Why Blu-ray will be the next DVD

Actually it's more like, Why Blu-Ray will NEVER be the next DVD....

DVD is the trademarked name for a disc format sanctioned by the DVD Forum.

The DVD Forum holds both the DVD name and the DVD logo as their own trademark.

If we can all remember, the BDA decided to break away from the DVD Forum and develop it's own HDM technology that they named Blu-Ray Disc.

A Blu-Ray Disc is a Blu-Ray Disc.

A DVD is a DVD.

A HD DVD is a HD DVD.

Let's try to keep those trademarked facts clear and separate

Unless the DVD Forum decides to license the 'DVD' name to the BDA, there is no such thing as a Blu Ray DVD.

The BDA can't advertise Blu Ray as the next generation DVD, because it isn't DVD at all.

Only HD DVD earned the distinction to be called a DVD and to be the next generation of DVD.

Today, the next generation of DVD is HD DVD, and the generation of DVD beyond HD DVD will be the one sanctioned by the DVD Forum, and allowed to use the DVD name.

Toshiba does not, nor did it ever, own the HD DVD trademark, it is a trademark shared between the HD DVD Promotional Organization, AND the DVD Forum.

It is commonly misconstrued here, and even in many media releases that Blu-Ray Disc won the next generation DVD format war.

Unfortunately, Sony and the BDA can't identify the Blu-Ray name as a DVD, and there are no DVD's that can call themselves Blu Ray.

The BDA can't use the DVD Forum coattails to fool people that it has anything to do with DVD.

It is a completely different format, and isn't even standardized yet, so I figure that Sony will let the BDA declare Blu-Ray Disc as the successor to BETA, since it still is in BETA, and Sony itself actually owns the BETAmax trademark.

Fortunately HD DVD is a finalized standard, so there is no HD DVD 1.1, 2.0, 2.1, ect...

In the end, why would a real DVD want to be called something Blu anyway????

Last time I checked: DVD players DID NOT NEED ADDITIONAL $$$ for a NEW TV. Buy a Blu-ray (or HD-DVD), and YOU NEED TO SPEND AT LEAST $1400, for a good 1080p HDTV, to take advantage of the 1080p "MARKETING HYPE" featured on both hi-def players.

No. Blu-ray is not gaining momentum against DVD. This hyped up technology is especially hampered by the economy. NO ONE CARES.

You may not care, but the over 25% of American households that already have HDTV's most likely will. That number is growing exponentially every year. And since DVD's look crappy on large screen HDTV's, people will seek out superior alternatives. That alternative is Blu-ray. It may not be your alternative, but it will be millions of other people's.

Skydwarf, Skydwarf, Skydwarf.... your slipping old man, you now need to put words in my mouth to win your little debate. I NEVER refered to the faroudja scaler as the cheap internal chip found in LG plasmas circa 2001, or now found in cheapish Sony ES range receivers, i was refering to external units that would normaly retail for 2-3k at least. Once again you jumped in and made a fool of yourself. I also never claimed any form of Faroudja's technology to be found in a kuro display. I have given up drugs but based of your reply to my last post im keen to sample what your smoking111

Also to all you ignorant people in regards to HDCP there is a major difference between resize and re-scale. every panel can re-size data from any source, but to re-scale (or simply put interpolate the data) you need to decrypt HDCP. So do your homework or know your stuff before you post regurgitated jargon. that is why most native 1080p panels look better using monster component cables when the source is only 576, or 1080i as the panels video SCALER!!! (not re-sizer) is put into place not bypassed when HDMI is used.

And 25% of the households don't even understand the end of Analog TV will occur on February 17 , 2009.

And the 25% of households that have an HDTV probably bought one because they either thought they have to to continue watching TV when it goes Digital, or they wanted to watch live sports in HD.

Less than 5% of that 25% that own HDTV's actually give 2 cents about Red or Blu, they are still amazed how well their old DVD's (non-upconverted) look on their new big screen TV, and how many HD channels they can get on Satellite or Cable TV.

480i/p, 720p, 1080i/p

What do those numbers mean to most people anyway???

Numbers they may not care about, but once they experience true high-def images first hand, then they'll realize that they've been cheating themselves by believing that upconverted DVD's were good enough all this time.

Let me put this as bluntly as I can, Hd-Dvd your pool is closed. Now then let me first say I'm sick of these hd-dud fans getting so high and mighty just because for one little moment they shine. Ohh we had the number one seller this week considering we haven't had a top seller in months and we lost the format war this great news, maybe the studios will start making HD's again.

Please by the end of May you will not see any Hd-dud players or discs except online since most stores will either dump them of studios will stop releasing discs. You guys might American gangster and Beowolf now but remember this, these are most likely the last good HD's you'll get and not only that but we as in blu-ray will get not only them but all of the Hd-Dud library.

So please stop riding your high horse and deal with the fact you only bought an Hd-Dud player because your too cheap to by a Blu-Ray. Wars over we win and the expected loser lost.

Another IDIOTIC ASSUMPTION from a fanboy. The reason not everyone is on the hi-def bandwagon, IS BECAUSE THEY CANNOT AFFORD IT. They also realize that THEY DO NOT NEED IT. 2009 will come and gone, and ANALOG TV's will still be functional, due to a $60 digital-to-analog converter.

No one is BEING CHEATED by the notion of KEEPING the Average Consumer's budget, FOR MORE IMPORTANT SPENDING, instead of wasting it on a HI-DEF HARDWARE SETUP. The MAJORITY don't have it because they can't afford it RECESSION is HERE & NOW, & they know better than to BELIEVE FANBOY RANTS LIKE YOURS, that they are "cheating themselves" with plain ol' dvd players, or upconverters. The MAJORITY don't have it since they REALIZE the need to SPEND A HDTV SET, as well, in order to play that hidef box. NEITHER ONE IS NECESSARY, and so are your comments regarding the upconverters 'cheating' owners of their visual experience.
