there is only Bleu out there, the consumer will be the ones that will be saddled with paying back $ony and the BDA for all the money they paid out to force the studios to go Bleu Ray, in higher BD player and disc prices.

Then add in the promised cheaper player prices being the profile 1.0 units that they can't get rid of, and the seeming inability of any manufacturer to be able to hold a BD player price below $399.

The money for that BDA Half-Billion Dollar payment to Warner has to be reclaimed from somewhere, right???

The only thing that Bleu has done is either sealed it's own fate, or promises the consumer little more than paying more than double for a price inflated incomplete format, that is no better than a completed standard that was actually affordable.

To the HD-DVD only crowd... buy a Blu-ray player = problem solved

Seriously... MANY and/or MOST people will not adopt into a hi-def disc format unless and until there is only ONE format on the market, and supported by all the studios.

To date, Blu-ray has been the primary leader in hi-def disc media, both in software sales, studio support, and manufacture/infrastructure support (the industry).

HD-DVD was a distant second, leading only in actual stand-alone player sales (but Blu-ray gaining here), and perhaps the "attach rate" (disc sales per owner) according to some reports. But it wasn't enough of a market for the studios to keep supporting HD-DVD, especially since the 2-format 'division' (war) was the biggest reason for the slow adoption overall, compared to SD-DVD.

Now with the one single major format to support, hopefully the adoption into hi-def discs will accelerate, and become a success, which is what the studios are "banking" on.

And to keep supporting HD-DVD requires that the studios pay additional fees to encode the content again (after Blu-ray) - and while a few studios at times were doing this (Paramount and Warner), the majority have and continue to support the better-selling format (Blu-ray), so after May there probably won't be any more HD-DVD titles released in North America, although some other countries may still see a release (and can be imported back here).

Since I have not paid much attention lately. Has the BR numbers grown much or exponetially since HD DVD's death? Or are they about the same. Ever since HD DVD's death, I'm under the perception that Blu hasn't grown that much. I could be totally way off, but Bilby isn't around to post numbers anymore. LOL

I am proud to say that I have obtained 23 BR movies!!! I love you Blockbuster! LOL
